Condition: Good. Name of previous owner inside. This classic collection of Nelson Mandela’s articles, speeches, letters from underground and the transcripts from his trials was first published in . Overnight, No Easy Walk to Freedom became an indispensable guide to the political thought of a man who was to become one of the twentieth century’s greatest statesmen. Twenty years into South Africa’s democracy Mandela’s voice is greatly missed. No Easy Walk to Freedom is not only a vital historical document but also offers us the opportunity to re-engage with Mandela’s thinking on issues such as nationalisation, the independence of the judiciary, land redistribution, the need for a strong constitution and the role of the strike in political discourse. There are many books about Mandela, but No Easy Walk to Freedom shows us the man in his own words before he became the global icon. This collection showcases Mandela’s opening gambit as a politician of global significance and as such it deserves to be read to understand just what it was that drove and inspired the young freedom fighter. In this account, readers will encounter a more militant Mandela than they may remember, but a Mandela no less sure-footed in his arguments or in any way less politically astute. Part of Mandela’s genius was to find a way to listen to the views of all sides before constructing a solution that was the best possible outcome for society as a whole – rather than privileging one group over another. This pragmatic approach is now missing in the modern South African political arena, which makes it particularly refreshing to read the thoughts of a man whose pragmatism brought about one of the most miraculous political transformations the world has ever seen. No one who wants to understand the political thinking that made Mandela one of the most important statesmen of our time should be without a copy.

Subtitle: South Africa's Controversial Cross-Border Raid, Angola Series: Africa@War Series Volume 3 Author: Mike McWilliams Publisher: Helion and Company / 30 Degrees South Publishers () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 64 Dimensions: 29.5 x 20.9 x 0.5 cm +++ by Mike McWilliams +++ Battle for Cassinga is written as a firsthand account by an ordinary South African paratrooper who was at the assault on the Angolan headquarters of PLAN, the armed wing of SWAPO. The book relates why the South African government took the political risk in attacking the fortress in an external operation and examines the SWAPO claims that Cassinga was a refugee camp guarded by a few PLAN soldiers. It also explains why Sam Nujoma the SWAPO leader had no option but to perpetuate this falsehood. The battle, although a resounding success, suffered some setbacks which could have been disastrous to the South African paratroopers had they not maintained the initiative. The improvisations made by the commander Col Jan Breytenbach ensured that a flawed jump and poor intelligence did not adversely affect the outcome. The landmines laid by the South Africans, together with the brave actions of the South African Air Force pilots saved the day, allowing the remaining forces to withdraw safely. Battle for Cassinga looks at all the players in a critical light. SWAPO and PLAN, the SADF and the commanders from both sides, Dimo Amaambo of PLAN and Jan Breytenbach of the SADF as well as the brave soldiers from both sides who fought for their political ideologies but perhaps, more importantly, for their own band of brothers.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. Subtitle: Military Operations from Independence to the Mercenary Revolt Series: Africa@War Volume 6 Author: Andrew Hudson Publisher: Helion and Company / 30 Degrees South Publishers () ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good. Binding: Softcover Pages: 64 Dimensions: 29.5 x 20.9 x 0.5 cm +++ by Andrew Hudson +++ Post-independence events in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are a veritable Gordian knot. The ambitions of Congolese political leaders, Cold War rivalry, Pan-Africanism, Belgium's continued economic interests in the country's mineral wealth, and the strategic perceptions of other southern African states all conspired to wrack Africa's second largest country with uprisings, rebellions and military interventions for almost a decade. Congo Unravelled solves the intractable complexity of this violent period by dispassionately outlining the sequence of political and military events that took place in the troubled country. The reader is systematically taken through the first military attempts to stabilize the country after independence and the two distinguishing military campaigns of the decade - the United Nations military operations (Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo, or ONUC) to end the secession of the Katanga Province, and the Dragon Operations led by Belgian paratroopers, supported by the US Air Force, launched to end the insurgency in the east of the country - are chronicled in detail. Finally, the mercenary revolt - an event that tainted the reputation of the modern mercenary in Africa - is described.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The Super-Afrikaners, originally published in 1978, scandalised a nation as it exposed the secret workings of the Broederbond. Out of print for over three decades, this edition with an introduction by Max du Preez is available for a new generation.  Formed in Johannesburg in 1918 by a group of young Afrikaners disillusioned by their role as dispossessed people in their own country, the first triumph of this remarkable organisation was the fact that it was largely responsible for welding together dissident factions within Afrikanerdom and thereby ensuring the accession of the National Party to power in 1948. This highly organised clique of Super-Afrikaners, by sophisticated political intrigue, waged a remarkable campaign to harness political, social and economic forces in South Africa to its cause and succeeded.  Political journalists Hans Strydom and Ivor Wilkins traced, at great personal risk, its development from the earliest days to the present. The book includes the most comprehensive list of Broeders ever published. Paperback, 616 pages. Published 2012

Soft cover. 175 pages. Some reports Afrikaans, some English. Very good condition. Under 1kg. 'Ordinary South Africans report on a meeting with the ANC. In July a group of young white South Africans embarked on a journey to Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, where they met with senior members of the ANC. The members of the tour group were from divergent political and professional backgrounds. Apart from a Nationalist there were supporters of the United Democratic Front, a physicist, a theologian, journalists, business people and politicians. In this book they report on their impressions. And it is exactly the diversity of opinions that makes the book so readable: from cynicism about the potential of liberated African countries to realise the expectations of their people to anger about the "deceit of apartheid".

In this engaging biography, Chris Ash recounts the life of this colonial statesman. He was an enigmatic man: when he died The Times estimated that his astonishing personal sway over his followers was equaled only by that of Parnell, the Irish patriot. During the fervor of the South African diamond rush Jameson established a small medical practice in Kimberley in ; it was here that he met and forged a lifelong friendship with Cecil John Rhodes. Jameson's thirst for adventure, coupled with Rhodes's dream of expanding the British Empire from the Cape to Cairo, led to the occupation of Mashonaland in , with Jameson having laid the groundwork in his political dealings with Lobengula, king of the Matabele. Subtitle: Life and Times of Winnie Mandela Author: Emma Gilbey  Publisher: Vintage () ISBN-10: ISBN-13:   Condition: As New Binding: Softcover Pages: 328 Dimensions: 19.8 x 12.8 x 2.3 cm +++ by Emma Gilbey +++ "Emma Gilbey's carefully researched and fluently written book charts Winnie's gradual rise from rural teacher's daughter in the Transkei to political prima donna in Soweto, and explains in readable form the complex backdrop to her sudden fall from grace. It is an honest attempt to determine how a fundamentally decent - albeit haughty, headstrong and ambitious - woman, became an apologist for some of the worst excesses of black South Africa's armed struggle. For those who want to understand why, this book should be required reading" - Daily Telegraph.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. It effortlessly combines the historical novel and the picaresque to create a portrait of South Africa's fledgling Jewish community, of the emergent nation and a range of endearing and infuriating eccentrics. It is among the most sweeping, audacious and lively novels every written about this country" - Professor Michael Titlestad University of the Witwatersrand.
