In places the palimpsest is so heavily worked that the letters feel like braille. I like to keep my body rolled away from prying eyes, never unfold too much, tell the whole story. I didn't know that Louise would have reading hands. She has translated me into her own book.

Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa - Nicki von der Heyde - Struik - 2014 - Paperback in good condition. There are two major types of battlefield terrain in South Africa: first the open plains and savannah lands of the Highveld, a land where cavalry rules supreme. The second type is the thornbush of the Eastern Cape, a setting more suited to skirmishing rather than set-piece battles. Then, in KwaZulu-Natal, the two terrains merge to create the country s most dramatic battlefield landscape and one of the largest military graveyards in the world where the fates of colonies, republics and kingdoms were decided. For more than two centuries, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, conflict, in one form or another, swept across this countryside; its combatants as diverse, hardy and tenacious as the land and its resources that almost always was at the root of hostilities. In this groundbreaking book, author and specialist battlefields guide, Nicki von der Heyde, presents over 70 battles and skirmishes covering five wars that shaped the course of South African history from the Frontier Wars that started in 1779 to the Second-Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902, a bitter and costly confrontation triggered by the discovery of the world s richest gold fields on the Witwatersrand.Detailed accounts of the engagements, based on extensive research, are provided, with special attention given to the terrain, key phases and outcomes, and the combatants involved. Battle timelines succinctly set out the passage of each campaign, while international timelines catalogue concurrent events around the world.More than 400 original documentary and contemporary photographs and over 60 short features have been assembled to provide a rich, enthralling and haunting account of these momentous events. Detailed historical maps that include annotations have been created for 16 high-profile engagements, while 10 regional maps indicate the locations of the battle sites. Arranged in regional order, with concise directions to each battle site and GPS coordinates for main locations, the "Field Guide to South Africa s Battlefields" is not only indispensable for professional and amateur military historians, but is of great interest to general readers, too if only as a reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the value of exploring the past to make sense of the present. It is beautifully illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and detailed battle and regional maps."

From Playgrounds to Battlefields - Piet van der Byl - Howard Timmins - 1971 - Hard cover with dust cover still in good condition. This is the first part of a two-part autobiography and deals with the author's early years. Major van der Byl is one of the few South Africans who have won a rowing Blue at Cambridge University. He served with distinction in World War I with General Botha in South West Africa and with General Smuts in the East African campaign. Major van der Byl has had a full and interesting life and his autobiography is rich in anecdotes. He has a gift for analysis of human nature and his memories of Generals Smuts and Botha are often as moving as they are historically valuable. His description of the South West Africa campaign is also excellent.".

Often referred to as a workhorse the PzKpfw IV is certainly not a glamorous beast but from North Africa to the Eastern front it was a ubiquitous fixture on the various battlefields of WWII. Using archive and original photographs to lay down a visual time line for this Panzer's development, the book takes a historical overview of this strategically important tank. Description and definition of all the different Ausfs are included both within the introduction and captions. It applies recent findings to the analysis and commentary of the photographs. These include the authors own research into unit specific stowage and factory production differences, which feature for the first time within the context of a monograph looking at the vehicles overall evolution. Information that should be invaluable to both historians and modelers. Editorial Reviews Review "Peko Publishing have added yet another top shelf selection of reference material for modelers and armor enthusiasts alike. The quality and assortment of photographs used in this volume is only second to the informative captions accompanying each selection. This book is a great reference for modelers looking to accurize their next Panzer IV build while getting ideas for that next diorama. This volume will certainly not disappoint and is a 'must have' in any armor enthusiasts' reference library. " (Boresight, AMPS jourmal) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition. A magisterial, single-volume history of the greatest conflict the world has ever known by our foremost military historian. The Second World War began in August 1939 on the edge of Manchuria and ended there exactly six years later with the Soviet invasion of northern China. The war in Europe appeared completely divorced from the war in the Pacific and China, and yet events on opposite sides of the world had profound effects. Using the most up-to-date scholarship and research, and writing with clarity and compassion, Beevor assembles the whole picture in a gripping narrative that extends from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, from the snowbound steppe to the North African Desert, to the Burmese jungle, SS Einsatzgruppen in the borderlands, Gulag prisoners drafted into punishment battalions, and to the unspeakable cruelties of the Sino-Japanese War. Moral choice forms the basis of all human drama, and no other period in history has presented greater dilemmas both for leaders and ordinary people, nor offered such examples of individual and mass tragedy, the corruption of power politics, ideological hypocrisy, the egomania of commanders, betrayal, perversity, self-sacrifice, unbelievable sadism and unpredictable kindness. Although filling the broadest canvas on a heroic scale, Beevor's THE SECOND WORLD WAR never loses sight of the fate of the ordinary soldiers and civilians whose lives were crushed by the titanic forces unleashed in this, the most terrible war in history. A beautifully produced hardback edition with embossed jacket, 53 black and white photographs and 25 maps. Hardcover. English. Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 2012. In good condition.

It's a visual tour de force - complete with high drama, raw tragedy, sound effects and stunning costumes. Scripted by Nature and choreographed by the weather, hunger and sheer chance, it's the spectacular world of southern African wildlife. The variety of the landscape, the extremes of climate, and the huge diversity of vegetation create ideal conditions for a fraternity of wild animals unequalled anywhere else on Earth. More than 900 species of birds cohabit freely with 338 mammal species, a diverse population of reptiles and amphibians, and an inestimable number of insects. In South Africa alone, nearly six million hectares of land are devoted to conservation. There is a growing awareness of the importance of wildlife heritage, and the necessity for its continued survival, in spite of industrial development and the encroachment of man. Fuelling this awareness is the commitment of a group of dedicated photographers who spend days, months and years in the wild pursuing a dream: to capture on film the extraordinary lives of animals in a way that's never been done before.
