HEMATITE TUMBLED IN SOUTH AFRICA
Nearly everything about this stone is a riddle. First, the fact that they are magnetic amongst all the hundreds of other minerals and crystals that are non-magnetic, indicates the hematite possesses some pretty amazing properties. Second, this is an iron-based stone, and while there is no doubt a huge number of crystals and semi precious stones have iron atoms within their structure, iron is the dominant material in this tumbled hematite. Third, this is one of the only stones in the world that appears metallic when polished, and yet it can present itself in a variety of different lusters. It can have a red or brown color with an earthy luster; a black color with a sub-metallic luster; or a silver color with a metallic luster. Finally, its very name is a mystery. The name comes from the Greek word for blood. Thus, these stones are often called bloodstones, which is quite perplexing Until you open the stone to find that it is a blood red color inside! Clearly this stone is special and should be part of any collection, whether youre a beginner rock hound or a serious gemologist. This is a great piece to carry in your pocket or purse or even have in the car. Another way to enjoy this stone is to place it on a central display in your home, where it can constantly amaze you!
