PAUL ALBERTS "GEBROKE LAND" FIRST EDITION, ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA'S LEADING PHOTOGRAPHERS P aul Alberts, one of South Africa’s leading social documentary photographers, was born in 1946 in Pretoria. He spent his youth in Botswana and the Limpopo Province. He matriculated at Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool in 1963 after which he attended the University of Pretoria but did not complete his studies. In 1965 he travelled to Europe and lived in Paris. He worked as a journalist on various newspapers (Die Vaderland, Die Transvaler, The Cape Argus, Die Burger). At Die Burger he was attached to the paper’s arts page. In 1975 he turned to freelance photography with his main interest being social documentary and theatre photography.
