Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock. When heated at very high temperatures, Perlite expands to 15 times its original volume much like popcorn. The extremely lightweight particles are composed of microscopic spheres that have a porous and broken surface that promotes healthy root and plant growth. It provides excellent aeration and drainage of the root system while providing a significant holding capacity for both water and soluble nutrients. Perlite is natural, sterile, ultra-lightweight, non-toxic, and virtually pH neutral. It is used for the propagation of seedlings and cuttings, as a soil conditioner, as a hydroponic growing medium, on roof deck gardens, nursery stocks, hanging baskets and more. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this product, we are unable to ship this item to buyers outside the borders of South Africa. On offer is a 5 Litre Bag Click Here For Other Pack Sizes

What is it? Growing bonsai from seed can be a very rewarding experience. Using a good seedling medium ensures that your seedlings get off to the best start possible.  Our Professional Seedling mix contains a mixture of Perlite, Coir and Peat Moss. Perlite is volcanic glass used to enhance aeration and drainage. It also retains moisture. Peat Moss is said to be a sterile medium and is harvested decayed plant material. Useful in this mix as it retains moisture and is very light. Coir is made from the husk of the coconut. Similar to Peat Moss in most respects however it is not as moisture retentive. How to use it Empty the contents of the bag into a suitable container with many drainage holes. Plant your seeds as directed and then water thoroughly. Place in a warm, sunny position although not in full sun, and keep slightly moist at all times. Damp sheets of newsprint paper are useful as a sort of mulch, covering the surface until the seeds germinate and can then be removed and discarded. Bag contents 30% Perlite 20% Peat Moss 50% Coir

Perlite is a unique volcanic mineral which expands from four to twenty times its original volume when it is quickly heated to a temperature of approximately 1600-1700 degrees F. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock which causes the perlite to pop in a manner similar to that of popcorn. When expanded, each granular, snow-white particle of perlite is sterile with a neutral pH and contains many tiny, closed cells or bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which provide an extremely large surface area. These surfaces hold moisture and nutrients and make them available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical shape of each particle, air passages are formed which provide optimum aeration and drainage. Because perlite is sterile, it is free of disease, seeds, and insects. Perlite has been used for many years throughout the world for soil conditioning and as a component of growing mixes with materials such as peat moss or bark. Extensive studies have shown that the unique capillary action of perlite makes it a superior growing media for hydroponic cultures. Among the many uses of perlite today are propagation and seed cultivation, plug production and transplants, interiorscape and planter growing, composting, hydroponic cultures, turf and lawns, and around shrubs, trees, and landscaping. What is it? Akadama is a granular volcanic clay-like (although it is not clay) mineral which occurs naturally in Japan. It has been extensively used by Japanese gardeners and bonsai artists for many centuries as a growing medium for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. It is mined from the surface of the ground, after which it is graded and packaged. Unlike LECA it is not fired at high temperatures however when it is mined from greater depths it tends to be harder or it might be slightly baked. It has many unique qualities, one of which is that when it is wet it has a darker colour so indicates when watering is needed  Akadama is unique as a growing medium and is sought after due to its ability for water retention and nutrients due to its high CEC value. However at the same time it provides porosity and free drainage. How to use? Akadama can be combined with other elements such as crushed stone, composted bark, peat, or for best effect use  pumice. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Bjorn Bjorholm Akadama, lava rock, and pumice. Use a 1:1:1 ratio respectively for conifers and a 2:1:1 ratio respectively for deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species. Peter Tea 2 parts akadama, 1 part hyuga (Japanese pumice) and 1 part coarse river sand.  Bag Contents Akadama,  Double Red Line Brand Sizes Available Small (1~5mm) Suited to mame, shohin and general bonsai growing mixes. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 10L bucket. Medium (5~10mm) Suitable for drainage layers and for medium to large bonsai. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 10L bucket.
