Interest in KwaZulu-Natals battlefields especially those of the Anglo-Zulu War has soared since the film Zulu first screened in 1964, followed by Zulu Dawn in 1979 (the centenary of the Anglo-Zulu War). During the centenary, the famous battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift were made tourist-friendly by the then Natal Provincial Administration and controls were put in place by the heritage authorities to prevent relics from being plundered. Supported by effective marketing from the Battlefield Route Association and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tourism Authority, the battlefields have become a must-see. Indeed, Rorkes Drift has become a tourist icon. Specialist battlefield guides have been trained and are considered to be among the best in the world. New hotels and lodges have been built with battlefield tourism resulting in the creation of an estimated 7,500 permanent jobs in what is termed the Battlefield Region.  There are, of course, many more Anglo-Zulu War sites to be seen: Discovering the Battlefields will enable visitors to find them and to read an account that is not too lengthy yet has sufficient content to bring it to life. GPS co-ordinates will enable those wishing to undertake a journey of exploration. The book is also a useful training manual for prospective battlefield guides. Above all, however, the author shares his knowledge gleaned from over 50 years of researching the Anglo-Zulu War. He has blended first-hand accounts passed on from participants on both sides to subsequent generations with official or newly-researched information that has become available in recent years. It is written in a style that is neither technical nor dramatic, is extensively illustrated with photographs of personalities and places and includes comprehensive maps of all the battle sites. Paperback, 256 pages with illustrations & maps Published November 2013

Rare Boer War/Zulu War Brass Field Tourniquet I came across this amazing find privately many years ago, it was supposedly picked up on one of the battlefields. I haven’t cleaned or polished it because I think it’s important to keep it as it was found. Due to its age, the belt must have rotted away but the device still turns. It is stamped on the top ‘SAVIGNY & CO. LONDON’. For some interesting information on the field tourniquet click on the link below. https://ageofrevolution.org/surgeons-blade-field-tourniquet/ If outside South Africa please contact me regarding payment and postage before bidding. Please email any queries. If you think the description in my listing is incorrect, please email me. The photograph you are viewing in this listing is the actual item for sale. Brown (R. A. - Editor). The Road To Ulundi: The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock. Pietermaritzburg: University of Natal Press, 1969. Limited edition of 1000 of which this is No. 100. The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock relating to The Zulu War of 1879. "Editor's note.'John North Crealock, soldier-artist, was Lord Chelmsford's military secretary during the operations in the Eastern Cape and during the Zulu War of 1879. Crealock rode with his artist's materials in his saddle-bag and he recorded, as occasion offered, landscapes, camp sights and scenes, battlefields and military and civil personalities. Ten of the drawings sent to London with all speed possible in the days when Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift were stop-press stories, were reproduced in the Illustrated London News. Crealock's drawings are of pleasing artistic quality. Militarily, they date from an age when a substantial military force with "modern" firearms, fighting bravely to the last man, could still be overwhelmed by superior numbers fighting with equal bravery, but armed, for the most part, only with missile or stabbing assegais. But the drawings are not only of military interest, Their excellent detail has been praised by botanists, geographers and historians who recognise in them an authentic pictorial record of the Eastern Cape and Natal more than a hundred years ago. On his return to England after the Zulu War, Crealock preserved 189 of these drawings in an album which was left on his death, in the care of his regiment, the 95th Foot. The present album contains 67 of the drawings selected from those made in Natal and Zululand during the Zulu War." Unpaginated (8 pp text + 36 pp ills), frontis portrait of the artist, map, 66 colour and black + white drawings. 440x240mm Tall. Very Good. Dw edges are a bit tatty. Some light foxing present. Hardcover. (##3213)

49.5 ha FARM CONTAINING TILLITE FOR SALE IN NEWARK, KWAZULU NATAL Tillite is a blue-grey rock used in construction of buildings and roads. Newark and is located in iLembe District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The property market on the KZN north coast is set to receive a major shot in the arm over the next few years courtesy of the Dube Trade Port and King Shaka International Airport at La Mercy, situated between Ballito and Umhlanga Rocks. It is estimated that these projects will create in excess of jobs over the next 25 years and the spin-offs are already being felt in surrounding areas with increased demand for goods, services and accommodation for workers driving property prices up. Construction material will certainly be needed. Other than mining the farm can be used for cattle or pig farming. The Local Municipality is strategically located midway between Durban and Richards Bay, and lies on the development corridor on the NorthCoast between these two major port cities in KwaZulu-Natal. It is located on the major railway and road transportation routes which link these two economic hubs in KwaZulu-Natal. This strategic location is also acknowledged in the Provincial Spatial Framework which has identified Mandeni as the growth node in the north coast corridor. The construction of the new Dube Trade Port and King Shaka International Airport has much economic, social and employment implications for the municipality because of its location.
