A pair of early 20th century Ci Wara head-dresses. Male and Female Antelope pair on wooden bases inlaid with brass. Geography: Mali, Bamako region Culture: Bamana peoples Medium:Wood, metal and brass bands, thread Dimensions:H 74.7cm incl base. H 64cm x W 14cm x D 4 cm. Age related wear. Among the Bamana, oral traditions credit a mythical being named Ci Wara, a divine being half mortal and half animal, with the introduction of agriculture to the Bamana. Bamana society is primarily an agricultural one; even today the majority of Bamana peoples are subsistence farmers. These headdresses, also called ci wara, are carved to honor that original mythical being. Under Ci Wara's guidance, humans first learned to cultivate the land and became prosperous and able farmers. When humans gradually became careless and wasteful, however, Ci Wara is said to have buried himself in the earth. To honor Ci Wara's memory, the Bamana created a boli, a power object in which his spirit could reside, and carved headdresses such as these to represent him. Ci wara headdresses combine antelope features with those of other animals that are significant within Bamana culture, such as the earth-digging aardvark or the armored pangolin. The animals are observed in nature to excel in actions that are also critical to the success of the farming effort and, therefore, Bamana life. The elegant and tapered heads of the sculptures, along with the neck, ears, and horns, are modeled on antelope forms. The lower part of the sculpture refers to the aardvark. These headdresses are also characterized by decoration with pierced openwork designs, which create an interplay between positive and negative space, and finely incised geometric patterns, which add to their texture. Highly collectable

Freya postal agency was named after Freya Weber, nee Wilhelmi, daughter of Adolf and Elsa Wilhelmi, who came from Germany to the Witwatersrand in 1891. They settled on the farm "Driefontein" about 16km from Johannesburg in the area now known as Sandton. This is where Freya was born. The postal agency operated from the store shown in the photograph copy below on "Freya's Estate." A German couple, Mr and Mrs Schwantus, ran the store. The other photograph copy below shows mother Elisa and daughter Freya. On offer is a postcard as per scan below from Hanover, Germany (26/03/09) addressed to Elsa and postmarked by receiving office " Freya, Johannesburg (23 APR 1909)". The postal agency opened in January 1908 and closed in 1928. A unique postal history item of early Johannesburg.

REGIMENT BOTHA TITLE BADGE Named or the Prime Minister and Boer general, Regiment Botha was formed on April 1 1934 at Ermelo and recruited in the then-northern and eastern Transvaal. By 1939 there were two battalions but only the second was mobilised on June 19, 1940. The unit was brigaded with 3 Transvaal Scottish and the SA Irish and served in Ethiopia. It arrived in North Africa as part of 5 SA Brigade in May 1941 and met its nemesis at the hands of the Deutsches Afrika Korps on Totensontag, November 23, 1941 when, as Major G Tylden puts it, it was “badly cut up at Sidi Rezegh and suffered heavily”. The next month, the survivors of 2 Regt Botha and the other units of 5 SA Brigade were reorganised into a composite battalion for further service. The identity of the other units disappeared and after reinforcement by a draft of Witwatersrand Rifles, 2 Regt Botha was back at full strength by April 1942. The regiment fought at first Alamein from July to October 1942, helping to stop Panzerarmee Afrika in its tracks. The unit returned to South Africa in January 1943. In August, 2 Regt Botha and Regiment President Steyn merged “for the duration” to form the Botha-President Steyn Armoured Commando, assigned to 6 SA Armoured Division. Once in Italy, the unit as broken up, with some going to the Pretoria Regiment and other to the Imperial Light Horse (now Light Horse Regiment). In 1951 2 Regiment Botha became the Regiment Christiaan Beyers.   Current role: Motorised infantry =  Current base: Barberton Battle honours: Motto: Altyd gereed (Always ready).       Condition:  Good. Complete. Uncleaned.   Sold as seen in the images. Images form part for the description.
