Pawlowski, Professor and Chair, Department of English, California State University,Bakersfield. Virginia Woolf's singular technique in Mrs Dalloway heralds a break with the traditional novel form and reflects a genuine humanity and a concern with the experiences that both enrich and stultify existence. Society hostess, Clarissa Dalloway is giving a party. Her thoughts and sensations on that one day, and the interior monologues of others whose lives are interwoven with hers gradually reveal the characters of the central protagonists. Sadly this 1938 book does not have a dust wrapper and the first blank page has been removed - Rest quite good.   >>> C ontains a chapter of autobiographical material relating to Hilton's own schooldays and his thoughts on the English public school system and how the world he knew was about to be changed by the coming shadow of WW2.  The remaining chapters are additional stories about Chips, the legendary acting headmaster of Brookfield School, and are largely concerned with Chips' deep psychological understanding about what makes a boy tick.  Most poignant of all is the last story in which Chips attempts to cheer up the boys during the dark days of 1917 as the horrors of the first world war loom ever larger, by organising a lavish Christmas party.  Alas a flu epidemic puts paid to his plans, and as the school breaks up early for an extended holiday, the boys are delighted, while poor Chips is left to contemplate a lonely Christmas at Brookfield.   ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

Lion's Head Publishers, 2007. 230 x 150 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xii + 310; photographs; cartoons. Very good condition. 'In an extensive career in journalism Andrew Drysdale has been close to momentous events - and knows many of the big-time players. "My neighbour Madiba. and others" tells their story - and his own. An anecdotal journey, from cadet reporter to newspaper editor (Pretoria News and The Argus, Cape Town) in the apartheid years to the new South Africa, it traverses brutal repression and violent upheaval to inspirational leadership. Mostly it's about people. Big, important people, and small, equally important people. all the while with time out for the humorous and bizarre. The remarkable Nelson "Madiba" Mandela has pride of place. Share his poignant thoughts in prison, and joyous memories of a boyhood roaming riverbanks and wooded countryside in his beloved Transkei. Join Madiba's epic return to freedom - and shrink at the danger on the very day of his release. That and many other asides to the prisoner who became president, and icon to the world. Here, too, intrigue and power plays between beleaguered presidents PW Botha and FW de Klerk as they square up for the decisive end game. Andrew Drysdale also is drawn to the melting pot of Africa. Face to face encounters serious and light-hearted await in a strife-torn and beguiling continent. And he knows all about the white-hot tension - and vaudeville - of journalism. He tells what it's like - warts and all.. a revealing and compelling read.'

A Furnace Afloat: The Wreck of the Hornet and the Harrowing 4,300-mile Voyage of Its Survivors Hardcover – September 30, 2003 - Joe Jackson - 2003 - Paperback as new. On May 3, 1866, the clipper ship Hornet was consumed by fire and sank in the middle of the South Pacific. Thirty-one survivors boarded three tiny lifeboats and began the 4,300-mile voyage to the Hawaiian Islands. Along the way, they faced terrible heat, storms, starvation, treachery, mutiny and the threat of cannibalism. Those who made landfall, six weeks later, became some of the 19th century's most famous castaways. True crime veteran Jackson (Leavenworth Train, etc.) superbly retells the tale, drawing on impressive primary sources. In addition to the journals left by the captain and two passengers, Jackson incorporates interviews with the survivors conducted by a young reporter named Mark Twain, who happened to be in Hawaii at the time. (Twain's articles on the Hornet were picked up by newspapers worldwide and made his reputation, despite a mistaken byline in Harper's of "Mark Swain.") These sources allow Jackson to quote dialogue, sketch characters' thoughts and avoid the speculation that diminishes so many historical narratives. These events are dramatic enough: a thief steals bread-and murder is nearly the result; a seaman sacrifices a water ration to a sick man he fully expects to eat the next day; and mutineers huddle in the stern to plot. Jackson weaves in astute tidbits of history, philosophy and science, explaining why, for example, cannibalism is not a physiologically effective survival tactic. Vividly and sympathetically written, this is a tragic yet triumphant book about the limits of humanity and human endurance.
