Flight Without End tells the story of a young ex-officer of the Austro-Hungarian army in the 1914-18 War, who makes his way back from captivity in Siberia and service with the Bolshevik army, only to find that the old order that shaped him has crumbled and there is no place for him in the new 'European' culture that has taken its place. Everywhere - in his dealings with family, with society, with women - he finds himself an outsider, both attracted and repelled by the values of the old world, yet unable to accept the new ideologies. About the author (2002) Joseph Roth (1894-1939) has been admired by J. M. Coetzee, Cathleen Schine, Jeffrey Eugenides, Joseph Brodsky, and Nadine Gordimer, among others.
