A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lieutenant Aldo Raine (aka Aldo 'the Apache', Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible, or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal, Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as 'The Basterds', which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz (aka 'The Bear Jew', Eli Roth) and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) goes awry, they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of 'The Nation's Pride', a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), at a modest theatre owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere, they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna, too, longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees, and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theatre in the process. Age: 18

Hardcover in very good condition. Dust jacket has slight wear to edges. R46 postage in SA.  Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller was a German anti-Nazi theologian and Lutheran pastor. He is best known for his statement, " First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist...... and there was no one left to speak for me. He was a national conservative and initially a supporter of Adolf Hitler, but he became one of the founders of the Confessional Church, which opposed the nazification of German Protestant churches. He vehemently opposed the Nazis' Aryan Paragraph, but made remarks about Jews that some scholars have called antisemitic. For his opposition to the Nazis' state control of the churches, Niemöller was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1937 to 1945. He narrowly escaped execution and survived imprisonment. After his imprisonment, he expressed his deep regret about not having done enough to help the victims of the Nazis. He turned away from his earlier nationalistic beliefs and was one of the initiators of the Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt. From the 1950s on, he was a vocal pacifist and anti-war activist, and vice-chair of War Resisters' International from 1966 to 1972. He met with Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War and was a committed campaigner for nuclear disarmament.

Freya postal agency was named after Freya Weber, nee Wilhelmi, daughter of Adolf and Elsa Wilhelmi, who came from Germany to the Witwatersrand in 1891. They settled on the farm "Driefontein" about 16km from Johannesburg in the area now known as Sandton. This is where Freya was born. The postal agency operated from the store shown in the photograph copy below on "Freya's Estate." A German couple, Mr and Mrs Schwantus, ran the store. The other photograph copy below shows mother Elisa and daughter Freya. On offer is a postcard as per scan below from Hanover, Germany (26/03/09) addressed to Elsa and postmarked by receiving office " Freya, Johannesburg (23 APR 1909)". The postal agency opened in January 1908 and closed in 1928. A unique postal history item of early Johannesburg.
