Polaskia is a genus of two tree -like cactus species, placed in the Cactaceae family. It is named after the American amateur botanist, Charles Polaski. Both species grows to 5 meters in height. Both present primitive characteristics, but Polaskia chichipe is nearer to Myrtillocactus while Polaskia chende is nearer to Stenocereus. The genus is found in the Southern Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca. They are columnar cacti which branches as it ages with many branches on a short trunk. Stems are ribbed with fairly shallow spaces between ribs. Areoles are spaced 2 or 3 cm apart along the ribs. Spines are short and stout, numbering 8-10 radials and one central. Spines may not be present at all - especially on mature plants.  Flowers are widely-opened cups of pinkish white or yellow-green - with or without spines. The fruits are small fleshy berries. They are considered fairly easy to grow and germinate freely from seed. These cacti are perfect for rockeries, where they will give your garden structural height or as potted plants on a sunny patio. Either way you are assured of many years of joy. Polaskia chichipe is a columnar cactus, cultivated for its edible fruits known as Chichituna, Chichipe or Chichibe. It is also grown for its valuable branches which, when dried make excellent fuel wood. Plants under cultivation have larger and sweeter fruits and a much longer period of fruit production. The flowers are self-compatible so you would only need one plant for it to produce fruits. Polaskia chichipe is a columnar tree-like cactus with many curved branches, up to 5 m tall. It has a few taxonomic synonyms including Cereus chichipe, Lemaireocereus chichipe, Myrillocactus chichipe, Cereus mixtecensis and Lemaireocereus mixtecensis. Give it good drainage and use open and free draining mineral compost that allows the roots to breath. They like only a short winter's rest and should be kept almost completely dry during the winter months.  If the soil is allowed to be dry for too long root loss could occur but equally the same result would transpire if the plants are both wet and cold. From spring onwards the plant will begin to grow and watering should be increased gradually until late spring when the plant should be in full growth.

  Argyroderma is a genus consisting of over 50 species of succulents in the ice plant family from South Africa. These distinctive plants are among those known as "living stones", because their highly succulent, usually stem less, blue-green leaves occur at ground level and can resemble small stones. They form small clumps of a few or many paired, usually cylindrical to egg-shaped leaves that are cleft in the centre. Each stem bears just 2 leaves per season but may produce offsets over the years. In some species the old leaves persist and form a short column on which new leaves develop. Solitary daisy-like flowers, usually white, yellow, or purple, appear in the cleft. Dwarf, attractive purple flowers making this species a great potting specimen. The young specimens are columnar but as they grow older ribs form and they take on a barrel form. Most of the species are solitary but some, such as Ferocactus robustus and Ferocactus glaucescens, form clumps. The typical habitat is hot and very arid, and the plants have adapted to exploit water movement to concentrate their biomass in areas where water is likely to be present.           Like Sclerocactus, Ferocactus typically grow in areas where water flows irregularly or depressions where water can accumulate for short periods of time. They are most often found growing along arroyos (washes) where their seeds have been subjected to scarification due to water movement, but they oddly also tend to grow along ridges in spots where depressions have formed and can hold water for some period of time. Ferocactus have very shallow root systems and are easily uprooted during flash floods. The "fishhook" spines and the armoured web of spines enclosing the cactus body in many species of this genus are adaptations which allow the plant to move to more favourable locations. In cultivation Ferocactus require full sun, little water, and good drainage. They are popular as indoor houseplants providing they receive a few hours of sunlight a day. They are well suited for growing in pots and rockeries. Propagation is usually from seeds as most do not produce off-sets.   Androcymbium is a genus in the Colchicaceae family found in Africa and the Mediterranean. The common names for species in the genus are cup-and-saucer and men-in-a-boat.
