COSMOS SENSATION PINK - COSMOS BIPINNATUS If you're a gardener who thinks annuals aren't worth the effort because they're relatively short-lived, here's a flower that's out of this world. Derived from the Greek word meaning "beautiful," cosmos are as dainty as they are durable and are also one of the easiest plants to grow from seed. Plant direct or in seedling trays (see our Plastic Seedling Trays). Cosmos are adaptable to almost any kind of soil, but they do need moisture to germinate. In dry, hot climates, place a shade cloth over the bed until the seedlings begin to sprout. This happens in roughly five to 10 days after planting. Cosmos bloom continuously until the first frost. With its distinguished forms and vibrant colors, it's no wonder why so many gardeners are over the moon for these flowers in their landscaping, even those with small yards. Cosmos Pink will grow to about 60 cm and they're perfect as part of your landscaping or container gardening. To keep your cosmos in bloom, keep them trimmed. Take a branch with many finished flowers, go a third of the way down the plant and cut. Pruning is an easy way to prompt new growth and tidy up the plant. Afterward, fertilize, water and await a whole new crop. As generous re-seeders, you can either save the seed for next year's garden (remove the dried flower heads to get the seeds) or let nature scatter the seeds for you. Clarkia speciosa, sometimes known as redspot clarkia. Clarkia speciosa blooms late spring - early summer. Clarkia speciosa is a   perennial.  Clarkia is a plant that is named after William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, because it was discovered growing in the western U.S. by members of the expedition. Features: The clarkia's flowers can be single or double and measure from 50 TO 100MM across, and the colors can range from deep rose to lilac, light pink to white. Clarkia can grow to a height of about 60cmt and a width of about 20cm. Environment: Clarkias need sandy soil and either full sun (6 hours of sunshine a day) or partial shade (4 to 6 hours of shade a day). They are native to the forests of the Northwest and do better in cool rather than hot areas. Planting: Clarkia seeds can be sown directly in the garden in early spring. When the seeds sprout, thin them out to one every 15 to 20cm. Flowers will appear in about 3 months. Care: Water enough to keep the soil moist, but not soggy until the flowers appear--then cut back on watering. When the plants are15cm  in height, pinch back the tops. This will make them branch out. Dombeya is a flowering plant genus of around 250 species. Traditionally included in the family Sterculiaceae, it is included in the expanded Malvaceae in the APG and most subsequent systematics. These plants are known by a number of vernacular names which sometimes, misleadingly, allude to the superficial similarity of flowering Dombeya to pears or hydrangeas, which are unrelated. They grow chiefly throughout Africa and Madagascar. The generic name Dombeya is in honour of Joseph Dombey, a French botanist and traveller in Peru and Chile (1742-1793).           Dombeya cacuminum is a beautiful evergreen tree from Madagascar. It is a narrow upright tree which will grow 4 to 15 meters tall. It has large beautiful maple-like leaves and in spring the 30cm wide clusters of brilliant pink to coral red flowers hang at the branch tips. Unlike other Dombeya species in cultivation, the flowers drop to the ground prior to drying, making for a floral display on the ground and a much more attractive tree in and out of bloom.
