Initially not selected for the 1906 tour, he was included at the last moment due to an injury to another player. He captained the 1912 Springboks on the second tour to Europe and was the first man to take a Springbok head on tour with the team! An outstanding boxer and walker, he did not allow a Boer War wound deter him from playing sport. Millar's book provides unbiased commentary on many of the games of the 1906/12 tours. Despite being severely wounded in World War I, he continued to serve rugby in SA in his later years.

Rather, Chesnut's significance comes from her extensive diary. Her commentary and reminiscences about the Confederate era provide an excellent window into the life and death of the Confederate nation. Her keen insight into political, economic, and social developments makes her an excellent source to understand the Southern homefront during the Civil War. Professor DeCredico uses Chesnut's life to address the role of women in the South, the ideology and leadership of the Southern white elite, and how Southern women in general and Chesnut in particular viewed the institution of slavery. Furthermore, DeCredico shows how Mary Chesnut's privileged position gave her an ideal perspective for observing and commenting on the events of the Confederacy. Hardcover: Rose's book takes the reader through quarter of a century of service with the Regiment. From Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow in early 1930's to Palestine where Arabs and Jews were fighting among themselves and against the British. Then there was action in Somaliland in the early past of the war, India and with the Chindits in Burma. Those were the days when the regiments fought hard and played hard too: none more than the "Forty-twa". The author is a born raconteur. Whether in his letters home or his reminiscences of the events and personalities. He knew when to be serious. When his Jocks were being unfairly treated, he could be a dragon to the Staff and his surprises. Contained in this book are references to his family and particularly his brothers. There are glimpses of the grand old life before The War and more recent times. No reader can fail to be amused, saddened, impressed and above all charmed by this book.

Fair to good condition."This is not an autobiography in the usual sense but an attempt to show the influences in the life of a young South African of the first generation, in the period between the end of the Boer War and the outbreak of the first World War. Until 1914 I knew only the Cape Peninsula. These reminiscences, therefore, are of that narrow strip of land between Cape Town and Cape Point, separated from the mainland by the Cape Flats."

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In this riveting new book, John Laband, pre-eminent historian of the Zulu Kingdom, tackles some of the questions that swirl around the assassination in 1828 of King Shaka, the celebrated founder of the Zulu Kingdom and war leader of legendary brilliance: Why did prominent members of the royal house conspire to kill him? Just how significant a part did the white hunter-traders settled at Port Natal play in their royal patron's downfall? Why were Shaka's relations with the British Cape Colony key to his survival? And why did the powerful army he had created acquiesce so tamely in the usurpation of the throne by Dingane, his half-brother and assassin? In his search for answers Laband turns to the Zulu voice heard through recorded oral testimony and praise-poems, and to the written accounts and reminiscences of the Port Natal trader-hunters and the despatches of Cape officials. In the course of probing and assessing this evidence the author vividly brings the early Zulu kingdom and its inhabitants to life. He throws light on this elusive character of and his own unpredictable intentions, while illuminating the fears and ambitions of those attempting to prosper and survive in his hazardous kingdom: a kingdom that nevertheless endured in all its essential characteristics, particularly militarily, until its destruction fifty one years later in 1879 by the British; and whose fate, legend has it, Shaka predicted with his dying breath.
