TRANSVAAL: SCARCE EARLY JOHANNESBURG SUB-OFFICES: "FREYA". IN SOUTH AFRICA

Freya postal agency was named after Freya Weber, nee Wilhelmi, daughter of Adolf and Elsa Wilhelmi, who came from Germany to the Witwatersrand in 1891. They settled on the farm "Driefontein" about 16km from Johannesburg in the area now known as Sandton. This is where Freya was born. The postal agency operated from the store shown in the photograph copy below on "Freya's Estate." A German couple, Mr and Mrs Schwantus, ran the store. The other photograph copy below shows mother Elisa and daughter Freya. On offer is a postcard as per scan below from Hanover, Germany (26/03/09) addressed to Elsa and postmarked by receiving office " Freya, Johannesburg (23 APR 1909)". The postal agency opened in January 1908 and closed in 1928. A unique postal history item of early Johannesburg.
