ROMEO & JULIET, A DARK COMEDY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Romeo & Juliet: 3 Days of Total Chaos is an adaption of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet but with a thoroughly modern twist.  The humour that flows throughout the show is dark and the cast delivers the one-liners with flair, and swagger. As the name suggests, Romeo & Juliet: 3 Days of Total Chaos, is fast paced and it should be noted that the production is aimed at young adults as it touches on issues that plague them. “The show plays a lot on the lack of clear communication in a technologically driven world,” says Marlene Nash-McKay, writer and director. An acoustic ensemble consisting of two acoustic guitars and a percussionist beautifully handles the musical score of the show and the vocal performances are stellar. “The music is modern, mostly from independent labels, and embroiders on the story line.” Romeo & Juliet, recently opened at the Aula Theatre at the University of Pretoria to some rave reviews and drew a crowd of people who had never before attended a theatre production. “Our aim is to get people interested and excited about theatre. And that is what we achieved with our first show and what we will continue to strive to achieve.”
