What is it? Every few years, bonsai trees should be removed from their containers and the old growing medium replaced. As bonsai grow in very small containers with little growing medium, your choice of medium is important to ensure trees grow healthily for years. This General Soil Mix contains Mature Milled Pine Bark for adequate water retention. Coarse Crushed Silica Stone is added for drainage and to prevent compaction which may deprive the roots of life giving oxygen. Unlike fresh pine bark which some mixes contain, our mature bark will not consume Nitrogen, depriving the bonsai tree of growth. Good drainage reduces risk of root rot and ultimate demise of a tree. How to use? The mix is ready to be used right out of the bag in most cases. Should you require a drier, faster draining mix then add Leca. If you require more water retention then add more Peat Moss. Both components are part of our Bonsai range. Garden soil is too fine and should never be used in growing mixes. Bag Contents 50% Mature Milled Pine Bark 50% Crushed Silica Stone

What is it? Peat Moss is considered by some as the best organic growing medium for containerized plants known to mankind. Peat Moss is sterile, which is great when used in seedling mixes. However microbial life does thrive in it and it has the capacity to adsorb nutrients for future release. Despite its very light and open structure, it is water retentive but does not impede drainage in the root zone. How to use? Peat Moss may be used for indoor, balcony and container plants such as bonsai trees. Patented wetting agents within the Peat Moss, ensures quick absorption and distribution of irrigation water throughout the container. If using Peat Moss as an ingredient of a bonsai growing medium, ensure it is combined in a ratio of around 30/70 of Peat Moss to Leca for most trees. For species which prefer wetter roots or mature, highly developed bonsai where less vigorous growth is wanted, use higher ratios of Peat Moss for added moisture. Bag Contents 60% Black Peat Moss 40% Coarse White Spaghnum Peat Moss

What is it? Natural stone to be used as a decorative feature together with bonsai trees or container grown succulents. Particle sizes and colors are carefully selected for bonsai artists to complete the illusion of wild growing trees in a landscape. How to use? Spread a thin layer of gravel at the base of the bonsai tree or succulent. Watering should be done with a fine spray, gently to avoid washing the gravel away. Add more gravel as needed. These plastic labels are most useful to identify bonsai trees, cuttings, seedling or yamadori bonsai trees. You can use a permanent marker to record species name, planting dates and other important information which may otherwise get lost. To use, record the required information on your label and push the label in the soil in the bonsai pot. The plastic spike makes insertion into the growing medium very easy. The labels are manufactured from plastic which will withstand the strong sun and its UV rays, here in South Africa.  Size 85mm in total height, including spike Pack size 6pc Material Plastic Origin Japan

Description For over a century, Japanese bonsai artists have used an organic fertilizer to provide the nutrients needed to keep their trees in perfect health year round. BonsaiBoost is locally produced from high quality, pure canola meal, the same ingredient still used in Japan today. BonsaiBoost should be used on any bonsai or potted plant, from collected stock through to exhibition trees and on flowering, fruiting or evergreen trees. Easy to use with no mixing required, BonsaiBoost sachets are laid on the surface around the bonsai and watered as normal. At each watering, a little of the nutrients in the sachet is carried to the roots. Sachets can be replaced every 2 months during the growing season. Features Time saver - every time you water you are fertilizing at the same time. Organic fertilizer which cannot burn your trees. Sustained, slow release of nutrients to your trees. Promotes healthy, strong growth. Easy to use and will not harm pets if accidentally ingested. The above claims are guaranteed. If you are not 100% satisfied we will refund you in full. Easy to use BonsaiBoost is packaged in high quality coffee filter bags to ensure water penetrates easily but without allowing the ground fertilizer to disappear into the soil mix. To use simply place the BonsaiBoost bag onto the soil and secure in place with wire or a toothpick. For shohin (small trees below 30cm) you should use about 1 bag. Medium sized trees can take 2 bags and larger trees as required. For maintenance of developed trees you will not need as much fertilizer as trees which are still being developed. Replace the bags roughly every 2 months. When you first start using them they will omit an odour. This odour diminishes with time till eventually no smell is experienced. The ground canola cake will become a solid lump, this is normal. While using BonsaiBoost little additional fertilizer is needed. For many years, Japanese bonsai professionals have been using exclusively these cakes to fertilize their trees. However for flowering plants you may want to use a fertilizer specifically aimed at promoting flowering. A seaweed extract may also be a good idea to use once in a while. BonsaiBoost is the ideal fertilizer when using open growing mediums such as our Professional Bonsai Growing Medium. 100% Biodegradable After using the bag for your preferred length of time don't simply throw it away. You can do the following: Make a small hole in your garden soil and bury the bag, it will completely degrade and add to the nutrients there too. Use it around your overpotted trees which are still undergoing development. Fertilize your field growing trees. Place into pot plant containers. How many trees can I feed? 20 Shohin trees for 2 months 10 Medium trees for 2 months 7 or 8 Large bonsai trees for 2 months Contents Macro elements: 53 N g/kg 12 P g/kg 14 K g/kg Micro elements: 7.9 Ca g/kg 0.62 Mg mg/kg 62 Mn mg/kg 195 Fe mg/kg 5 Cu mg/kg 58 Zn mg/kg 40 B mg/kg If you would like to add a slow release organic fertilizer to your growing mix when you repot, then you may wish to consider our Milled Seaweed. Features Particle size = 1 ~ 3mm Growing medium of Japanese bonsai masters High quality Ibaraki brand akadama Hard type (retains shape longest) Exclusively imported from Japan by Bonsai Tree. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 14L bags. Description Akadama is a granular volcanic clay-like (although it is not clay) mineral which occurs naturally in Japan. It has been extensively used by Japanese gardeners and bonsai artists for many centuries as a growing medium for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. It is mined from the surface of the ground, after which it is graded and packaged. Unlike LECA it is not fired at high temperatures however when it is mined from greater depths it tends to be harder or it might be slightly baked. It has many unique qualities, one of which is that when it is wet it has a darker colour so indicates when watering is needed. Akadama is unique as a growing medium and is sought after due to its ability for water retention and nutrients due to its high CEC value. However at the same time it provides porosity and free drainage. Uses This fine (1~3mm) particle size akadama is suited to shohin and general bonsai growing mixes as a top dressing to encourage fine surface rooting. Akadama can be combined with other elements such as crushed stone, composted bark, peat, or for best effect use pumice. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Bjorn Bjorholm Akadama, lava rock, and pumice. Use a 1:1:1 ratio respectively for conifers and a 2:1:1 ratio respectively for deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species. About this pot The ceramics produced at the Seizan kiln by Reihou are classic. The shapes and proportions are very functional for most any tree, so not only can they be appreciated for the works of art that they are, but your favourite tree will be that much impressive potted in one of these containers. The glaze colours which are used are subdued and once again very complimentary to all species of bonsai trees. This particular rounded rectangular bonsai pot in kin (pale blue) glaze with bamboo relief right round, is a used pot with no damage in the form of cracks or chips. A nice patina has already begun to develop on this container which will enhance the age of any maturing bonsai tree.  Origin Japan Artist Reihou, Mr. Katsushi Kataoka (Master potter) Dimensions 35 x 25 x 8.5cm Finish Glazed

This is a very solid and useful combination tool from Kaneshin in Japan. Rakes are very useful tools especially when you are repotting your bonsai trees and need to rake out the roots. This is a very important step during repotting as you then need to use a pair of suitable scissors or root cutter to shorten the roots which developed since you last repotted your tree. Failing to do so will result in your tree becoming progressively weaker. This rake has 2 durable prongs which will minimize breakages in the root ball when you comb it out. The spatula is useful when you wish to tamp down newly applied growing media after repotting your tree. It is also very nice to use when applying new pieces of moss, to compact it onto the surface. The grip of the stainless steel version is very comfortable and the tool feels solid in the hand. Made from corrosion resistant material this tool will last for many years. Size 250mm Material Stainless Steel Origin Japan

Prunus serrulata  Bonsai Seeds Prunus serrulata or Japanese Flowering Cherry is a species of cherry, native to Japan, Korea and China. It is a small deciduous tree with a short single trunk and dense crown reaching a height of about 4.5m to 7.5m. The leaves are arranged alternately, simple, ovate to lanceolate, 5 inches long with a short petiole and a serrate or doubly serrate margin. At the end of autumn, the green leaves turn yellow, red or crimson. The flowers are produced in racemose clusters of two to five together at nodes on short spurs in spring at the same time as the new leaves appear. Flowers come in single, semi-double or double form and may be fragrant or non-fragrant. The fruit is a globose black pea-sized drupe appearing in late summer. The Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree, which only blooms for a very short time in the spring, is sometimes called Sakura ("tree on which god sits") and symbolizes spring, life and beauty. The Japanese consider these trees very special. The cherry blossom came to Japan when a Japanese goddess named Konohanasakuyahime planted one atop Mt. Fuji. In 1912, Tokyo gave many such trees as a gift to the United States. We can find many of these trees around the Jefferson memorial in Washington D.C., where an annual Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year since 1935. After World War II, many of the trees in Japan began to die so we donated pieces of our trees to help save the population in Japan. On offer is a pack of 5 Seeds

Pinus thunbergii  Bonsai Seeds Pinus is a genus of approximately 120 species of monoecious, evergreen, coniferous trees or shrubs, widely distributed throughout the world particularly occurring in mountainous and arid conditions where they are able to thrive. Pines are a classic bonsai species in Japan and the world over, they are not however, easy trees to care for and style without experience. Pines have their own growth patterns that differ greatly from deciduous and common coniferous species; these growth patterns need to be understood before successful styling and pruning can be carried out. As can be seen in the accompanying pictures; pines are not only used for bonsai in Japan, they are also very often seen cloud-pruned in Japanese gardens. Pinus thunbergii is a native of Japan and is arguably the classic bonsai pine species. The Black Pine is a very vigorous tree commonly grown Japan in parks and ornamental gardens where heights of anything up to 25metres are commonly reached. Black Pines are very tolerant of poor conditions, surviving in nature on barren, stony soils. Pinus thunbergii has thick, dark grey-green needles up to 7-15cm long, though quite long, the needle-size can be reduced in length with the use of bonsai pruning techniques. Bark is purplish-grey and becomes very craggy and fissured with age. White pines are frequently grafted onto the more vigorous Black pine, Pinus thunbergii, rootstock to improve vigour and growth-rate. On offer is a pack of 10 Seeds

Platanus occidentalis Bonsai Seeds Common Names: American sycamore Tree, American Plane Tree or Buttonwood Tree Seeds An American sycamore tree is easily recognized by its mottled exfoliating bark. The bark of all trees has to yield to a growing trunk; in the case of trees such as the Silver Maple and the Shagbark Hickory the process is not hidden, but the Sycamore shows the process of exfoliation more openly than any other tree. The bark of the trunk and larger limbs flakes off in great irregular masses, leaving the surface mottled, and greenish-white, gray and brown. Sometimes the smaller limbs look as if whitewashed. The explanation is found in the rigid texture of the bark tissue, which lacks the elasticity common to the bark of other trees, so it is incapable of stretching to accommodate the growth of the wood underneath and the tree sloughs it off. A sycamore can grow to massive proportions, typically reaching up to 30 to 40 meters high and 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter when grown in deep soils. The largest of the species have been measured to 51 meters, and nearly 4 meters in diameter. Historical specimens over 5 meters thick have been reported. The sycamore is able to endure a big city environment and has been extensively planted as a shade tree. It bears transplanting well and grows rapidly. The bid amount is for 1 Seed We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions plus a FREE e-book with everything you'll ever need to know about the art of bonsai.
