This railway station between Waterval Onder and Godwanrivier on the Eastern Line was originally named “Nooitgedacht” but was changed to Airlie in honour of Lieutenant-Colonel, the Earl of Airlie, Commanding Officer of the 12 th Lancers, who was killed at the battle of “Diamond Hill” or “Donkerhoek”, which took place on the 11 th and 12 th of June 1900 east of Pretoria. A rail office was operational between 1905 and 1908. The post card above was sent from Airlie (Station) (25-09-1907) via Waterval Onder to Middelburg (26-09-1907). Rated "RRR" by Putzel. Scarce strike.

On offer is a postcard posted from Mashanghaan's Rest, care of Bonne-Fooi postal agency (19-6-1894), located between Carolina and Machadodorp, via Hlomo Hlom (20-6-1894) to Barberton (23-6-1894). The postal agency at Hlomo Hlom operated from July 1887 to 1899, and postal items bearing it's postamrk are rare. Very little is known of Mashanghaan's Rest, and the "C. E. Kershaw" purple oval handstamp on the reverse makes this a unique item. Central horizontal fold. See scans below.

Cover from unknown origin within ZAR addressed to "p k Kromdraai, Distrik Middelburg" with Standerston backstamp of 12 May 1900 and Trichardsfontein cds of same date. Putzel lists 2 offices for Trichardsfontein. The first, 1890 - 1899, closed due to the Boer War, but this cover shows that the post office/agency was still operational or the cds was still being used. The second office is listed as being open from 1904 to 1906 whereafter it was renamed Trichardt.  Both datestamps are very rare. Trichardtfontein, 20 kms east of Kinross, was founded as a new Dutch Reformed parish and proclaimed a town in 1906. The town was apparently named for Carel Trichardt, eldest son of Voortrekker leader Louis Trichardt.  As per scans below.
