Paperback. English. MacMillan. 2011 In good condition. Signed by Jansen. At a time when newspapers are full of the woes of the South African education system and stories of teachers who let the children in their classes down, this book shows that this is not the whole picture; it is a celebration of heroic teachers who have struggled against great odds to give their students a chance of success. Great South African Teachers celebrates the massive contribution of remarkable teachers, both past and present, working in South African schools. The stories, sent in by over 100 South Africans in response to advertisements placed in the Sunday Times, pay tribute to teachers who have changed lives through their passion for their subject, their dedication to the dignity of the teaching profession, and above all their determination to see the children in their classes succeed. The contributions reflect the full range of South African schools -- rich schools, poor schools, white schools under apartheid, black schools under apartheid, urban schools and rural schools, schools today and schools in the past. And the contributors come from varied backgrounds: privileged children exposed to the realities of apartheid South Africa through their teachers, poor children motivated to work to break the bonds of poverty, angry children and shy children, bright children stretched to achieve their full potential and others taught the value of hard work in the pursuit of success. Jonathan Jansen, assisted by Lihlumelo Toyana and Nangamso Koza, introduces the collection of contributions with a thought-provoking commentary on the lessons to be learnt from the tributes. Jansen identifies seven types of inspiring teacher, showing how each type works differently to bring out the best in the children in their charge. Great South African Teachers thanks our inspiring teachers and hopes to motivate the next generation of teachers to dedicate themselves to changing lives, to changing the future. All the royalties from this book go towards pre-service teacher bursaries at universities in South Africa. The first recipient of a bursary funded by the royalties from this book is currently studying for his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of the Free State. He will be the first graduate in his family.

There was outcomes-based education (also known as Curriculum 2005), then the Revised National Curriculum Statements, followed by the National Curriculum Statements (NCS). In January 2012, Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) were introduced to replace the NCS. All these changes have been confusing to the average teacher, with the assessment of the young learner being particularly challenging. Assessment in the Foundation Phase guides teachers and student teachers towards understanding assessment as a means for ensuring that learners have attained the necessary outcomes, and doing it effectively for optimal teaching and learning. Assessment in the Foundation Phase sets out recommended techniques and tools to assess learners' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, and applies these to all subjects prescribed by CAPS. Its goal is to inspire teachers to prepare learners to meet the challenges of future learning through quality assessment and in so doing, support learners in gaining the capacity for lifelong learning. A chapter on e-assessment introduces a useful perspective on this burgeoning field. Assessment in the Foundation Phase is aimed at teachers and student teachers. Reda Davin was a senior lecturer and programme manager in BEd (ECD), PGCE (ECD) and Foundation Phase progammes for 31 years. She holds a DEd degree and MDiac in play therapy and is the Head of Department: Foundation Phase Teacher Training at AROS in Pretoria. She is the editor and co-author of four books on early childhood teaching. Mariana Naude is a lecturer in mathematics for undergraduate student teachers (Foundation Phase) at Aros in Pretoria She is the co-editor of various text books published by Van Schaik Publishers, including Teaching Foundation Phase mathematics: a guide for South African students and teachers and Teaching life skills in the Foundation Phase. "Some people scream or bang tables when they express feelings of anger. Some people cry when they're extremely happy and show us tears of joy. I express my feelings with laughter, tears, anger and silence. I owe a lot to my students who asked me to write about my experiences while I was growing growing up in South Africa. In America, I sang and talked about my motherland so much that my students crowned me 'LADY AFRICA'. I've spoken in different universities, cultural events, Black history month events, United Nations and in public libraries about African issues. I think it is high time for me to share my experiences with the world through my autobiography. To all my friends, teachers, students, fans and relatives, I would also like to thank you for teaching me about the reality of life. I would also like to thank my mother Mrs. Royal Mbele, for teaching me that I can achieve anything in life if I have the determination. My father, who passed away in 1988 taught me to believe in God and I thank him for that"-- Cosbie Mbele_ Title: Lady Africa in America Author: Cosbie Mbele Publisher: Vilvia Publishers & Booksellers Paperback, 119 pages ISBN: 9781868670260

This book celebrates the endurance of the Native American Church, which now has some 80 chapters throughout the country. Prayer meetings, the sacramental use of peyote, and the significance of various practices and objects are described. Eloquent testimony of Church members from different tribes demonstrates that peyote is not used to obtain "visions" but to heal the body and spirit and to teach righteousness. "Two very important books have appeared in 1996: 'Reuben Snake: Your Humble Serpent' and 'One Nation Under God: The Triumph of the Native America Church.' I say they're important because they are designed for the U.S. Government and the American people as an audience. The books are not teaching Indigenous people about peyote; they're documents to voice the concerns of indigenous Nations, to protect those of us who participate in the spirituality of peyote -- as members of the Native American Church or as individuals". (The Native American Press, Ojibwe News)" "One Nation Under God is an essential and informative contribution to Native American studies reading lists". (The Midwest Book Review)" Reuben Snake's personal testimony on behalf of the sacred peyote is seconded and supported by the chapter 'Voices of the Native American Church, ' which presents a persuasive collection of short, heartfelt testimonials... about the life-affirming teachings of love and respect that are at the heart of the peyote way". NOTES FROM NO MAN'S LAND: AMERICAN ESSAYS begins with a series of lynchings and ends with a series of apologies. Eula Biss explores race in America and her response to the topic is informed by the experiences chronicled in these essays - teaching in a Harlem school on the morning of 9/11, reporting from an African American newspaper in San Diego, watching the aftermath of hurricane Katrina from a college town in Iowa, and settling in Chicago's most diverse neighbourhood. As Biss moves across the country from New York to California to the Midwest, her essays move across from biblical Babylon to the freedmen's schools of Reconstruction to a Jim Crow mining town to post-war white flight. She brings an eclectic education to the page, drawing variously on the Eagles, Laura Ingalls Wilder, James Baldwin, Alexander Graham Bell, Joan Didion, religious pamphlets, and reality television. These spare, sometimes lyric essays explore the legacy of race in America, artfully revealing in intimate detail how families, schools, and neighbourhood participate in preserving racial privilege.Faced with a disturbing past and unsettling present, Biss still remains hopeful about the possibilites of American diversity, 'not the sun-shininess of it, or the quote-making politics of it, but the real complexity of it. Why dont white people understand that Converse tekkies are not just cool but a political statement to people of colour? Why is it that South Africans of colour dont really write what we like? Whats the deal with people pretending to be woke? Is Islam really as anti-feminist as is claimed? What does it feel like to be a brown woman in a white media corporation? And what life lessons can we learn from Bollywood movies?   In Sorry, Not Sorry, Haji Mohamed Dawjee explores the often maddening experience of moving through post-Apartheid South Africa as a woman of colour. In characteristically candid style, Dawjee pulls no punches when examining the social landscape: from arguing why shed rather deal with an open racist than some liberal white people, to drawing on her own experience to convince readers that joining a cult is never a good idea.   In the provocative voice that has made Dawjee one of our countrys most talked-about columnists, she offers observations laced throughout with an acerbic wit. Sorry, Not Sorry  will make readers laugh, wince, nod, introspect and argue. Opting out of the favoured family profession of dentistry, Mohamed Dawjee graduated with a Bachelor in Music from the University of Pretoria before teaching music and English second language at the American International School for several years. Deciding that the world of education was far too sensible for her, she turned to the more chaotic universe of the media. Mohamed Dawjee completed a postgraduate degree in journalism at Stellenbosch University and after graduating rapidly established herself as a digital media specialist. She became Africas first social media editor in a newsroom at the Mail & Guardian, where she went on to work as deputy digital editor and a disruptor of the peace through a weekly column. A stint as the program manager for Impact Africa a grant-disbursing fund for African digital journalists followed. In 2017 Mohamed Dawjee was selected as a fellow for the Deutsche Welle Insitute. Mohamed Dawjee now pursues her own writing full-time. She infuriates readers of EWN,   Women 24   and the Sunday Times   (to the same degree, she hopes) with weekly and bi-monthly columns, and contributes freelance journalism and opinion to a range of other publications.
