Unconventional Reminiscences - William Charles Scully - Paperback as new. William Charles Scully was Irish-born and largely self-educated. As his Unconventional Reminiscences describes, at fourteen he set off for South Africa's diamond fields to find his fortune and during the 1870s lived as a digger panning for gold. For the rest of the nineteenth century he worked as a magistrate in remote areas of Namaqualand and the Transkei, which he introduced to the world's literary map.

In 1828 he moved to Graaff-Reinet, and from there accompanied a party of hunters across the Orange River. On his return he bought the printing press of Godlonton and Stringfellow, which had previously been confiscated by Governor Donkin, and set up a Printing Works in Grahamstown, when only twenty years of age. The border Settlers immediately implored him to bring out a newspaper, and he decided to establish the Graham's Town Journal. Sixty Years Ago gives an interesting account of all that this involved, and includes many light-hearted anecdotes of life on the frontier in those perilous days. The first number appeared on December 30th 1831, and in 1832 Godlonton joined Meurant as partner, and was thus re-united with the printing press that had originally been his." L. H. Meurant: Sixty Years Ago; or, Reminiscences of the Struggle for the Freedom of the Press in South Africa and the Establishment of the First Newspaper in the Eastern Province

Initially not selected for the 1906 tour, he was included at the last moment due to an injury to another player. He captained the 1912 Springboks on the second tour to Europe and was the first man to take a Springbok head on tour with the team! An outstanding boxer and walker, he did not allow a Boer War wound deter him from playing sport. Millar's book provides unbiased commentary on many of the games of the 1906/12 tours. Despite being severely wounded in World War I, he continued to serve rugby in SA in his later years.

Paperback. English. Jacana. 2004. In good condition. Imagine you are in an aeroplane at daybreak. You have just woken up to an announcement by the pilot that the long flight will be over in a few minutes. A city tilts towards you as the plane approaches. You catch a glimpse of street-lamps, cars silently torching the soft grey air, a few yellow windows in the massed darkness of buildings. You are filled with the presence of this place as it stirs from the intimacy of the night. Now imagine that this is not a city of the present but a city of the past, your past; a place you have not lived in for decades, and which you are returning to as if it continued to be all it had ever been before you left. The lights you see are your own glittering, floating memories, stretching across the years, some of them highly personal, others shared with neighbours, schoolmates, people you might never even have met but who once lived in the same place at the same time as you did. I Remember King Kong (The Boxer) is a book of reminiscences which are, and could only be, South African in their timbre, scope and feeling. The memories, some personal and some public, will take you on a journey to a time and place that you'll savour long after you have put the book down.

Cloth partially sunned and mottled; ownership inscription to front free endpaper; scattered, moderate foxing. Fair to good condition."This is not an autobiography in the usual sense but an attempt to show the influences in the life of a young South African of the first generation, in the period between the end of the Boer War and the outbreak of the first World War. Until 1914 I knew only the Cape Peninsula. These reminiscences, therefore, are of that narrow strip of land between Cape Town and Cape Point, separated from the mainland by the Cape Flats."

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Born into the plantation gentry of South Carolina, granted the advantages of wealth, social position, and education by virtue of her family and her marriage to another prominent South Carolina family, Mary Chesnut has emerged as one of the key figures in American history, but not because of a career, her family, or her involvement in a humanitarian cause. Rather, Chesnut's significance comes from her extensive diary. Her commentary and reminiscences about the Confederate era provide an excellent window into the life and death of the Confederate nation. Her keen insight into political, economic, and social developments makes her an excellent source to understand the Southern homefront during the Civil War. Professor DeCredico uses Chesnut's life to address the role of women in the South, the ideology and leadership of the Southern white elite, and how Southern women in general and Chesnut in particular viewed the institution of slavery. Furthermore, DeCredico shows how Mary Chesnut's privileged position gave her an ideal perspective for observing and commenting on the events of the Confederacy. Features Summary Chesnut's keen insight into political, economic, and social developments makes her an excellent source to understand the Southern homefront during the Civil War..
