Bonsai pots tend to have large holes for drainage hence the need for mesh to keep the growing medium in place. The small holes in the mesh allow water to drain naturally holding the soil in place for good tree health.  The mesh is sold in 3 sizes: Large - 24cm x 24cm (Enough mesh for up to 8 pots) Medium - 24cm x 12cm  (Enough mesh for up to 4 pots) Small - 12cm x 12cm  (Enough mesh for up to 2 pots) Please note that the mesh is handcut and accordingly there can be small variances in the size by 1cm.   Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

These plastic labels are most useful to identify bonsai trees, cuttings, seedling or yamadori bonsai trees. You can use a permanent marker to record species name, planting dates and other important information which may otherwise get lost. To use, record the required information on your label and push the label in the soil in the bonsai pot. The plastic spike makes insertion into the growing medium very easy. The labels are manufactured from plastic which will withstand the strong sun and its UV rays, here in South Africa.  Size 85mm in total height, including spike Pack size 6pc Material Plastic Origin Japan

Acer buergerianum  Bonsai Seeds Acer buergerianum, the Trident Maple, Three Pronged Maple or Chinese Maple is a vigorous species and is grown in many parts of the world as a 'Street' tree due to its tolerance of pruning, dry soil and air-pollution; these attributes also make it an excellent subject for bonsai treatment. Native to Korea, China and Japan, Trident Maples can reach heights of 10 metres or more when planted in open soil. The bark is buff and flakes to reveal a soft-orange underbark which gets darker as the tree matures. In South Africa, Trident Maples are difficult to locate. Not stocked in garden centres and tree nurseries, they are also unavailable to collect from the wild. Tridents nearly always have to be sourced from bonsai nurseries as imported stock or grown from seed. Maples are unrivalled for their autumn foliage colouring and variety of leaf shapes and textures. Maples are a very popular choice for the art of bonsai and many are compact enough for the average garden. Their flowers are green, yellow, orange or red and though individually small, the effect of an entire tree in flower can be striking in several species. Bark is another feature of some maples, although usually smooth grey or greenish, in the group known as the ‘snake bark maples’ it has longitudinal grey or red-brown stripes and in others it is flaky or papery. Most of the approximate 129 species come from East Asia, particularly China, where over 80 species can be found, Japan, with more than 20 species, and the eastern Himalayas. Most species are deciduous, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Most maples prefer a cool, moist climate with ample rainfall in spring and summer. A planting position sheltered from strong winds suits them best. For best autumn colour, grow them in a neutral to acid soil. Propagation is generally from seed but grafting is also an option. Seed germination is aided by stratification. On offer is a pack of 10 Seeds

Please select your desired pot from the drop down list above. Screen colour may not exactly match the actual colour of the pot, this is unavoidable. Size may differ slightly from stated. Made in South Africa Willow Potteries is a South African Bonsai pottery specializing in high quality handmade ceramics. Willow potteries strives to create new and interesting pot shapes every year to keep it fresh. Their glazes are also one of their signatures being vibrant and different. Quality is very important. Why select these pots? These pots are available in a wide variety of shapes. They are ideal for small bonsai, succulents or accent plantings. Available in an exciting range of colours which are easily matched up with a bonsai tree; including blues, greens and browns. Selecting a glaze colour When choosing a pot of a certain colour, usually one takes into consideration the feature of the tree which you wish to enhance and then select a complementary colour to that feature. A complementary colour is the colour opposite another on the colour wheel. For example the pink flowers of a Cape May or a pink Chinese Snow Rose will be best shown off if the tree is planted in a green pot as the flowers are the most attractive feature of the tree and green is the complementary colour to pink. Fruit is emphasized by using the complementary colour to that of the fruit. So the orange berries of a firethorn bonsai tree will be best shown off when planted in a blue container. Always keep in mind that the most important item is the tree and the pot must be subordinate to it. To read more about choosing a pot read this helpful guide.

Abies concolor  Bonsai Seeds Abies concolor commonly known as White Fir is native to the western United States, through the Rocky Mountains from southern Idaho south through Utah and Colorado to New Mexico, Arizona and also Nevada. When mature it can reach a height of 20-25m or even a little more used in a garden or landscape situation a height of 12-15m is more usual. In any case the White Fir is fairly slow growing at 30-45cm/year even with good growing conditions so it takes quite a while to outgrow its position in a large garden. It has a pyramidal shape and horizontal branching with the lower branches drooping toward the ground and for the best visual result it should be grown in an open area so the lower branches can touch the ground. When branched to the ground the shade is sufficient to kill off the underlying grass. The foliage is a wonderful blue-grey which appears much like that of the Colorado blue spruce. This makes it popular as an ornamental landscaping tree and as a Christmas tree. The foliage is also used in large quantities for Christmas wreaths and decorations owing to its soft needles and generally excellent needle retention and abundance. It is regarded as one of the most adaptable and less site exacting species of the fir genus and will withstand heat and drought better than most firs and can tolerate winter temperatures to -40°C. For germination the seeds require a period of moist pre-chilling also known as stratification before the seeds should be sown, this takes around 6 weeks in the fridge and is not difficult to do. On offer is a pack of 10 Seeds
