It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days As a result of widespread mistreatment and overt discrimination, women in the developing world often lack autonomy. Towards Gender Equity in Development brings together leading scholars working on gender issues to explore key sources of female empowerment and discuss the current challenges and opportunities for the future. Exploring three key domains, this book adopts a clear multi-disciplinary approach to present different perspectives from gender-focused economics and social research. It covers marriage and women's relative bargaining position within the household; the options available to women outside of marriage and in the context of their community; and overarching discriminatory laws and cultural norms. It engages with questions of how marriage, divorce, and remarriage practices have evolved and with what effects for women; how female empowerment can benefit from improving options and economic and collective action opportunities; and how the government can act as a lawmaker to contribute to modifying norms and practices that disadvantage women. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days This fascinating volume examines the recent increase in subnational environmental policy agreements between different countries, with a particular focus on Germany and the US. Holley Ralston explores why international environmental partnerships are forming at the state level and the factors that both aid and inhibit their long-term success. The book begins with an in-depth analysis of the theoretical and historical frameworks of transnational partnerships, before transitioning into a discussion of specific environmental agreements between US and German states. The following partnerships are covered in detail: California and Bavaria (1995 and 2000), Wisconsin and Bavaria (1998), Maryland and Schleswig-Holstein (2002) and California and North Rhine-Westphalia (2004). Taken together, these examples provide important insights into the ways in which multi-level governance structures allow subnational actors to shape policy developments around global environmental issues. This timely study - the first of its kind on this topic - will appeal to both academic researchers and policymakers with an interest in global environmental governance, environmental policymaking, comparative governance and the roles of individuals versus institutions. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management. As the bearers and beneficiaries of rural development initiatives, smallholder farmers, including those keeping livestock, loom large in this arena. Likewise, on international development agendas steered by bodies such as the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), smallholders are prioritized as the engines of national economies. This book, based on a pilot study of two livestock keeping communities along the Mpumalanga-Limpopo border, explores smallholder households in order to paint a picture of the challenges faced by smallholder livestock farmers, the practices and knowledge of primary animal healthcare (PAHC) among these farmers, relationships between the state and the smallholders, gendered issues, and the relationship between poor socioeconomic conditions and the keeping of livestock. This book opens up a variety of research and policy questions that encourage further exploration and study. By contrast, studies directly focused upon public and professional attitudes toward stuttering began in the 1970s. Recent work has taken this research to new levels, including the development of standard attitude measures; ad-dressing the widely reported phenomena of teasing, bullying, and discrimination against people who stutter; and attempting to change public opinion toward stuttering to more accepting and sensitive levels. Stuttering Meets Stereotype, Stigma, and Discrimination: An Overview of Attitude Research is the only reference work to date devoted entirely to the topic of stuttering attitudes. It features comprehensive review chapters by St. Louis, Boyle and Blood, Gabel, Langevin, and Abdalla; an annotated bibliography by Hughes; and experimental studies by other seasoned and new researchers. The book leads the reader through a maze of research efforts, emerging with a clear understanding of the important issues involved and ideas of where to go next. Importantly, the evidence base for stuttering attitude research extends beyond research in this fluency disorder to such areas as mental illness, obesity, and race. Thus, although of interest primarily to those who work, interact, or oth-erwise deal with stuttering, the book has potential for increasing under-standing, ameliorating negative attitudes, and informing research on any of a host of other stigmatized conditions. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In Asia, we are witnessing an era where the pendulum of power seems to be swaying towards the East with the rising strength of China and India and Singapore is at the 'crossroads' between these populous nations. Although Singapore may appear to be the most westernized country in Asia, she is nevertheless a multi-cultural Asian society. Having the most open economy in the world, Singapore is plugged into the global marketplace of education and learning. The development of human capital is used as a strategic economic driver to internationalize and transform education for sustainable competitive advantage. Singapore's education system, regarded as one of the consistently best performing in the world, offers a unique opportunity to explore issues where eastern and western culture, values, beliefs, learning and knowledge systems converge, clash, and at times diverge. This book is meant to extend our knowledge on the role of `learning', often overlooked and taken for granted as the air that we breathe but which constantly transforms our lives and reshapes societies. It is the first book that deals with the dichotomy of `east' and `west' going beyond the traditional learning and education framework to other areas such as economic, socio-cultural, political, and technological dimensions that impact Singapore. It puts together key topical issues and explores the underbelly of how a small 'resourceless' independent city-state like Singapore stays ahead of the learning curve, even while facing increasingly intense global competition where the discovery and emergence of new systems for empowerment and independence and the resulting creation of new knowledge and modes of communication are challenging traditional boundaries between the virtual and real world. Paperback. English. Human Sciences Research Council. 2006. 364pp. In good condition. Coping with immigration and urbanisation in a rapidly globalising environment is one of the policy issues facing many governments, yet the complexity of migration makes it difficult for planners to understand its causes and plan for its consequences. In this wide-ranging work, prominent migration scholars provide insight into the current dynamics and determinants of both immigration and migration in South and southern Africa, and reflect on how the lifting of apartheid has affected migration in the region. The book covers three broad areas: macro-level migration trends in sub-Saharan Africa; micro-level factors in South African migration; and a synthesis of current migration theory. A crucial resource for policymakers and development planners, this volume also serves as a useful primer for students of urban planning, economics, demography, sociology, and development studies.

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Story telling is not only for children. It is a powerful way to relay a message because it evokes visual imagery in both the mind and the emotions, and this helps others to connect with the message and its content. Nursing records are nothing other than an informational story that needs to be told so that the whole medical team can obtain a similar understanding of the healthcare user and his or her health status. Record keeping is the first in a series of books aimed primarily at the registered nurse wishing to continue with his/her professional development (CPD). Each title covers one important topic, and has been written by a specialist in that field. The series follows a consistent format and covers issues such as key ethical and legal considerations, relevant legislation, case studies, and practical applications. Record keeping includes: Why do we need to keep records?; nursing records; writing incident reports; legislation; ethics and record keeping; record keeping as a communication tool.
