Freesia laxa  Seeds Freesia is a genus of species of flowering plants in the family Iridaceae, native to Africa. Of the 14 species, 12 are native to Cape Province, South Africa, the remaining two to tropical Africa, one species extending north of the equator to Sudan. The genus was named in honor of Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (), German physician. They are herbaceous plants which grow from a corm 1-2.5 cm diameter, which sends up a tuft of narrow leaves cm long, and a sparsely branched stem cm tall bearing a few leaves and a loose one-sided spike of fragrant narrowly funnel-shaped flowers. Freesia laxa is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces. It is widespread across eastern South Africa from the Mpumalanga Escarpment to Port Elizabeth, and extending northwards through eastern tropical Africa. Astridia is a genus of about 9 mesembs in the family Aizoaceae. It is named after Astrid Schwantes, the wife of the German botanist and archaeologist Professor Gustav Schwantes. They are attractive shrubs but require large pots or plant them outside in raised flower beds. They do well in rich soil and flower profusely, though erratically during winter.         Astridia longifolia is a very beautiful succulent shrub that reaches up to 50cm in height. It has silvery keeled leaves and during autumn it bears striking silky red 5cm in diameter flowers. Their preferred mode of cultivation is a bright and sunny position with gritty free-draining soil. Gerbera is a genus of approximately 30 species from the sunflower family, Asteraceae. It was named in honour of the German botanist and naturalist Traugott Gerber. They are found in South America, Africa and tropical Asia. Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colours. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum. Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives. They are attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. Parodia is a genus of flowering plants in the cactus family Cactaceae. The genus is named after the Argentine botanist Lorenzo Raimundo Parodi who lived from 1895 to 1966. Flowers in all species arise from fuzzy buds, typically with bristles, at the apex. Flowers are cup-shaped and point straight up. They are easy to grow, have intriguing stems and spines and flower easily with brightly-coloured flowers. This fact in combination with their relatively small size, ensure that nearly all cactus growers will have some representative of this group. While advanced hobbyists may grow many of the various species and subspecies.           The genus has about 50 species, many of which have been transferred from Eriocactus, Notocactus and Wigginsia. They are native to the uplands of Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay and range from small globose plants to 1 meter tall columnar cacti. All are deeply ribbed and spiny, with single flowers at or near the crown. Some species produce offsets at the base and most are free flowering, with stunning blooms throughout the year. These cacti are perfect for rockeries, where they will give your garden splashes of colour or as pot plants on a sunny windowsill. Either way you are assured of many years of joy. Parodia leninghausii is a species of South American cactus commonly found as a houseplant. Common names include Lemon Ball, Golden Ball and Yellow Tower cactus. Botanist Karl Moritz Schumann named it after Wilhelm Lenninghaus (1845-1918), a native of North Rhine-Westphalia who, in the 1880s, left his hometown of Ennepetal and emigrated to Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he became Guillermo Lenninghaus, and collected cacti for the German grower Haage.
