Beginning with a brief overview of the historical development of the industry, the author examines policy issues including the consequences of dealing with deteriorating infrastructure, an aging workforce, climate warming, funding for repair and replacement of facilities and the demands for meeting the needs of a growing population. In addition to reviewing issues related to various management tasks, he includes chapters on physical and cyber threats and management ethics, liberally laced with real-life examples of utilities' dealings with these challenges. Many tables, figures and boxes expand on key points from the text. Accessible and comprehensive, this thoughtful exploration of the various issues facing administrators and operators in public utilities in the new century will prove a useful overview for students of business and economics, utility staff and directors of local utility governing boards. This new edition has been fully revised and expanded to incorporate the key events, trends and debates that are shaping development today, such as humanitarianism and the global refugee crisis, the growing number of fragile states, and the contested nature of trade and trade deals. Building on the book s original framework, the second edition also includes three new chapters which explore development in relation to global policy formation, focusing on the end of the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2015 and the start of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which will run until 2030. Designed to offer something different to the standard introductions to the topic, this issues-driven text examines the debates that have generated the most interest and passion among practitioners and non-practitioners alike. Always attentive to the contested and plural nature of the field, it makes the case for a genuinely interdisciplinary approach which takes full account of the impact of globalization. Both wide-ranging and critical, Understanding Development is the essential student guide to one of the most challenging subjects of our age. Host Americans -- 96%, to be exact -- are somehow involved in the arts, whether as audience participants, hobbyists, or via broadcast, recording, video, or the Internet. The contribution of the arts to the U.S. economy is stunning: the non-profit arts industry alone contributes more than $857 billion per year, and America's fine and performing arts enjoy world-class status. Despite its size, quality, and economic impact, the arts community is not articulate about how they serve public interests, and few citizens have an appreciation of the myriad public policies that affect American arts and culture. The contributors to this volume argue that U.S. policy can -- and should -- support the arts and that the arts, in turn, serve a broad rather than an elite public. Indeed, increased support for the arts and culture equals good economic and trade policy; it also enhances the quality of life and of community, and helps sustain the creativity of American artists and organizations. By encouraging policymakers to systematically start investigating the crucial role and importance of all the arts in the United States. The Public Life of the Arts in America moves the field forward with fresh ideas, new concepts, and important new data. Features Summary Despite its size and its economic impact, the US arts community is not articulate about how it serves the public interest. This book encourages policy makers to investigate the crucial importance of the arts in the US... Murrow, ended a quarter-century career with the Columbia Broadcasting System to join the administration of John F. Kennedy as director of the United States Information Agency (USIA). Charged with promoting a positive image abroad, the agency sponsored overseas research programs, produced documentaries, and operated the Voice of America to spread the country's influence throughout the world. As director of the USIA, Murrow hired African Americans for top spots in the agency and leveraged his celebrity status at home to challenge all Americans to correct the scourge of domestic racism that discouraged developing countries, viewed as strategic assets, from aligning with the West. Using both overt and covert propaganda programs, Murrow forged a positive public image for Kennedy administration policies in an unsettled era that included, the rise of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and support for Vietnam's Ngo Dinh Diem. Murrow's Cold War tackles an understudied portion of Murrow's life, reveals how one of America's most revered journalists improved the global perception of the United States, and exposes the importance of public diplomacy in the advancement of U.S. foreign policy. Features Summary In 1961, America's most prominent journalist, Edward R. Murrow joined the administration of John F. Kennedy as director of the US Information Agency. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 20 - 25 working days We have, in recent decades, been able to witness a veritable revolution in the world economy, known as `globalization'. Generally, the term is connected to the rapid increase of the free movement of goods, capital, people, ideas, information and knowledge around the globe. This book contributes to the meso- and micro-economic literature on innovation and entrepreneurship in the global economy. Extending our understanding of the many different ways that innovation and entrepreneurship contribute to economic development and growth in a globalized economy, the expert contributors highlight that the current wave of globalization has been a period of exceptional entrepreneurship both among large multinational firms and among independent entrepreneurs. They demonstrate that location matters for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and clarify that public policy in a globalized economy must stress knowledge and ideas as the source of competitiveness and economic growth. Both graduates and post graduates, along with university researchers, will find this book to be useful in their studies, particularly those with an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship research, regional economics, economic geography and international economics. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days From the ongoing issues of poverty, health, housing and employment to the recent upsurge of lethal police-community relations, the black working class stands at the center of perceptions of social and racial conflict today. Journalists and public policy analysts often discuss the black poor as "consumers" rather than "producers," as "takers" rather than "givers," and as "liabilities" instead of "assets." In his engrossing new history, Workers on Arrival, Joe William Trotter, Jr. refutes these perceptions by charting the black working class's vast contributions to the making of America. Covering the last four hundred years since Africans were first brought to Virginia in 1619, Trotter traces black workers' complicated journey from the transatlantic slave trade through the American Century to the demise of the industrial order in the 21st century. At the center of this compelling, fast-paced narrative are the actual experiences of these African American men and women. A dynamic and vital history of remarkable contributions despite repeated setbacks, Workers on Arrival expands our understanding of America's economic and industrial growth, its cities, ideas, and institutions, and the real challenges confronting black urban communities today. In the "Palace without Rival" at Nineveh, the Assyrian King Sennacherib immortalised his 701 B.C. campaign against Jerusalem with a series of spectacular wall relief sculptures. Amazingly, when the palace was rediscovered twenty-five centuries later in 1847, the sculpture in the throne room areas remained largely intact. But today, air pollution, animal damage, vandalism, neglect, and - worst of all - looting for the international antiquities market by Iraq's own sanctions-striken people, have brought ruin to the palace. The splendour of Sennacherib's palace now survives only in this irreplaceable book. Art historian and archaeologist John Malcolm Russell, who in 1989 set about creating the only extensive photographic record of the palace architecture, sculptures, and inscriptions ever made, has preserved in pictures much that has since been lost. This book is not only a major contribution to the understanding of Assyrian palatial art and architecture, it is also the key to safeguarding the treasures of Sennacherib's palace and other ancient sites, for Russell proposes standards in archaeological excavation, documentation, and public policy that will help preserve cultural artifacts in an unstable world.   Hardcover: 192 pages Publisher: Yale University Press; 1st edition (December 31, 1998) Language: English Condition: As good as new - slight shelf wear
