Top sales list bonsai general

South Africa
What is it? Every few years, bonsai trees should be removed from their containers and the old growing medium replaced. As bonsai grow in very small containers with little growing medium, your choice of medium is important to ensure trees grow healthily for years. This General Soil Mix contains Mature Milled Pine Bark for adequate water retention. Coarse Crushed Silica Stone is added for drainage and to prevent compaction which may deprive the roots of life giving oxygen. Unlike fresh pine bark which some mixes contain, our mature bark will not consume Nitrogen, depriving the bonsai tree of growth. Good drainage reduces risk of root rot and ultimate demise of a tree. How to use? The mix is ready to be used right out of the bag in most cases. Should you require a drier, faster draining mix then add Leca. If you require more water retention then add more Peat Moss. Both components are part of our Bonsai range. Garden soil is too fine and should never be used in growing mixes. Bag Contents 50% Mature Milled Pine Bark 50% Crushed Silica Stone

Scissors are the most commonly used bonsai tool and are the most crucial tool in the bonsai artists toolbox. For the price, these black carbon steel 19cm scissors made in China cannot be beaten. You will be able to use them to cut twigs and even thin branches. Anything thicker and you should consider purchasing the Bonsai Branch Cutter. The differences between scissors designed and made specifically for bonsai and normal scissors are many. Bonsai scissors have a completely different shaped handle which makes a lot of cutting comfortable. The blades are shaped differently and made considerably thicker to enable thicker cuts than a normal scissors can manage. The tips of the blades also slightly overlap to enable clean cuts, which in turn enables faster healing.

Features Particle size = 1 ~ 3mm Growing medium of Japanese bonsai masters High quality Ibaraki brand akadama Hard type (retains shape longest) Exclusively imported from Japan by Bonsai Tree. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 14L bags. Description Akadama is a granular volcanic clay-like (although it is not clay) mineral which occurs naturally in Japan. It has been extensively used by Japanese gardeners and bonsai artists for many centuries as a growing medium for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. It is mined from the surface of the ground, after which it is graded and packaged. Unlike LECA it is not fired at high temperatures however when it is mined from greater depths it tends to be harder or it might be slightly baked. It has many unique qualities, one of which is that when it is wet it has a darker colour so indicates when watering is needed. Akadama is unique as a growing medium and is sought after due to its ability for water retention and nutrients due to its high CEC value. However at the same time it provides porosity and free drainage. Uses This fine (1~3mm) particle size akadama is suited to shohin and general bonsai growing mixes as a top dressing to encourage fine surface rooting. Akadama can be combined with other elements such as crushed stone, composted bark, peat, or for best effect use pumice. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Previous customers: Please note the genuine Japanese pumice (Hyuga) now being imported is slightly different in appearance and is of a superior quality compared to conventional pumice (previous stock). Please read the updated product description below. Please note that 3 different sizes of this product is stocked;   Fine (1-3mm),   Small (3-6mm)   and   Medium (5-8mm). What is it? Japanese pumice, or Hyuga as it is known in Japan is a naturally occurring volcanic product from the south part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. Hyuga vs Pumice These two products are very similar in characteristics however due to the manner in which this Hyuga is formed in nature it is slightly softer and more porous than conventional pumice. In fact Hyuga is so porous it will sink, which reduces erosion when watering.  Due to the porosity of Hyuga aggregates in your growing mixes it enhances: water retention nutrients oxygen It is suitable for a wide range of plant species as it has an essentially neutral pH of 6. How to use? Japanese pumice is recommended for Rhododendron (including Azalea), general pot plants, orchids and it of course forms a crucial part of many bonsai growing mixes. If I had only one soil component to use for bonsai it would be 100% pumice. If you have akadama, add some. - Michael Hagedorn As Hyuga will not under normal circumstances break down it can be sifted and re-used however if you intend doing so a disinfecting treatment using Sporekill is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of spreading fungal or bacterial issues. Hyuga can be combined with other elements such as akadama or peat (no more than 20% of the total mix). Due to the good drainage qualities of hyuga it is very often used to assist a sick tree to regain vigor and health. In such a case 100% Japanese pumice may be used. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Michael Hagedorn 80% pumice and 20% composted pine bark for strong roots and early tree development. Pumice provides the widest range of healthy growing conditions. You can over water it, under-water it, and it creates great fine root growth second only to pumice mixed with about 50% akadama.  Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. These branch cutters have a straight edge. In cheaper branch cutters the blades meet edge to edge. This often results in damaging the tools and blunting the cutting edge quite quickly, which leads to poor or unclean cuts on your trees. Such cuts take longer to heal and healing is not as smooth. However with the Kaneshin cutters the right blade overlaps the top of the left blade. In this way sharpness can be maintained for much longer and the cutter is in general more durable due to the use of better quality materials. Branch cutters, as the name suggests are primarily used to remove unwanted branches from bonsai trees or to shorten sacrifice branches to the desired length. These Kaneshin Concave branch cutters are very versatile tools that can be used for a number of procedures. They are essentially a combination of two tools namely the branch cutter and knob or knuckle cutter, and thus are one of the most popular tools in the toolbox of any serious bonsai artist. They may in fact be considered to be general purpose cutters because they are capable of performing a variety of different cutting actions on different portions of the tree. In certain types of species, such as Chinese maples, the resulting scar tissue can bulge over the area from where a branch was removed is the cut was made flat. A concave cutter with spherical blades or a knuckle cutter is very useful in these circumstances. Either of these tools will create a concave cut so bulging can be avoided as the branch is removed completely from its base and cuts into the branch base to make the resulting cut concave in shape. If a flat cut was made it would be necessary to carve out the cut further, but by employing these tools both steps can be performed in one action. As with all our Kaneshin tools, these concave branch cutters are handmade by highly skilled Japanese craftsmen. Each tool is boxed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Sizes 165mm Material Steel Origin Japan To cut safely without damaging the tool, the thickness of the branch you want to remove should be 1/3 - 1/2 of the size of the blade.
