Freesia caryophyllacea Seeds Freesia is a genus of species of flowering plants in the family Iridaceae, native to Africa. Of the 14 species, 12 are native to Cape Province, South Africa, the remaining two to tropical Africa, one species extending north of the equator to Sudan. The genus was named in honor of Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (), German physician. They are herbaceous plants which grow from a corm 1-2.5 cm diameter, which sends up a tuft of narrow leaves cm long, and a sparsely branched stem cm tall bearing a few leaves and a loose one-sided spike of fragrant narrowly funnel-shaped flowers. Freesia caryophyllacea is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province where it can be found from Wolseley to Swellendam, Hermanus and the Agulhas Plain. This is one of the most fragrant of the Freesias - much more fragrant than the hybrids commonly available & has a more beautiful flower too. It grows to a height of 10cm with blunt leaves that are often flat on ground. In early spring it bears fragrant white flowers with yellow markings.
