AFRICA@WAR SERIES: VOLUME 34 War of Intervention in Angola - Volume 2: Angolan and Cuban Forces at War, 1976-1983  - Adrien Fontanellaz  As of mid-1976, the civil war in Angola was seemingly decided: supported by a large contingent of Cuban forces, the MPLA established itself in power in Luanda. Its native competitors, the US-French-Zaire-supported FNLA, and UNITA, supported by China and South Africa, were in tatters. The French and Zaire-supported FLEC an armed movement for the independence of the oil-rich Cabinda enclave was in disarray. The last few of their surviving units were either driven out of the country, or forced into hiding in isolated corners of northern and south-eastern Angola. Nevertheless, the war went on. The MPLAs government failed to decisively defeat UNITA, in southern Angola, and then found itself facing a coup attempt from within in May 1977. Crushed in blood, this resulted in thousands being jailed and tortured: many more escaped abroad, where they reinforced the ranks of the battered opposition. The coup prompted the Soviets to attempt increasing their influence with the aim of establishing permanent military bases in the country. While all such overtures were turned down, Angolan operations along the border to what was then the South-West Africa (subsequently Namibia) in October 1980, combined with the increased activity of SWAPO an insurgency against the South African control of that territory - subsequently Namibia prompted South Africa to launch another military intervention and resume supporting UNITA. In turn, this prompted not only the Cubans to further increase their military presence, but also the Soviet Union into delivering massive amounts of military aid to the government in Luanda. Angola not only assumed the role of one of the major hot battlefields in the Cold War: its civil war saw a number of major showdowns between diverse belligerents, culminating in the Battle of Cangamba in 1983. Based on extensive research, with help of Angolan and Cuban sources, the War of Intervention in Angola, Volume 2, traces the military build-up of the Cuban and Soviet-supported Angolan military, the FAPLA and its combat operations, and those of the Cuban military in Angola, in the period 1976-1983, their capabilities and intentions, and their battlefield performances. The volume is illustrated with over 100 rare photographs, half a dozen maps and 18 colour profiles. Paperback, 80 pages.

Interest in KwaZulu-Natals battlefields especially those of the Anglo-Zulu War has soared since the film Zulu first screened in 1964, followed by Zulu Dawn in 1979 (the centenary of the Anglo-Zulu War). During the centenary, the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift were made tourist-friendly by the then Natal Provincial Administration and controls were put in place by the heritage authorities to prevent relics from being plundered. Supported by effective marketing from the Battlefield Route Association and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tourism Authority, the battlefields have become a must-see. Indeed, Rorkes Drift has become a tourist icon. Specialist battlefield guides have been trained and are considered to be among the best in the world.   Rare Boer War/Zulu War Brass Field Tourniquet I came across this amazing find privately many years ago, it was supposedly picked up on one of the battlefields. I haven’t cleaned or polished it because I think it’s important to keep it as it was found. Due to its age, the belt must have rotted away but the device still turns. There is even less written about those who participated on the margins of the war, especially those who were physically removed from the battlefields through capture by enemy forces. South Africa’s prisoners of war during World War II, their experiences and recollections, are largely forgotten. That is until now.  Historian Karen Horn painstakingly tracked down a number of former POW's. Together with written memoirs and archival documents, their interviews reveal rich narratives of hardship, endurance, humour, longing and self-discovery. Instead of fighting, these men adapted to another war, one which was fought on the inside of many prison camps. It was a war against hunger and deprivation, at times against ever-encroaching despondency and low morale amongst their companions in captivity.  In their interviews, all the POW's expressed surprise at being asked to share their experiences. The author found it astonishing that almost all of them claimed not to be heroes of any kind. This is not surprising when one considers that they returned to a country which soon tried its utmost to promote national amnesia with regard to the country’s participation in the war. With great insight and empathy, Karen Horn shines a light on a neglected corner of South African history.  The Author Karen Horn is a lecturer at Stellenbosch University. The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock relating to The Zulu War of 1879. "Editor's note.'John North Crealock, soldier-artist, was Lord Chelmsford's military secretary during the operations in the Eastern Cape and during the Zulu War of 1879. Crealock rode with his artist's materials in his saddle-bag and he recorded, as occasion offered, landscapes, camp sights and scenes, battlefields and military and civil personalities. Ten of the drawings sent to London with all speed possible in the days when Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift were stop-press stories, were reproduced in the Illustrated London News. Crealock's drawings are of pleasing artistic quality. Militarily, they date from an age when a substantial military force with "modern" firearms, fighting bravely to the last man, could still be overwhelmed by superior numbers fighting with equal bravery, but armed, for the most part, only with missile or stabbing assegais. But the drawings are not only of military interest, Their excellent detail has been praised by botanists, geographers and historians who recognise in them an authentic pictorial record of the Eastern Cape and Natal more than a hundred years ago. On his return to England after the Zulu War, Crealock preserved 189 of these drawings in an album which was left on his death, in the care of his regiment, the 95th Foot. The present album contains 67 of the drawings selected from those made in Natal and Zululand during the Zulu War."
