In this companion volume to the highly successful Field Guide to the Battlefields of South Africa, the pivotal sieges that characterised the Cape Frontier, Anglo-Zulu, Basotho and Anglo-Boer wars are brought together in one volume. Accounts of 17 sieges over the last two centuries explore in detail the historical context in which they occurred, the day-to-day military actions that sustained the investments and the conditions both soldiers and civilians faced while defending their territory against a hostile force. The siege descriptions are animated by maps, timelines and a variety of information boxes and human-interest stories, gleaned mainly from diaries, letters and eye-witness accounts, while long-form features focus on the practical aspects of siege warfare, such as artillery, medicine, food, and the psychological effects of besiegement. The book also provides practical information for visitors who wish to explore these historical sites. A fascinating read that will appeal to anyone interested in the volatile history of the country armchair historians and travellers alike. Softcover, 224 pages

REALLY INSIDE BOSS: A Tale of South Africas late Intelligence Service (And Something about the CIA) PC Swanepoel Authors Foreword: This book was initially conceived of as nothing else but a commentary on James Sanders' APARTHEIDS FRIENDS THE RISE AND FALL OF SOUTH AFRICA'S SECRET SERVICE which appeared in 2006. Its name was suggested by INSIDE BOSS, a book written 25 years earlier and copiously made use of by Sanders. For one reason or another commentary seemed to end up as something else. I felt called upon to undertake this task. Having served in the National Intelligence Service and its predecessors for more than 34 years, my colleagues and I never considered ourselves "Apartheid's Friends". Most of us were opposed to "petty apartheid". We tried to be apolitical and objective. It is true that I saw merit in what came to be called "grand apartheid", the ideal of a Federation of Southern African States,  in which my own people, the Afrikaners, would control their own (albeit a small) portion or portions of the country. I even propounded, in print in 1965, the creation of a homeland for whites. Later I was to replace "whites with "Afrikaners defined as "Afrikaans speaking people, irrespective of their race, colour or creed". (This switch to a more inclusive world-view occurred before I discovered that I was a descendant of Eva Krokoa, the Khoekoen (or Hottentot) girl, who grew up, (circa 1655) in Jan Van Riebeeck's house in Cape Town!) In a sense this book also sets out to highlight the role played covertly against the previous South African government by Western, as against communist forces.  Curiously enough, there appears to be reluctance on the part of British and American commentators to deal with this issue. The book is not a literary work. English is not the writer's first language. The reason why it was written in English was to enable the James Sanders of this world to read it. Numerous and often lengthy verbatim quotations are included. The sources are identified in the script and not in footnotes Pretoria, May, 2007.

Peter Gibbs was born in London in 1903, educated at Aldenham, and lived in Bulawayo since 1936. A number of his books have been published in London and New York. He served in the BSA Police Reserve for 21 years, retiring with the rank of reserve superintendent. He was awarded the MBE in 1964. He is deceased. Hugh Phillips was born in the UK and immigrated to Southern Rhodesia in 1951 to join the BSAP. He attained the rank of assistant commissioner prior to his retirement after nearly 30 years' service. Prior to returning to the UK in 2002, he was involved, without success, in liaison activities between the Commercial Farmers Union and Zimbabwean government in efforts to bring a more pragmatic outlook and policy towards the white farm invasions. Hugh wrote Part 3 of this history, covering the period from 1939 to 1980. Nick Russell joined the BSAP as a cadet in 1975 and served at Sinoia and Kariba before attending Morris Depot where he formed part of the mounted squad for the opening of parliament. After graduation he was posted to uniform-branch duties at Mount Darwin and substations in the district. He transferred to Special Branch and spent two years, mostly in the Mt Darwin area, until the cessation of hostilities. He now lives in Australia. The BSAP held the honour of occupying the Right of the Line-one of the greatest police forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth In 1889 Cecil John Rhodes was granted a royal charter by Queen Victoria to settle Mashonaland, in what was to become Southern Rhodesia. So was formed the British South Africa Company; its regiment of troopers raised to protect the occupying Pioneer Column dubbed the British South Africa Police, the BSAP. From the 1893 Matabele War, the 1896 Mashona Rebellion and the Jameson Raid, the Anglo-Boer War, through both world wars and finally to the bitter Rhodesian bush war of the 1960s and '70s, troopers and officers of this fine regiment of policemen, both black and white, were proudly to the fore, in civilian and military roles... until the disbandment of the Force in 1980 when the country became the independent Zimbabwe.
