Papers relative to the events and negotiations which preceded the opening of hostilities between Germany on the one hand, and Poland, Great Britain and France on the other. The present Yellow Book is a collection of the most important among the documents which bring out clearly the course of French diplomatic action from September 29, 1938, the date of the Munich Agreement, to September 3, 1939, the date when France and Great Britain, in execution of their pledges of assistance, declared themselves to be in a state of war with Germany. This publication is limited to the general theme of Franco-German relations, as it clearly was not possible to find space for all the other problems on which our diplomacy was active during the same period (Spanish affairs, Franco-Italian relations, events in the Far East, negotiations with Moscow and pacts of assistance). 368 pages, in good condition, R50 postage in SA.

Hofmeyr by Alan Paton. Biography and valuable historical overview of the politics of the period. The life of Jan Hofmeyr seen through his friend, Alan Paton’s eyes: a brilliant man, genius, principal of a university at 24, destined to be the successor of Jan Smuts, but died young. Of interest in this book is the influence of Hofmeyr’s mother, a forceful, indomitable woman, whose hold over him was overpowering and unforgiving, and who did not attend his funeral because it is said because he defied her wishes. Literature, as Joyce tells us through the character of Stephen Dedalus, 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'. Written over a seven-year period, from to , Ulysses has survived bowderlization, legal action and bitter controversy. An undisputed modernist classic, its ceaseless verbal inventiveness and astonishingly wide-ranging allusions confirm its standing as an imperishable monument to the human condition. Declan Kiberd says in his introduction Ulysses is 'An endlessly open book of utopian epiphanies. It holds a mirror up to the colonial capital that was Dublin on 16 June , but it also offers redemptive glimpses of a future world which might be made over in terms of those utopian moments.' This edition is the standard Random House/Bodley Head text that first appeared in . Features Summary Written over a seven-year period, from to , this book has survived bowdlerization, legal action and controversy. The novel deals with the events of one day in Dublin... Magnus Malan - My life with the SA Defence Force - Protea - 2006 - Hard gloss in very good, clean and tight condition. As a schoolboy at the age of thirteen, Magnus Malan had already run away to join what was then the Union Defence Force. This was to no avail, of course, but ever since he was permitted to join the Physical Training Battalion in 1946, for a period of some 45 years, his career and life has been closely entwined with the South African Defence Force. Malan’s military career took him to many places in Southern Africa: Robben Island, the former South West Africa, where the Territorial Force was charged with protecting the South African Mandate territory, to the Military Academy in Saldanha and the Castle in Cape Town. As Chief of the Army and later Chief of the Defence Force he was closely involved in South Africa’s incursion into Angola in 1975 and 1976, and also in many cross-border operations in the years thereafter. Malan then entered politics, and will be particularly remembered as Minister of Defence during the troubled 1980s. Malan offers a brief account of the influence that political developments in Southern Africa since 1960 had on the structures and functions of the South African Defence Force; on the successes of Armscor, and on South Africa’s nuclear arms capability. He also provides valuable context for a period of many political and military events; a period of immense importance to the present generation and their descendants, but which has become almost forgotten. The book pays tribute to all those who contributed to the successes of the South African Defence Force and Armscor in a critical era of our history.

This book is a record of the insignia and history of the Rhodesian armed forces from inception to 1980. Rhodesia had a fascinating history that characterised the pioneer spirit of early Africa. The continent of Africa was in a stage of being colonised by the various European countries. The pioneers of Rhodesia followed in the footsteps of the early Portuguese explorers and the inquisitive and bold such as David Livingstone and Cecil John Rhodes led the way. Legends were born out of the bravery and tenacity of the early settlers. It must be noted that the politics and motivations of the various political parties are not discussed in this book at all. There are many writers who have looked at this from different viewpoints and there are many books published on the subject. The purpose of this book is not to repeat the good or the bad of the motives of the leaders and politicians of the country. It is, rather, a reflection on the spirit and actions of the military kith and kin of a country. Paperback, 156 pages Published November 2009 4th Edition This book is Printed-On-Demand and a possible waiting period & delayed delivery may apply.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The Wars of the Roses which took place in England during the 15th century have passed into folk-memory as bloody, vicious struggles for power, with the throne as the prize and ordinary people as the victims. William Shakespeare's propaganda for the Tudor dynasty played a great part in creating this legend. Yet the truth was rather more complex. Although power changed hands often, and sometimes with bewildering speed, English society in general was relatively stable, and prosperous. The Wars of the Roses represent a stage in the evolution of a British nation, emerging from the long shadow of medieval France that had lain over these islands since the Norman Conquest. This popular book covers the period beautifully. Features Summary The Wars of the Roses ushered out the Middle Ages and beckoned in the Tudor period.
