The OFSTED report on school history suggests that the current generation of A Level students have been poorly served by exam-based textbooks which spoon-feed students while failing to enthuse them or develop deeper understanding of History. The Schools History Project has risen to this challenge with a new series for the next generation. Enquiring History is SHP's fresh approach to Advanced Level History that aims: - To motivate and engage readers - To help readers think and gain independence as learners- To encourage enquiry, and deeper understanding of periods and the people of the past- To engage with current scholarship - To prepare A Level students for university.Key features of each Student book:- Clear compelling narrative - books are designed to be read cover to cover- Structured enquiries - that explore the core content and issues of each period- 'Insights' (Feature panels between enquiries) provide context, overview, and extension - Full colour illustrations throughout. The Russian RevolutionThis title examines Russian history from 1894-1924 - the stories, settings, characters and issues that make this such an extraordinarily important and popular topic. The enquiries have an obvious focus on causes but also on interpretations. Each new generation of historians has interpreted these events through their own lenses - their own time, place and political standpoint - making this topic one of the most powerful for understanding how history is written and how interpretations are formed.Web-based support includes- lesson planning tools and guidance for teachers available from the SHP website http://www.schoolshistoryproject.org.uk/Publishing/BooksSHP/Enquiring/RusRev/EHSRusRev.html- eBooks for whole class teaching or individual student reading available from eBook retailersView sample chapter here http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/SiteImages/51/51470c4a-7b8a-423e-85a3-ccd12c7c27ce.pdf Features Summary Think more deeply and work more independently at A level History through a carefully thought-out enquiry approach from SHP. Together with Nelson Mandela Square, the centre, with some 144,000 m2 of shopping space, is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere (behind Chadstone Shopping Centre). Much of Johannesburg's business tourism is centred on Sandton, which has a string of 5-star hotels. It was recently announced by Liberty Properties that Sandton City will receive a R1,77-billion upgrade. Liberty Properties chief executive Samuel Ogbu has envisaged the complex as South Africa's very own Wall Street "Africa is not for sissies, but we have a bold vision, which is to see the Sandton City precinct as our own Wall Street." The redevelopment will include the construction of a 60-storey office tower, a new hotel, new retail and office space and residential apartments. The 60-storey office tower will be the tallest building in Africa, replacing the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg CBD. The extension will stretch to 30 000 m2 and the total complex will have a gross lettable area of 158 000 m2. London-based RTKL Associates have been chosen to design the complex. Nelson Mandela Square, formerly known as Sandton Square, was renamed in March 2004, after the unveiling of a 6-metre bronze statue of the former South African president. Perhaps ironically, Liliesleaf Farm, where Nelson Mandela lived in the early 1960s and where many leading political activists were arrested in 1963 and tried as part of the now infamous Rivonia Trial, is just north of Nelson Mandela Square, close to the N1 Highway, off Rivonia Road. "Today [1989] the Afrikaners are embarked upon their final trek. It is a journey to the very core of South Africa's racial problem; a journey which will determine whether this singular and stubborn people can live side by side with their black fellow countrymen, whose political aspirations they have so far thwarted." For South Africa the year 1988 was one of politically charged anniversaries. It was 500 years since the Portuguese explorer, Bartholomeu Dias, became the first European to set foot on the southern tip of Africa. The ruling National Party marked 40 years in power, while President P.W. Botha celebrated ten years as the country's controversial leader. Most important of all was the 150th anniversary of the Great Trek, the heroic focal point in the history of the Afrikaners, the white tribe that dominates South Africa. The trek was undertaken by Afikaner or "Boer" fugitives from British colonial rule in the Cape. Dragging their ox-wagons over mountains and through swirling rivers, they made their way north to establish their own republics, suffering hardship and death on the way. The commemoration of the Great Trek was therefore a tumultuous event for the Afrikaners. But it was celebrated by a bitterly divided people. President Botha's cautious moves towards sharing power with people of colour have led to Afrikanerdom's most fundamental schism to date. Hardliners seeking a return to rigid apartheid have moved to the right. Liberal Afrikaners have gone in search of common ground with black nationalists. This leaves the National Party trying to hold the centre ground. Every level of Afrikaner society has been torn by the rifts. Given the Afrikaner's firm grip on power in South Africa and his determination to survive despite overwhelming opposition from the rest of the world, what happens within Afrikanerdom is of crucial importance to the country's future. The violent unrest in the black townships during the mid-1980s was crushed in a clear demonstration that the Afrikaners are not about to surrender control over their future. Today the Afrikaners are embarked upon their final trek. It is a journey to the very core of South Africa's racial problem; a journey which will determine whether this singular and stubborn people can live side by side with their black fellow countrymen, whose political aspirations they have so far thwarted.

In his latest book, political journalist Pieter du Toit explores the roots of Stellenbosch, and closely examines its ‘club’ of billionaires. Who are they and, crucially, how are they connected? What network of boardroom membership, alliances and family connections exists? Who are the ‘old guard’ and who are the ‘inkommers’, and what about the youngsters desperate to make their mark? City Press While claims that Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu got friendly with businessman Johann Rupert may be damaging, one analyst believes that the party will not take action against him. Instead of taking action, said Durban political analyst Thabani Khumalo, the party would handle the issue the same way it did with damaging allegations against senior EFF members over the VBS Bank scandal. IOL Du Toit also reveals how Shivambu, one of the most vociferous critics of white capital, is apparently far closer to Rupert than he would have the country believe. Shivambu, when approached on Saturday, did not directly deny the Tokara meeting to News24, but denied having a relationship with Rupert. news24 In 2006 the name of Steinhoff International started to appear on rugby jerseys in Stellenbosch. Before too long other companies found themselves pushed out, and Steinhoff was sponsoring rugby at the international level â€" even though that holding company had no direct exposure to consumers. For some, this seemed to be more about Steinhoff kingpin Markus Jooste's ego than business, writes Pieter du Toit in his new book. Business Insider SA This product ships within 3-5 working days.

Paperback. English. Penguin. 1989. In fair/used condition. Manor Farm is like any other English farm, expect for a drunken owner, Mr Jones, incompetent workers and oppressed animals. Fed up with the ignorance of their human masters, the animals rise up in rebellion and take over the farm. Led by intellectually superior pigs like Snowball and Napoleon, the animals how to take charge of their destiny and remove the inequities of their lives. But as time passes, the realize that things aren't happening quite as expected. Animal Farm is, one level, a simple story about barnyard animals. On a much deeper level, it is a savage political satire on corrupted ideals, misdirected revolutions and class conflict-themes as valid today as they were sixty years ago.

Already important players globally, by mid-century, they are likely to be economic powerhouses. But whether they reach that level of development will depend in part on how successfully they create quality higher education that puts their labor forces at the cutting edge of the information society. Using an empirical, comparative approach, this book develops a broad picture of the higher education system in each country in the context of both global and local forces. The authors offer insights into how differing socioeconomic and historic patterns of change and political contexts influence developments in higher education. In asking why each state takes the approach that it does, this work situates a discussion of university expansion and quality in the context of governments' educational policies and reflects on the larger struggles over social goals and the distribution of national resources. Japanese Family and Society: Words from Tongo Takebe, A Meiji Era Sociologist presents a carefully edited, accurate translation by Teruhito Sako of original work from the early Japanese sociologist Tongo Takebe. Factual storytelling: graphic illustrations expose the new tyranny of the 21st century Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the 21st century through a series of detailed nonfictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violencethey reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirrors the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe. The 21st century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and its stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. By bluntly showing the designs, Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties. In the United States, perhaps no one was more undone by the events of 1968 than President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Kyle Longley leads his readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of what Johnson characterized as the 'year of a continuous nightmare'. Longley explores how LBJ perceived the most significant events of 1968, including the Vietnam War, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert Kennedy, and the violent Democratic National Convention in Chicago. His responses to the crises were sometimes effective but often tragic, and LBJ's refusal to seek re-election underscores his recognition of the challenges facing the country in 1968. As much a biography of a single year as it is of LBJ, LBJ's 1968 vividly captures the tumult that dominated the headlines on a local and global level. Relying on the memories of the survivors of the worst catastrophe of Maoist rule and documenting the rise of resistance and protest at the grassroots level, this book explains how the terror, hunger, and loss of the socialist past influences the way in which people in the deep countryside see and resist state power in the reform era up to the present-day repression of the People's Republic of China central government. Ralph A. Thaxton, Jr provides us with a worm's-eye view of an 'unknown China' - a China that cannot easily or fully be understood through made-in-the-academy theories and frameworks of why and how rural people have engaged in contentious politics. This book is a truly unique and disturbing look at how rural people relate to an authoritarian political system in a country that aspires to become a stable world power. Features Summary The book is about how memories of Mao era suffering, particularly memories of suffering and loss in the Great Leap Forward Famine, have seeped into the present day post-Mao reform period to shape the way in which rural famine survivors see and resist state power and injustice today.
