About the product Number 458 of an edition limited to 510 copies. Text facsimile of the Saul Solomon printing of 1885. 8vo; original brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with publisher's device in blind to upper cover; pp. (vi) + 107 + (i) + 5, incl. index. Occasional fox spot. Near-fine condition."Louis Henry Meurant combined enterprise and ability with high ideals, and his activities during his long and varied life illuminate many aspects of the history of South Africa during the nineteenth Century.. In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Meurant: Sixty Years Ago; or, Reminiscences of the Struggle for the Freedom of the Press in South Africa and the Establishment of the First Newspaper in the Eastern Province

Previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper. The book also has some foxing on the front/rear endpapers and lightly throughout the book. Light cup ring stain on the rear board. A tightly bound copy, but in good condition. Binding: Hardcover  Pages: 106 Dimensions: 18.5 x 12.5 x 2 cm +++ by W. A. Millar +++ Millar enjoys a special place in S.A. rugby history. Initially not selected for the 1906 tour, he was included at the last moment due to an injury to another player. He captained the 1912 Springboks on the second tour to Europe and was the first man to take a Springbok head on tour with the team! An outstanding boxer and walker, he did not allow a Boer War wound deter him from playing sport. Millar's book provides unbiased commentary on many of the games of the 1906/12 tours. Despite being severely wounded in World War I, he continued to serve rugby in SA in his later years.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days WINNER of the 2013 Katharine Briggs Award This book uses the nineteenth-century legend of Spring-Heeled Jack to analyse and challenge current notions of Victorian popular cultures. Starting as oral rumours, this supposedly supernatural entity moved from rural folklore to metropolitan press sensation, co-existing in literary and theatrical forms before finally degenerating into a nursery lore bogeyman to frighten children. A mercurial and unfixed cultural phenomenon, Spring-Heeled Jack found purchase in both older folkloric traditions and emerging forms of entertainment. Through this intriguing study of a unique and unsettling figure, Karl Bell complicates our appreciation of the differences, interactions and similarities between various types of popular culture between 1837 and 1904. The book draws upon a rich variety of primary source material including folklorist accounts, street ballads, several series of "penny dreadful" stories (and illustrations), journals, magazines, newspapers, comics, court accounts, autobiographies and published reminiscences. The Legend of Spring-Heeled Jack is impressively researched social history and provides a fascinating insight into Victorian cultures. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in nineteenth-century English social and cultural history, folklore or literature. Karl Bell is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth. Features Summary An intriguing study of a unique and unsettling cultural phenomenon in Victorian England.
