Further west it is replaced by the related Juniperus scopulorum (Rocky Mountain Juniper) and to the southwest by Juniperus ashei (Ashe Juniper). Juniperus virginiana is a dense slow-growing coniferous evergreen tree that may never become more than a bush on poor soil, but is ordinarily from 520 m tall, with a short trunk 30100 cm diameter. The oldest tree reported, from West Virginia, was 940 years old. The bark is reddish-brown, fibrous, and peels off in narrow strips. The leaves are of two types; sharp, spreading needle-like juvenile leaves 510 cm long, and tightly adpressed scale-like adult leaves 24 mm long; they are arranged in opposite decussate pairs or occasionally whorls of three.   Japanese cedar is a tall, cone shaped evergreen with bluish green foliage and a massive trunk with thick reddish brown bark that shreds and peels in long strips. This is a fast growing tree that, in its native habitat, can get more than 180 feet tall with a trunk diameter exceeding 12 feet. Ornamental specimens are rarely more than 60 feet tall. The branches are arranged in horizontal tiers, ascending at first, then drooping near their ends. The flattened, wedge-shaped leaves are about 1/2 inch long and point forward, while their bases clasp the twigs. The leaves are overlapping and crowded in 5 ranks that spiral around and completely cloak the twigs. Male and female cones, 1 inch or less in length, are on the same tree. Two varieties are recognized: var. japonica has a dense habit and thick, spreading branches; var. sinensis has a looser habit and slender, drooping branches. A fantastic bonsai specimen. " Pinus ponderosa, commonly known as the Ponderosa Pine, Bull Pine, Blackjack Pine, or Western Yellow Pine, is a widespread and variable pine native to western North America. The ponderosa pine is the official state tree of the State of Montana. The Ponderosa Pine has a very distinct bark. Unlike most conifers, it has an orange bark, with black lining the crevasses, where the bark "splits". This is most noticeable amongst older Ponderosa Pines. The tree can often be identified by its characteristic long needles that grow in tufts of two or three, depending on subspecies. The USA Register of Big Trees lists a Ponderosa Pine that is 72m tall and 820 cm in circumference. Description All bonsai pots have at least one drainage hole in the bottom to allow for water to escape from the pot and help prevent root rot. However leaving these holes uncovered will result in your bonsai tree soil escaping and creating a void under the tree. This needs to be prevented. This plastic drainage mesh is specifically for this purpose Features This drainage mesh has a specific aperture (gap between the plastic strands) to allow for finer particulates and water to drain freely but retains the bonsai soil you require for healthy growth of your tree. The aperture is also not so fine as to clog quickly, preventing drainage and very likely leading to the downfall of your tree.
