Sphagnum peat moss (SPM) is partially decomposed sphagnum moss. Its large cell structure enables it to absorb air and water like a sponge. Although peat moss does not contain nutrients, it adsorbs nutrients added to or present in the soil releasing them over time as the plants require. This saves valuable nutrients which are otherwise lost through leaching. Sphagnum Peat Moss is derived from the slow decomposition of sphagnum moss which accumulates in bogs (or peatlands). Harvesters clear bogs of vegetation and then dig shallow ditches to lower the water table so that the peat will dry and that the equipment necessary to harvest the peat can operate on the field. Once a bog is ditched, harvesting begins. Harrows loosen the top peat moss which then dries in the sun for two to three hours before being vacuumed into large harvesters. It is transported from the field to the plant where it is screened, graded and baled for storage or shipping. Please note that the 200 litre compressed bales are Lithuanian Peat Moss. Please note that this product is only available for delivery to customers within South Africa.     Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

What is it? Peat Moss is considered by some as the best organic growing medium for containerized plants known to mankind. Peat Moss is sterile, which is great when used in seedling mixes. However microbial life does thrive in it and it has the capacity to adsorb nutrients for future release. Despite its very light and open structure, it is water retentive but does not impede drainage in the root zone. How to use? Peat Moss may be used for indoor, balcony and container plants such as bonsai trees. Patented wetting agents within the Peat Moss, ensures quick absorption and distribution of irrigation water throughout the container. If using Peat Moss as an ingredient of a bonsai growing medium, ensure it is combined in a ratio of around 30/70 of Peat Moss to Leca for most trees. For species which prefer wetter roots or mature, highly developed bonsai where less vigorous growth is wanted, use higher ratios of Peat Moss for added moisture. Bag Contents 60% Black Peat Moss 40% Coarse White Spaghnum Peat Moss

What is it? Growing bonsai from seed can be a very rewarding experience. Using a good seedling medium ensures that your seedlings get off to the best start possible.  Our Professional Seedling mix contains a mixture of Perlite, Coir and Peat Moss. Perlite is volcanic glass used to enhance aeration and drainage. It also retains moisture. Peat Moss is said to be a sterile medium and is harvested decayed plant material. Useful in this mix as it retains moisture and is very light. Coir is made from the husk of the coconut. Similar to Peat Moss in most respects however it is not as moisture retentive. How to use it Empty the contents of the bag into a suitable container with many drainage holes. Plant your seeds as directed and then water thoroughly. Place in a warm, sunny position although not in full sun, and keep slightly moist at all times. Damp sheets of newsprint paper are useful as a sort of mulch, covering the surface until the seeds germinate and can then be removed and discarded. Bag contents 30% Perlite 20% Peat Moss 50% Coir

What is it? Vermiculite is exfoliated hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Like Groperl, it is extremely absorbent and lightweight, and can absorb many times its own weight in water. Unlike Groperl, it does retain nutrients. This coarse Vermiculite is ideal for use as a growing medium component in container plant culture as it promotes drainage. Vermiculite can be combined with other components such as Peat Moss or Leca from our Bonsai range to produce a soilless growing media for bonsai artists. These growing mediums promote enhanced root growth aided by Vermiculites effect on aeration. Any applied fertilizer is absorbed and is slowly released as the bonsai requires them. How to use? Alone or mixed with Peat Moss, Vermiculite can be used to germinate seeds. As a growing medium component, it should constitute no more than 20% of the total mix or the other components must retain very little moisture, such as Leca from our Bonsai range. Prevents mildew from infecting bulbs in storage. Bag Contents 100% Vermiculite

The Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) is the most well-known species of carnivorous plants. These insectivorous plants lure their prey using sweet-smelling nectar. When an insect lands on the head of the fly trap, they seek the source of the nectar, and if the plant is lucky, it will touch one of the many trigger hairs located within the jaws of the trap. Once triggered, the trap snaps closed, trapping the victim. The plant then secretes an enzyme which essentially 'dissolves' the insect, turning it into a digestible dinner. After a few days, the fly trap will re-open, to await its next victim. Venus Fly Traps are quite easy to grow, as long as they are given the proper conditions.            The Venus flytrap has a rosette of leaves up to 20 cm across. Each leaf has a flat stalk and ends in a trap. The centre is often reddish, and the sides of the trap are lined with stiff, comb-like bristles that interlock when the trap closes. The flowers are white, in a cluster at the top of a cm leafless stalk. They should be grown in very bright light, but not in direct, hot sun. A warm, humid environment, with a constant supply of moisture, such as you would find in a terrarium is ideal. The potting mixture should consist of a mix of 70% Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss and 30% Horticultural Perlite. The Venus flytrap also known as Venus's flytrap or Venus' flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States. Dionaea is a monotypic genus closely related to the waterwheel plant and sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceae.  The Venus flytrap is commonly grown as a curiosity plant and is a source of wonder for children and adults alike. Indeed, it is likely that the Venus flytrap has been the source of inspiration for many a horror film involving man-eating plants – a somewhat unique “use” within the plant kingdom! Dionaea muscipula has also been shown to contain naphthoquinones that may have medicinal value. These Dionaea muscipula seeds are the product of careful hand pollination of numerous superior Venus Flytrap clones. The seed and pollen parents of these seeds include Big Mouth, Red Dragon, Red Piranha, B52, Royal Red, Czech Giant, Southwest Giant, FTS Maroon Monster, Low Giant, Jaws, Big Vigorous, Fused Tooth, Sawtooth and Holland Red. This pack consists of Mixed Giant Dionaea muscipula Forms

Dyckia brevifolia Seeds Common Names: Pineapple Dyckia - Pineapple Bromeliad   Dyckia brevifolia or Pineapple Dyckia as it is commonly known is a stemless, succulent, terrestrial bromeliad, native chiefly to Brazil and Argentina. It flowers during summer and bears 7mm long sulfur-orange to yellow flowers. It does best in full sun to light shade, with night temperatures of °C and day temperatures of 20°C or higher. Pot in a lime-free compost consisting of 2 parts peat moss to 1 part loam to 1 part sharp sand or perlite. Allow the potting mix to become moderately dry between thorough watering. Fertilize every 2 weeks with a balanced fertilizer diluted to ½ strength recommended on the label. It is propagated from the new shoots that appear at the base of the plant. Dyckia is a genus of the botanical family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Pitcairnioideae. The genus is named after the Prussian botanist, botanical artist and horticulturist The Prince and Earl of Salm Reifferscheid-Dyck (). Dyckias, with stiff and thorny leaves, prefer rocky and/or sunny areas and have a natural tendency to clump leading to thick, large mats. The subfamily Pitcairnioideae contains several "terrestrial" members of the Bromeliaceae, with cultivated genera including Dyckia, Hechtia, Pitcairnia and Puya. Considered to be the most ancient lineage of bromeliads, they are endemic to arid and high-altitude regions of Brazil and the central part of South America.  You're buying a pack of 10 Seeds We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions.

Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 171 species around the world. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats. Some of the showiest species are from the botanically rich Cape Province of South Africa. They should not be confused with the ever popular Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Both the botanical name and the English common name refer to the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew. Drosera has also been recorded for its medicinal use against warts, corns and sunburn.            Ethnobotanically a tea made from the plant was also used as a tranquilizer and aphrodisiac. Whether indigenous or exotic, Sundews deserve a little corner in all carnivorous plant collections. They make fascinating indoor houseplants. These curiosity plants grow best in pots filled with a mix of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Vermiculite and Horticultural Perlite. They can also be grown in our general Carnivorous Growing Medium. Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is the most common sundew in cultivation, since it is so easy to grow. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the , simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.

Perlite is a unique volcanic mineral which expands from four to twenty times its original volume when it is quickly heated to a temperature of approximately 1600-1700 degrees F. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock which causes the perlite to pop in a manner similar to that of popcorn. When expanded, each granular, snow-white particle of perlite is sterile with a neutral pH and contains many tiny, closed cells or bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which provide an extremely large surface area. These surfaces hold moisture and nutrients and make them available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical shape of each particle, air passages are formed which provide optimum aeration and drainage. Because perlite is sterile, it is free of disease, seeds, and insects. Perlite has been used for many years throughout the world for soil conditioning and as a component of growing mixes with materials such as peat moss or bark. Extensive studies have shown that the unique capillary action of perlite makes it a superior growing media for hydroponic cultures. Among the many uses of perlite today are propagation and seed cultivation, plug production and transplants, interiorscape and planter growing, composting, hydroponic cultures, turf and lawns, and around shrubs, trees, and landscaping.
