Book of Remembrance: Rhodesia Native Regiment & Rhodesian African Rifles, 19161981 (Gerry van Tonder) Over the years since 1980 when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, much has been written and recorded about the various regiments that served the country of Rhodesia from the early pioneers in the 1890's, right through to the day that these fine units marched off their respective parade grounds for the last time and into the august annals of history.  Much of this service for the older regiments, such as the Rhodesia Regiment, the British South Africa Police, the Rhodesia Native Regiment and the Rhodesian African Rifles, was as a contribution to the British Empires war efforts during the South African War, both World Wars, and other regional conflicts of the 1950's and 1960's.  This Book of Remembrance has been specifically compiled as a lasting tribute to the men of the Rhodesia Native Regiment (RNR) and its successor the Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR) who, during the proud and honourable life of these units, made the ultimate sacrifice. It is not a definitive history of these regiments, as this has been admirably done in books such as Masodja and Ragtime Soldiers.  Accordingly, the book briefly looks at the history of each of the regiments and their battalions, with pictorial depictions of uniforms, badges, theatres of operation and colours. Chapters are also dedicated to those who received honours and awards for bravery and dedication to duty, with citations where it has been possible to source.  Nominal rolls, some incomplete, of commanding officers, officers and senior non-commissioned officers add to the overall remembrance theme of the book. The main content is the various Rolls of Honour, covering all the major conflicts and areas of operation in which the two units saw active service. Book and wrapper in great condition - Actually looks brand new and unread to me - 403 pages which includes and excellent index at the back -  Before Southern Africa's peac e there came the war. Between August 1987 and July 1988 Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, the South African Defence Force, Angolan government forces directed by Soviet officers and an Angolan opposition guerrilla army trained by Red China, France and the United States clashed in the biggest land battles in the history of black Africa. It was a fierce collision of ideologies and of modern warplanes, missiles and tanks across one of the world's most remote and undeveloped terrains known to Angola's former Portuguese colonial rulers as the Land at the End of the Earth. Thousands of men died and thousands more were terribly maimed. Weapons and ammunition worth billions of dollars were destroyed and expended. The Angolan economy was crippled. The budgets of Cuba, South Africa and the Soviet Union were subjected to terrible strains. It was a War for Africa's very soul. It culminated in a peace agreement, the New York Accords, signed on 22 December 1988,. The reader will learn what it is like to encounter an advanced Soviet MiG fighter in a French Mirage warplane 30,000 feet above the forests of Africa; what emotion grip a reconnaissance commando lying unseen inside Cuban lines within feet of enemy soldiers; how it feels in an armoured car to face a Soviet T-55 tank at just 30 feet in burning bush and swirling dust and smoke. This is, however, far more than just an account of men in battle. Woven through are details of the political background to the conflict and the diplomatic initiatives which governed the lives and deaths of young Cuban, South African and Angolan men at the front.    * Africana *  *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book   – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days On capture, British officers and men were routinely told by the Germans 'For you the war is over'. Nothing could be further from the truth. British Prisoners of War merely exchanged one barbed-wire battleground for another. In the camps the war was eternal. There was the war against the German military, fought with everything from taunting humour to outright sabotage, with a literal spanner put in the works of the factories and salt mines prisoners were forced to slave in. British PoWs also fought a valiant war against the conditions in which they were mired. They battled starvation, disease, Prussian cruelties, boredom, and their own inner demons. And, of course, they escaped. Then escaped again. No less than 29 officers at Holzminden camp in burrowed their way out via a tunnel (dug with a chisel and trowel) in the Great Escape of the Great War. It was war with heart-breaking consequences: more than PoWs died, many of them murdered, to be buried in shallow unmarked graves. Using contemporary records - from prisoners' diaries to letters home to poetry - John Lewis-Stempel reveals the death, life and, above all, the glory of Britain's warriors behind the wire. For it was in the PoW camps, far from the blasted trenches, that the true spirit of the Tommy was exemplified. Features Summary The War Behind the Wire is the new book by the acclaimed author of Six Weeks which depicted the extraordinary story of British junior officers in the First World War in such harrowing detail... Originally published in 1960 in German as "Der Gelbe Stern", this landmark book was one of the first comprehensive photographic accounts of the Holocaust. During the 1950s, researchers in Washington, D.C. and London pored over more than 1,500 tons of photographs and documents seized after World War II. In 1960 Gerhard Schoenberner gathered some 200 photographs from the newly uncovered material, most of them taken by Nazis to chronicle their war against the Jews. Schoenberner named the book after the yellow badge that the Nazis forced the persecuted Jews to wear. With its comprehensive, authoritative presentation of visual and textual evidence, much of which had not yet not been seen before, The Yellow Star shocked the German population and introduced the world to many haunting images. The book endures as one of the most important documentary accounts of the Holocaust, reprinted in many German editions and published in eight languages. The photographs are accompanied by extracts from Nazi and German documents-laws, decrees, and other Reich memoranda, field reports from SS officers and concentration camp directors, newspaper editorials, and other writings. Schoenberner also provides detailed captions to the photographs. Organized chronologically, the book follows the growing scope and terror of the Holocaust, from the first anti-Jewish laws and Kristallnacht to ghetto uprisings and the Final Solution, culminating in the liberation of the death death camps. Each chapter has a narrative introduction by the author. While remaining true to the author's original concept, this new edition is a completely fresh presentation of the photographs and documents, with several enhancements. Schoenberner has added new photographs, replaced others, updated the captions and commentary when necessary, and updated and expanded the bibliography. Even if anti-Semitism were not on the rise in today's world, The Yellow Star would still be an essential book. In photograph after photograph, page after page, the Shoah unfolds as inexorable horror-captured with resonance that remains unequaled. First English edition published 1969 by Corgi. The book has been incorrectly bound (pic) but the cover and spine are good. Including a softcover copy of Michael Elkin's "Forged in Fury." Tracked postage is R50.00.

Dust jacket price clipped, some closed chips. Black cloth with gilt titling on spine. Map end papers. Photographs on plates. 255 pages clean and tight. Size: 8vo. The Siege of Tobruk lasted longer than the Siege of Mafeking. This fly-blown, dust-ridden Lybian port was the only harbour between Bengazi and Alexandria and became crucial as the only stumbling-block preventing Rommel's sweep forward to the Nile. The centre of a shuttlecock war Tobruk was captured by Wavell in 1940, became a beleaguered fortress for 242 days until its garrison was relieved in November 1941 by Auchinleck. Churchill and his War Cabinet in Whitehall with a fine sense of unreality ordered that " Tobruk must be held to the death." It was. The Australians under Major General Morshead fought like tigers, but a year later another garrison of 30,000 men in Tobruk commanded by Major General Klopper surrendered to Rommel in twenty-four hours. Why? There were rumours of high-ranking officers on Klopper's staff surrendering to Rommel blind drunk, of native African troops pillaging the rum stores and being shot out of hand by their captors, and of Company Commanders deserting their men... a Court of Enquiry was held in Cairo but its findings remain secret. Now, after seventeen years, Anthony Heckstall-Smith who was himself a Flotilla Officer of the "A" Lighters which victualled the garrison at fantastic cost in men and ships, has sifted evidence from officers of all units involved-Australian, South African, German and British-in order to write a controversial and thrilling story of men in battle.

In 2012  the South African Army celebrated its 100th birthday. What started out as a small, ill-equipped organisation grew into the most powerful army on the continent by the 1980s. Springboks, Troepies and Cadres tells the story of the SA army in telling the stories of the men who shaped it. A divergent group of soldiers, from general officers to ordinary foot soldiers, tells of the tragedies and triumphs of the battles they took part in. Their first-hand accounts vividly bring home the realities of being a soldier, while some of the officers divulge and discuss military strategy. The book is divided into four eras - World War I, World War II, the Border War and the post-1994 era. Historical battles, including Delville Wood (World War I) and El Alamein (World War II), come alive. The soldiers' stories have recurring themes: Through the army's entire history there was as an emphasis on keeping casualties to a minimum and a military ethos that glorified effectiveness rather than sacrifice. The author also takes a hard look at the state of the SA army in 2012 and the assortment of challenges it faces - from a lack of resources to racial tension and poor discipline. Yet, for the most part, these stories of the army offer a gripping and inspirational historical record. Paperback, 220 pages
