Subtitle: Dr Leander Starr Jameson, the Inspiration for Kipling's Masterpiece Author: Chris Ash Publisher: 30 Degrees South Publishers / Helion () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 384 Dimensions: 23.5 x 15.6 x 2 cm +++ by Chris Ash +++ The famous poem If by Rudyard Kipling is based on the life of Jameson, and the suffering he endured as a result of the doomed raid that he and his Rhodesian and Bechuanaland policemen carried out against Paul Kruger's Transvaal Republic in . In this engaging biography, Chris Ash recounts the life of this colonial statesman. He was an enigmatic man: when he died The Times estimated that his astonishing personal sway over his followers was equaled only by that of Parnell, the Irish patriot. During the fervor of the South African diamond rush Jameson established a small medical practice in Kimberley in ; it was here that he met and forged a lifelong friendship with Cecil John Rhodes. Jameson's thirst for adventure, coupled with Rhodes's dream of expanding the British Empire from the Cape to Cairo, led to the occupation of Mashonaland in , with Jameson having laid the groundwork in his political dealings with Lobengula, king of the Matabele. This is Jameson's story: from Administrator of Mashonaland, to the 'invasion' of Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique), the Matabele War, the infamous 'Jameson Raid' and his subsequent trial and incarceration in London.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

2000.  First Edition. Hard cover without dust cover, 269 pages. Very good condition.. Under 1kg. The commemoration of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 has brought renewed interest in the fortunes and strategies of the two warring parties and the various battles that were won and lost. This book looks at how the war impacted upon a particular community, that of Pretoria, the capital of the Transvaal republic and the seat of the Boer government.

AMAZING  HARDCOVER BOOK  WRITTEN BY FRANCOIS MALAN SOME OF THE CONTENT HEADINGS: THE ALLURE OF KRUGER'S GOLD WAR-TIME PRODUCTION OF GOLD  AND THE MISSING OUNCES ESCAPING ALONG THE  DELGOA BAY RAILWAY LINE THE WONDERING GOVERNMENT AND THEIR GOLD WHERE IS THE GOLD?     GET THIS GREAT OFFER NOW   AT THE RELEASE PRICE OF R 750 ---------------------------------------------------------------- EXTRACT FROM THE CHAPTER TITLED GOLD  PRODUCTION IN THE  ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK THE DISCOVERY OF GOLD CHANGED THE FORTUNES OF THE TRANSVAAL. THE FIRST DISCOVERY WAS MADE IN 1872 AT THE EERSTELING GOLD FIELD IN THE PIETERSBURG GREENSTONE BELT (CLOSE TO MODERN DAY POLOKWANE). THIS WAS FOLLOWED IN 1873 BY THE DISCOVERY OF ALLUVIAL GOLD AT PILGRIM'S REST AND SURROUNDING AREAS. AN INTERESTING CONNECTION BETWEEN PILGRIM'S REST AND THE KRUGER MILLIONS IS DESCRIBED IN A LATER CHAPTER. THESE EARLY GOLD DISCOVERIES SLIGHTLY IMPROVED THE FINANCES OF THE ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK AND EVEN ALLOWED PRESIDENT THOMAS BURGERS TO STRIKE THE FIRST GOLD PONDE FOR THE REPUBLIC 1874. UNFORTUNATELY, BY 1876, HE WAS UNPOPULAR AND THE REPUBLIC WAS SLIDING INTO BANKRUPTCY. THE UPRISING OF THE NATIVE TRIBE, PARTICULARLY THE PEDI TRIBE UNDER CHIEF SEKUKUNI, ALSO CAUSED SECURITY CONCERNS AMONGST THE BURGHERS. THIS ALLOWED BRITAIN TO ANNEX THE TRANSVAAL WITHOUT A SHOT BEING FIRED ON THE 12 APRIL 1877. DURING THIS PERIOD OF POLITICAL TURMOIL, PAUL KRUGER ROSE TO PROMINENCE. HE WAS ONE OF THE THREE LEADERS AT THE HISTORIC PAARDEKRAAL ASSEMBLY WHERE 6,000 BURGHERS PLEDGED TO REGAIN THE INDEPENDENCE OF THEIR REPUBLIC. THE PAARDEKRAAL MONUMENT IN KRUGERSDORP WAS LATER ERECTED AT THIS HISTORIC SITE. THE RESULTING FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE BROKE OUT ON THE 16 DECEMBER 1880 AND ON THE 26 FEBRUARY 1881 THE BRITISH SUFFERED A HUMILIATING DEFEAT AT THE BATTLE OF AMAJUBA. IN 1883, PAUL KRUGER WAS ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE TRANSVAAL AND HE RETAINED THIS PRESIDENCY DURING THE NEXT THREE ELECTIONS. AFTER THE TRANSVAAL REGAINED INDEPENDENCE, A FURTHER GOLD DISCOVERY WAS MADE IN THE BARBERTON AREA IN 1883. THE RESULTING ECONOMIC BOOM IN THE AREA RESULTED IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A STOCK EXCHANGE. SOME EXCEPTIONAL GOLD DISCOVERIES WERE MADE AND THE FIRST 50 TONS OF ORE AT THE FAMOUS GOLDEN QUARRY PRODUCED NEARLY 300 OUNCES OF GOLD. THE BARBERTON GOLD FIELD PRODUCED APPROXIMATELY 252,553 KG OF GOLD FOR THE PERIOD 1883 TO 1983. THIS IMPORTANT DISCOVERY WAS NEVERTHELESS SOON DWARFED BY PRODUCTION IN THE WITWATERSRAND BASIN.
