Subtitle: Leading Millions into the Abyss  Author: Laurence Rees  Publisher: Ebury Press () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: As New Binding: Softcover Pages: 470 Dimensions: 19.9 X 12.5 X 3.2 cm +++ by Laurence Rees +++ Adolf Hitler was an unlikely leader - fuelled by hate, incapable of forming normal human relationships, unwilling to debate political issues - and yet he commanded enormous support. So how was it possible that Hitler became such an attractive figure to millions of people? That is the important question at the core of Laurence Rees' new book. He examines the nature of Hitler's appeal, and reveals the role Hitler's supposed 'charisma' played in his success.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lieutenant Aldo Raine (aka Aldo 'the Apache', Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible, or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal, Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as 'The Basterds', which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz (aka 'The Bear Jew', Eli Roth) and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) goes awry, they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of 'The Nation's Pride', a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), at a modest theatre owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere, they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna, too, longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees, and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theatre in the process.  Rare pair of 1910 King George V Opening of Parliament 2 and a half penny - used telegraphically - with CANCELLED hole perforation defacer - A and N of CANCELLED clearly visible especially at rear of stamp. These telegraphic perforations are found onTransvaal and Union King's Heads but are rare on the Opening of Parliament stamp. These stamps should have been destroyed after storage of telegrams but some have survived as they were clandestinely sold to dealers. This pair comes from the stock of an Austrian stamp dealer Adolf Brehovsky (Leopold Traub). If anyone is interested in telegraphic stamps and cancellations, please let me know as I'd love to grow the interest in these rare stamps. If you are interested in learning more about the perforation holes / defacer have a look at Jan Beukes article in SA Philatelist December 2014 and  GW Reynolds great article - 'Union of SA: Notes on used high values and telegraphic cancellations' in SA Philatelist v 1no 7 Pages 95 - 98 (1923). My recommendation is that all stamps be sent via Registered Post as I will not be responsible for those sent without Registered tracking. International rates will be confirmed based upon the destination country. Successful bidding!

Freya postal agency was named after Freya Weber, nee Wilhelmi, daughter of Adolf and Elsa Wilhelmi, who came from Germany to the Witwatersrand in 1891. They settled on the farm "Driefontein" about 16km from Johannesburg in the area now known as Sandton. This is where Freya was born. The postal agency operated from the store shown in the photograph copy below on "Freya's Estate." A German couple, Mr and Mrs Schwantus, ran the store. The other photograph copy below shows mother Elisa and daughter Freya. On offer is a postcard as per scan below from Hanover, Germany (26/03/09) addressed to Elsa and postmarked by receiving office " Freya, Johannesburg (23 APR 1909)". The postal agency opened in January 1908 and closed in 1928. A unique postal history item of early Johannesburg.
