But who really were the Beatles, and how did they and everything else in the 1960s fuse so explosively? Mark Lewisohn's three-part biography is the first true and accurate account of the Beatles, a contextual history built upon impeccable research and written with energy, style, objectivity and insight. This first volume covers the crucial and less-known early period - the Liverpool and Hamburg years of a hungry rock and roll band, when all the sharp characters and situations take shape. This is the Beatles like you've never read them before. It isn't just 'another book', it's the book, from the world-acknowledged authority. Forget what you know and discover the complete story. Copied out in Jane Austen's youthful hand, Volume the First, which takes its name from the inscription on the cover, preserves the stories, playlets, verses, and moral fragments she wrote during her teenage years. For the first time, the entire manuscript of Volume the First is available in a printed facsimile. In it, we see the young author's delight in language, in expressing ideas and sentiments sharply and economically. We also see Jane Austen learning the craft of genre by closely observing and parodying the popular stories of her day. Kathryn Sutherland's introduction places Jane's Austen's earliest works in context and explains how she mimicked even the style and manner in which these stories were presented and arranged on the page. Clearly the work of a teenager, Volume the First reveals the development of the unmistakable voice and style that would mark out Jane Austen as one of the most popular authors of all time. None of her six famous novels survives in manuscript form. This is a unique opportunity to own a likeness of Jane Austen's hand in the form of a complete manuscript facsimile. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days It is twenty years since the events of La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust Volume One unfolded and saw the baby Lyra Belacqua begin her life-changing journey. It is seven years since readers left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, bestselling His Dark Materialssequence. Now, in The Secret Commonwealth, we meet Lyra Silvertongue. And she is no longer a child... The second volume of Sir Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now twenty years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right. Theirs is a world at once familiar and extraordinary, and they must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search for what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert, and the mystery of the elusive Dust. The Secret Commonwealth is truly a book for our times; a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of our greatest writers. Volume 2 1971. Hard  cover with dust cover, 527 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. Compiled and translated by R.Raven-Hart During the first fifty years of Dutch colonisation at the Cape of Good Hope many travellers arrived in Table Bay, on their way to the East:some came voluntarily, others by force of circumstance.   They came ashore, looked around, observed strange, indigenous people, interesting plants and animals, they visited the little settlement, met the local personalities, wondered at the way-of-life. They also consulted and negotiated with the Dutch officials, and sought help in their difficulties.   And, most frequently, they recorded their impressions so as to inform and astonish their firneds in Europe with the wonders they had seen. These impressions were sometimes published; but more often they appeared in ships' log books and other mss, unpublished, and available to the researchers of today in archives and special liabraries only.   Such recorded impressions are the subject matter of this book: Major Raven-Hart has selected, transcribed and meticulously translated a total of 104 accounts by visitors to the Cape between 1652 and 1702. They are taken from the original Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Danish and German; with one exception, the list is exhaustive for this period.   The language styles are varied; quaint and vivid, penetrating, and sometimes quite coarse.   To accompany the transcribed texts, and to help the reader enjoy and understand, Major Raven-Hart has provided background and context notes to describe contemporary happenings in Europe, official records by the Cape commanders and governors and biographical notes on the writers.   In the index the reader will find references to animals, plants, persons, names, etc; a glossary of foreign words, definitions of various sea-faring and navigational terms and expressions; identifications of flora and fauna, bibliographies; and explanatory notes. This index is not just a valuable and practical working tool-it is virtually a concentrated commpanion-book or vade mecum for late 17th C history of the Cape.   A feature of this book are the illustrations: the author has been able to find 65 engravings, maps, title pages, portraits-most of which have been reproduced as full-or double-pages.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Jonathan Sumption's Cursed Kings is the eagerly anticipated fourth volume in what Allan Massie has called "one of the great historical works of our time." Cursed Kings tells the story of the destruction of France by the madness of its king and the greed and violence of his family. In the early fifteenth century France, Europe's strongest and most populous state, suffered a complete internal collapse. As the warring parties within fought for the spoils of the kingdom under the vacant gaze of the mad King Charles VI, the country was left at the mercy of one of the most remarkable rulers of the European Middle Ages: Henry V of England, who had destroyed the French army on the field of Agincourt in October 1415 and left most of France's leadership dead. Sumption recounts in extraordinary detail the relentless campaign of conquest that brought Henry to the streets and palaces of Paris within just a few years. He died at the age of thirty-six in a French royal castle in 1422, just two months before he would have become king of France. Six centuries later, these extraordinary events are overlaid by the resounding words of Shakespeare and the potent national myths of England and France. In Cursed Kings, Jonathan Sumption strips away the layers to rediscover the personalities and events that lie beneath.
