D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy Humans are tribal. We need to belong to groups. Groups unite us, fostering a sense of belonging and taking care of some of our most basic needs. They have also, throughout history, divided us. Today the West - and particularly the United States - sees the world in terms of nation-states engaged in great ideological battles: democracy vs. authoritarianism, communism vs. capitalism, the 'free world' vs. the 'axis of evil'. Abroad, our inability to recognise ethnic, religious, sectarian and clan-based tribes has led to stunning oversights in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. This hasn't always been the case. During its imperial heyday, for instance, Britain exploited the power of group identities by practicing ruthlessly successful, acutely group-conscious divide-and-rule policies to its advantage. Now political correctness has seen group-blindness become the norm, leading to disasters at home and abroad. Pundits miscalled the US election and Brexit because they failed to pay heed to the deep significance of political tribes at home. They didn't understand, and even looked down on, what matters most to ordinary citizens: not equality, not democracy, not grand ideals, but belonging to a group. If we are to transcend our political tribes, we must rediscover a broader, more nuanced unity that acknowledges the reality of our group differences. Insightful, challenging and provocative, Political Tribes is Amy Chua at her best. When it comes to foreign visitors or artists, North Korea must be the most restrictive country in the world. Nevertheless, Carl De Keyzer managed to cross the entire country in 42 days, divided into three journeys. In his latest book, Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer points his lens at North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the last communist state in the world from an ideological, political and cultural perspective. De Keyzer is one of very few photographers who got almost-unlimited access to the country. He photographed more than 200 different locations, many of which had never been captured on camera before. The 250 photos that form his 'Grand Tour' - taken on marches, at the shooting range, in the subway and in family homes - are a testament to this country's uniqueness. After "Cuba: La Lucha" also by Carl De Keyzer, comes another unique book about another unique country. Features Summary With a "concertina" design, this book showcases the "grand tour" of Magnum Photographer Carl De Keyzer around North Korea, the most reclusive country in the world. This durable worldview has guided their political behavior from the founding to the present day. In The Foundations of American Jewish Liberalism, Kenneth D. Wald traces the development of this culture by examining the controversies and threats that stimulated political participation by American Jews. Wald shows that the American political environment, permeated by classic liberal values, produced a Jewish community that differs politically from non-Jews who resemble Jews socially and from Jewish communities abroad. Drawing on survey data and extensive archival research, the book examines the ups and downs of Jewish attachment to liberalism and the Democratic Party and the tensions between two distinct strains of liberalism. Features Summary American Jews have built a political culture based on the principle of equal citizenship in a secular state. Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling by Amy Chozick (Audiobook) Title: Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling Author: Amy Chozick Narrator: Amy Chozick Genre: Biography & Autobiography - Political Type: Audiobook Delivery method: Please refer to "Shipping & Payment" Description: For nearly a decade, Amy Chozick chronicled Hillary Clintonメs pursuit of the presidency. Chozickメs front-row seat, initially at the Wall Street Journal covering Mrs. Clintonメs imploding 2008 campaign, and then at the New York Times where she was assigned モThe Hillary Beatヤ, set off a years-long journey in which the formative years of her twenties and thirties became, both personally and professionally, intrinsically intertwined to Clintonメs presidential ambitions. As Mrs. Clinton tried, and twice failed, to shatter モthat highest hardest glass ceiling,ヤ Chozick was trying, with various fits and starts, to scale the highest echelons of American journalism. In a rollicking, hilarious, dishy narrative, Chozick takes us through the high- (and low-) lights of a wildly dramatic presidential race. But Chozickメs unique vantage point and candor lift the veil from the story we thought we all knew. Here is the real story of what happened, with the kind of inside detail that constantly surprises and enlightens. But Chasing Hillary is also the unusually personal and moving story of how Chozick came to understand Clinton not as an unknowable enigma and political animal, but as a complete, complex, person, full of contradictions and forged in the crucible of political battles that had long predated Chozickメs years covering her. And as Chozick gets engaged, married, buys an apartment, climbs the professional ladder, and inquires about freezing her eggs so she can have children after the 2016 campaign, she dives deeper into decisions Mrs. Clinton had made at similar points in her early career. In the process, Chozick develops an intimate understanding of what drives Clinton, how she accomplished what no woman had before, and why she ultimately failed. And the social fissures in the electorate that would drive angry voters to Donald Trump and blindside Hillary Clinton, unexpectedly bring out the tensions in Chozickメs own life-between the red state she came from and the blue state she ended up in, between her desire to climb in journalism as a woman, but be treated no differently than a man. Mrs. Clinton's shocking defeat would mark the end of the almost imperial hold she'd had on Chozick for most of her professional life. But the results also make Chozick question everything sheメd worked so hard for in the first place. Political journalism had failed. The elite world Chozick had tried for years to fit in with had been rebuffed. The less qualified, bombastic man had triumphed, as they always seemed to do, and Mrs. Clinton had retreated to the woods in Chappaqua, N.Y. finally comfortable enough to just walk, no makeup, no pants suit, showing the real person Chozick had spent years hoping to see. Illuminating, poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, Chasing Hillary is a campaign book like never before.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The late fourteenth century was the age of the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt, the Hundred Years War, the deposition of Richard II, the papal schism and the emergence of the heretical doctrines of John Wyclif and the Lollards. These social, political and religious crises and conflicts were addressed not only by preachers and by those involved in public affairs but also by poets, including Chaucer and Langland. Above all, though, it is in the verse of John Gower that we find the most direct engagement with contemporary events. Yet, surprisingly, few historians have examined Gower's responses to these events or have studied the broader moral and philosophical outlook which he used to make sense of them. Here, a number of eminent medievalists seek to demonstrate what historians can add to our understanding of Gower's poetry and his ideas about society (the nobility and chivalry, the peasants and the 1381 revolt, urban life and the law), the Church (the clergy, papacy, Lollardy, monasticism, and the friars) gender (masculinity and women and power), politics (political theory and the deposition of Richard II) and science and astronomy. The book also offers an important reassessment of Gower's biography based on newly-discovered primary sources. STEPHEN RIGBY is Emeritus Professor of Medieval Social and Economic History at the University of Manchester; SIAN ECHARD is Professor of English, University of British Columbia. A firsthand observer weighs the achievements-and failures-of two fabled American presidents As a young White House correspondent during the Kennedy and Johnson years in Washington, D.C., Godfrey Hodgson had a ringside seat covering the last two great presidents of the United States, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, two men who could not have been more different. Kennedy's wit and dashing style, his renown as a national war hero, and his Ivy League Boston Brahmin background stood in sharp contrast to Lyndon Johnson's rural, humble origins in Texas, his blunt, forceful (but effective) political style, his lackluster career in the navy, and his grassroots populist instincts. Hodgson, a sharp-eyed witness throughout the tenure of these two great men, now offers us a new perspective enriched by his reflections since that time a half-century ago. He offers us a fresh, dispassionate contrast of these two great men by stripping away the myths to assess their achievements, ultimately asking whether Johnson has been misjudged. He suggests that LBJ be given his due by history, arguing that he was as great a president as, perhaps even greater than, JFK. The seed that grew into this book was the author's early perception that JFK's performance in office was largely overrated while LBJ's was consistently underrated. Hodgson asks key questions: If Kennedy had lived, would he have matched Johnson's ambitious Great Society achievements? Would he have avoided Johnson's disastrous commitment in Vietnam? Would Nixon have been elected his successor, and if not, how would American politics and parties look today? Hodgson combines lively anecdotes with sober analyses to arrive at new conclusions about the U.S. presidency and two of the most charismatic figures ever to govern from the Oval Office. Book in good condition. Slight spots to edges and front page otherwise all good.     From Rhodesia to Mugabe's Zimbabwe SoftCover – 2009. Chronicles of a Game Ranger by Nick Tredger (Author) Nick Tredger, after an 18 month national service stint in the Rhodesian Army, joined the Dept of National Parks and Wildlife in 1978 as a cadet-ranger. His first station was the remote Chizarira National Park, where amongst the isolated rugged mountains and gorges, he and a handful of brave young rangers working in siege conditions, fought both for their country and for the preservation of the wilderness around them. Subsequently, he worked his way through the ranks in arguably the greatest wildlife refuges in the world - Wankie (Hwange) - then, after Zimbabwean independence: Zambezi Valley and finally as Warden of the breathtakingly beautiful Mana Pools National Park at the age of 24. In the uncertainty of post-election Zimbabwe, when democracy and law and order was fast receding, he suffered the loss of his best friend, brutally murdered by Mugabe's North Korean-trained 5th Brigade and endured adversity, political interference and the omnipresent threat of incarceration by the Mugabe regime. In 1984 he decided he'd had enough and resigned from the Department and moved to South Africa.  Ref A1
