It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The "Feasting on the Word Worship Companion: Liturgies for Year C, Volume One, " is the first of six volumes (two for each lectionary year) in a new series for worship leaders and pastors. Based on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), this book is an invaluable aid that provides all liturgical pieces needed in preparing for worship each week. A team of eleven ecumenical and seasoned liturgy writers, under the creative leadership of Kimberly Bracken Long, offer a multitude of poetic prayers and responsive reading for all parts of worship. In addition, drawn from the lectionary each week are a question for reflection and household prayers for morning and evening so churches can include them in their bulletin for parishioners. During times of the year when two different tracks of Old Testament texts are offered by the RCL, this resource offers an entire set of materials for each track. Also, a CD-ROM is included with each book and easily enables planners to cut and paste relevant readings, prayers, or questions into worship bulletins. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days TCG is proud to conclude the centennial year of Thornton Wilder's birth with the publication of Volume Two of his collected short plays. Thornton Wilder -- winner of three Pulitzer Prizes (one for fiction; two for drama) -- was not only one of America's greatest men-of-letters, but one of the most popular and most enjoyed. In addition to such highly regarded and popular novels as The Bridge of San Luis Rey and The Ides of March, he was one of our most successful playwrights. To this day, Our Town, The Matchmaker, and The Skin of Our Teeth remain among the best-loved and most-produced plays in the canon. To many contemporary playwrights, Wilder is -- together with Gertrude Stein, whom he championed -- the font of experimental drama in America. The diversity of form in his best-known works proves his mastery. Though his full-length works were few, he is widely perceived as one of this century's major American dramatists. Features Summary Volume Two of the collected short plays by one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. Miranda Don't Open Your Eyes is volume one and is extremely funny. The antics of a cheeky youngster growing up in a warm and loving atmosphere with an occasional tug of the heartstrings. Our hero hates all forms of bullying or any mistreatment of 'those less fortunate.' The story highlights the adventures of 12 year old Miranda. She has an IQ of 143 and is a Martial Arts Junior National Champion. As her mother and father tackle their parental duties and responsibilities amidst an atmosphere of fun and laughter, we share the young formative years of a highly intelligent child who quickly displays a deep concern for people less fortunate than herself. Whilst 'learning as much as they are teaching', Miranda's parents never avoid an issue whenever she asks a serious question. She displays a deep concern over poverty and hardship in the third world. At the age of twelve she openly declares that when she is grown up she will try to help those in need of love and support..Miranda comes into possession of a magical book which transports her back to late Victorian times. The year is 1896, times are hard and Miranda witnesses abject poverty and aspects of cruelty. She encounters a gang of ragamuffins led by a large girl bully named Florence. In a manner most pleasing, Miranda subdues an attack on her person and immediately lectures her assailant. However, when attacked by Florence's older brother, she displays her amazing skills and wins the respect of the whole gang. Later in the story, the bully girl approaches Miranda and asks for her forgiveness and friendship. Tears flow as Miranda comforts the girl and explains to her the way forward. Having witnessed unbelievable brutality and starvation exacted on an eleven year old waif named Elizabeth, Miranda sees no alternative to bringing her home to the year 2015. much to the amazement of her parents! Miranda is often cheeky but never disrespectful. Throughout the many comical encounters in this book, Miranda emphasis's the importance of working hard at school, getting on with ones parents and never getting involved with bullies. This is a book for all ages to read and enjoy. With this new lectionary commentary series, Westminster John Knox Press offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market today. When complete, the twelve volumes of the series will cover all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with movable occasions, such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and All Saints Day. For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical challenges of the text. They might focus on the Gospel text, for instance, by reading all four essays provided for that text, or they might explore connections between the Hebrew Bible, Psalm, Gospel, and Epistle texts by reading the theological essays for each one. Each lectionary year will consist of four volumes, one for the Advent and Christmas season, one for Lent and Easter, and one for each half of Ordinary Time. While the twelve volumes of the series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that nonlectionary preachers may make use of its contents. This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.
