In good condition with fair dw.Published in the early 19th century, James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans is a fictionalized adventure taking place during the French-American War. The daughters of an American colonel become caught up in the conflict between the two nations' contest for supremacy in North America, and embroiled in the war between the Native American allies of the two sides. Cooper's trademark intricacy of description and his portrayal of life during this tumultuous era have made The Last of the Mohicans one of the world's most widely read American novels.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days This special hardback edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of first publication with a brand-new foreword and introduction, and includes the complete text of the previously unavailable Men-of-War, O'Brian's fascinating guide to the world of Aubrey/Maturin. Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O'Brian's now famous Aubrey/Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written. It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship's surgeon and an intelligence agent. It contains all the action and excitement which could possibly be hoped for in a historical novel, but it also displays the qualities which have put O'Brian far ahead of any of his competitors: his depiction of the detail of life aboard a Nelsonic man-of-war, of weapons, food, conversation and ambience, of the landscape and of the sea. O'Brian's portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. His power of characterisation is above all masterly. This brilliant historical novel marked the debut of a writer who has grown into one of the most remarkable literary novelists now writing, the author of what Alan Judd, writing in the Sunday Times, has described as `the most significant extended story since Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time'. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days The latest in a new series of classic detective stories from the vaults of HarperCollins is a reissue of one of literature's most audacious and thought-provoking novels of murder and intrigue, in hardback with its 1929 cover design and a brand new introduction. London lawyer Gabriel John Utterson is persuaded to investigate the sinister activities of the dastardly Mr Edward Hyde. He becomes convinced that Hyde is blackmailing his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and that a master criminal is at work. To his horror, Utterson discovers that the doctor's own researches into the duality of human nature have unleashed a murderous sociopath and set in motion a deadly chain of events that threatens to overwhelm him. Published in January 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's crime fantasy was an immediate success, inspiring more than 100 stage and film adaptations and becoming one of the best-known stories ever written. It was reissued in the Detective Story Club in 1929 for being 'without equal in the realm of detective fiction'. This Detective Story Club classic is introduced by supernatural and detective fiction researcher Richard Dalby. It includes Stevenson's macabre tales 'Markheim' and 'The Body Snatcher', plus two of the earliest published Jekyll and Hyde parodies - the detective story 'Dr Jekyl' by Robert McLaughlin (1931) and a bizarre 'Untold Sequel' by Francis Little (1890). "The Detective Story Club", launched by Collins in 1929, was a clearing house for the best and most ingenious crime stories of the age, chosen by a select committee of experts. Now, almost 90 years later, these books are the classics of the Golden Age, republished at last with the same popular cover designs that appealed to their original readers. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of Doyle's best-known Holmes novels, frequently adapted for film and television, which is not surprising given the highly dramatic scenes of mist-wrapped moors echoing to the horrific howls of a supernatural hound. Is this a genuinely devilish apparition or is there a cunning murderer at work? Only Sherlock Holmes can solve the mystery. This volume also contains The Valley of Fear, a dark, powerful tale in which Holmes confronts the evil Professor Moriarty once more. With an Afterword by David Stuart Davies, a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund, and an authority on Sherlock Holmes. He has written the Afterwords for all the Collector's Library Holmes volumes. About this Item: London, Michael Joseph, 1958, 1958. First Edition. The rare and collectible true first edition, all the more rare in a colourful very good dust jacket. Book is very good: gilt on spine is bright and there is minor rubbing to the front board. Neat name on front free endpaper of Jeanne Sassoon, who was prominent in left wing circles in Cape Town. Leaves are otherwise clean apart from very minor foxing on endpapers and top edge. Dust jacket is very good. Not price clipped. A tightly closed tear on front at bottom and minor edgewear. Back is a little rubbed. Colourful fifties design by William Belcher. The third in the series of five Martha Quest novels. It is clearly based on her own failed marriage to Gottfried Lessing and deals with the failure of a Communist group in Central Africa during the early forties. The fifth book in the Marth Quest Children of Violence series, the Four-Gated City, is acknowledged by some as the finest book written by this Nobel Prize-winning author. Africana. Hardback. With dj.
