The Rhodesian Bush War Diary of John Coey, KIA 19 July 1975 It is Saturday afternoon, 19 July 1975, next to a dry riverbed in Rhodesias north-eastern operational area, in a war against communist-backed guerrillas. A Rhodesian combat medic receives an order to descend into the riverbed to attend to two critically wounded troopers, their figures seemingly lifeless on the sand. The whereabouts of the insurgents is not known. As the medic, displaying a red cross, moves in, shots ring out and he sustains a fatal head wound. That medic is 24-year-old American John Alan Coey.  Driven by his Christian faith and an ardent belief in the threat of global communist hegemony, Coey had come to Rhodesia to fulfil an overriding passion to help the beleaguered southern African country in its fight against what he perceived to be a communist bid to secure the sub-continent. John was a very complex individual who, right until his death, was in a permanent state of internal conflict as to his mission in life: he wishes he had a wife; he tells young American girls that they must produce strong sons who will fight the good fight; he is disillusioned by his failures; he admits he is a weak leader, virtually offering an apology for his own shortcomings; he vacillates endlessly; he admits to being unable to identify the path he needs to take to achieve his mission.  But, finally, as a combat medica pioneer in this concepthe finds his much sought-after destiny. This book tells the story of how White Rhodesians, three-quarters of whom were ill-prepared for revolutionary change, reacted to the "terrorist" war and the onset of black rule in the 1970s. It shows how internal divisions--both old and new--undermined the supposed unity of White Rhodesia, how most Rhodesians begrudgingly accepted the inevitability of black majority rule without adjusting to its implications, and how the self-appointed defenders of Western civilization sometimes adopted uncivilized methods of protecting the "Rhodesian way of life." This is a lively and accessible account, based on careful archival research and numerous personal interviews. It sets out to tell the story from the inside and to incorporate the diverse dimensions of the Rhodesian experience. The authors suggest that the Rhodesians were more differentiated than has often been assumed and that perhaps their greatest fault was an almost infinite capacity for self-delusion. Alan Taffy Brice, an indomitable former member of Britains elite 22-SAS Regiment, led a Rhodesian Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) secret assassination team in hostile Zambia comprising himself, Hugh Chuck Hind (also of 22-SAS) and Ian and Priscilla Sutherland, whose Zambian farm was used as their rear base. Their orders were to create divisions between the two Rhodesian dissident organisations, Joshua Nkomos ZAPU/ZIPRA (backed by Soviet Russia) and Robert Mugabes ZANU/ZANLA (backed by Red China), both rear-based in Lusaka. This true story tells how for six years they led both dissident parties by their noses in a bewildering dance of death and destruction, successfully leading each to believe the other was responsible for their woes.  They blew up, machine gunned and rocketed ZIPRAs Lusaka HQ four times and ZANLAs Lusaka HQ twice. To stir Zambias disenchantment with hosting the dissidents they bombed both the Central Post Office and the Times of Zambias and blasted an imperial stone lion off its plinth at the High Court leaving obvious clues behind them. When President Nyerere of Tanzania openly criticised Joshua Nkomo, they bombed his Lusaka Embassy in retaliation. In March 1975 they eliminated ZANUs Chairman, Herbert Chitepo with a car bomb. Certain his death was caused by internal divisions, President Kaunda arrested its top leaders and kicked the organisation out of Zambia this halted the war in Rhodesia for more than a year. In 1976 Brice killed ZAPUs number two man, Jason Moyo, with a parcel bomb. Brice survived the war and died recently allowing his own name and the real names of active participants and much else to be revealed for the first time. Chuck Hind was killed while on an operation and Ian Sutherland was captured by Zambian security forces. He spent five years in a hell hole that was a Zambian prison as a result.
