Acer buergerianum  Bonsai Seeds Acer buergerianum, the Trident Maple, Three Pronged Maple or Chinese Maple is a vigorous species and is grown in many parts of the world as a 'Street' tree due to its tolerance of pruning, dry soil and air-pollution; these attributes also make it an excellent subject for bonsai treatment. Native to Korea, China and Japan, Trident Maples can reach heights of 10 metres or more when planted in open soil. The bark is buff and flakes to reveal a soft-orange underbark which gets darker as the tree matures. In South Africa, Trident Maples are difficult to locate. Not stocked in garden centres and tree nurseries, they are also unavailable to collect from the wild. Tridents nearly always have to be sourced from bonsai nurseries as imported stock or grown from seed. Maples are unrivalled for their autumn foliage colouring and variety of leaf shapes and textures. Maples are a very popular choice for the art of bonsai and many are compact enough for the average garden. Their flowers are green, yellow, orange or red and though individually small, the effect of an entire tree in flower can be striking in several species. Bark is another feature of some maples, although usually smooth grey or greenish, in the group known as the ‘snake bark maples’ it has longitudinal grey or red-brown stripes and in others it is flaky or papery. Most of the approximate 129 species come from East Asia, particularly China, where over 80 species can be found, Japan, with more than 20 species, and the eastern Himalayas. Most species are deciduous, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Most maples prefer a cool, moist climate with ample rainfall in spring and summer. A planting position sheltered from strong winds suits them best. For best autumn colour, grow them in a neutral to acid soil. Propagation is generally from seed but grafting is also an option. Platanus occidentalis Bonsai Seeds Common Names: American sycamore Tree, American Plane Tree or Buttonwood Tree Seeds An American sycamore tree is easily recognized by its mottled exfoliating bark. The bark of all trees has to yield to a growing trunk; in the case of trees such as the Silver Maple and the Shagbark Hickory the process is not hidden, but the Sycamore shows the process of exfoliation more openly than any other tree. The bark of the trunk and larger limbs flakes off in great irregular masses, leaving the surface mottled, and greenish-white, gray and brown. Sometimes the smaller limbs look as if whitewashed. The explanation is found in the rigid texture of the bark tissue, which lacks the elasticity common to the bark of other trees, so it is incapable of stretching to accommodate the growth of the wood underneath and the tree sloughs it off. A sycamore can grow to massive proportions, typically reaching up to 30 to 40 meters high and 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter when grown in deep soils. The largest of the species have been measured to 51 meters, and nearly 4 meters in diameter. Historical specimens over 5 meters thick have been reported. The sycamore is able to endure a big city environment and has been extensively planted as a shade tree. It bears transplanting well and grows rapidly. Albizia julibrissin  Bonsai Seeds Albizia julibrissin commonly known as Persian Silk Tree, Silk Floss Tree or Pink Silk Tree is a species of tree in the family Fabaceae, native to southwestern and eastern Asia. Albizia julibrissin is a small deciduous tree growing to 5–12 m tall, with a broad crown of level or arching branches. The bark is dark greenish grey in colour and striped vertically as it gets older. The leaves are bipinnate, 20–45 cm long and 12–25 cm broad, divided into 6–12 pairs of pinnae, each with 20–30 pairs of leaflets; the leaflets are oblong, 1–1.5 cm long and 2–4 mm broad. The flowers are produced throughout the summer in dense inflorescences, the individual flowers with small calyx and corola (except the central ones), and a tight cluster of stamens 2–3 cm long, white or pink with a white base, looking like silky threads. What is it? Growing bonsai from seed can be a very rewarding experience. Using a good seedling medium ensures that your seedlings get off to the best start possible.  Our Professional Seedling mix contains a mixture of Perlite, Coir and Peat Moss. Perlite is volcanic glass used to enhance aeration and drainage. It also retains moisture. Peat Moss is said to be a sterile medium and is harvested decayed plant material. Useful in this mix as it retains moisture and is very light. Coir is made from the husk of the coconut. Similar to Peat Moss in most respects however it is not as moisture retentive. How to use it Empty the contents of the bag into a suitable container with many drainage holes. Plant your seeds as directed and then water thoroughly. Place in a warm, sunny position although not in full sun, and keep slightly moist at all times. Damp sheets of newsprint paper are useful as a sort of mulch, covering the surface until the seeds germinate and can then be removed and discarded. Bag contents 30% Perlite 20% Peat Moss 50% Coir

What is it? Vermiculite is exfoliated hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Like Groperl, it is extremely absorbent and lightweight, and can absorb many times its own weight in water. Unlike Groperl, it does retain nutrients. This coarse Vermiculite is ideal for use as a growing medium component in container plant culture as it promotes drainage. Vermiculite can be combined with other components such as Peat Moss or Leca from our Bonsai range to produce a soilless growing media for bonsai artists. These growing mediums promote enhanced root growth aided by Vermiculites effect on aeration. Any applied fertilizer is absorbed and is slowly released as the bonsai requires them. How to use? Alone or mixed with Peat Moss, Vermiculite can be used to germinate seeds. As a growing medium component, it should constitute no more than 20% of the total mix or the other components must retain very little moisture, such as Leca from our Bonsai range.
