Mandela 1 Kilogram Silver Currently trading at R27,000.00. Mintage Worldwide: 5,000 The Mandela Kilogram medallion is extremely unique and one of its kind. The 1 Kilogram Silver Mandela, which is the 5th coin in the world, bears the signature of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was incarcerated on Robben Island for 18 years and for that reason the Mint of Norway have minted a 1 kilogram silver medallion in order to commemorate the sacrifice which Nelson Mandela made for democracy in South Africa. This is the first time that Nelson Mandela has been immortalised on a 1 kilogram silver medallion. The obverse (front) of this exquisite collectable portrays the bust of Nelson Mandela which has been gold plated, and which has never been done before. The words Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela are inscribed around the outside and the now famous phrase “A Long Walk To Freedom” is inscribed next to Nelson Mandela’s bust. The obverse (back) of this highly sought after medallion portrays an image of Robben Island which is also gold plated, as well as the words Robben Island. The years that Nelson Mandela spent incarcerated on Robben Island are inscribed at the bottom. The signature of Nelson Mandela appears between the 1964 and 1982.

The mint of Norway were commissioned in 2008, to mint 900 x 2 ounce and 90 x ½ kilo gold Nelson Mandela 90’th birthday medallions in order to commemorate the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela. 1800 x 1 ounce, 90th birthday gold medallions were minted of which 900 sets were compiled consisting of the 1 ounce gold 90th birthday gold medallion and a 1 ounce sterling silver 90th birthday medallion, this set is referred to as the 90th birthday silver twin set. 900 sets consisting of the 1 ounce gold Nelson Mandela 90th birthday medallion and a half ounce platinum Nelson Mandela 90th birthday medallion have also been compiled. This is the first time ever that Nelson Mandela's bust has been portrayed in Platinum. 27 x ½ kilogram platinum Nelson Mandela 90th birthday medallions have also been minted. The reason that 27 of these medallions were minted is to signify the 27 years that Nelson Mandela spent incarcerated on Robben Island. This is the first time that a 2 ounce gold medallion as well as a half kilogram gold medallion have been minted which portray the bust of Nelson Mandela. The obverse of the medallion depicts the bust of Nelson Mandela and the inscription “A Long Walk To Freedom”, as well as the year 2008. The reverse chronologically captures the milestones of Nelson Mandela’s life, which reads: Born Umtata 1918; 1964 Rivonia trial; Robben Island 1964-1990; 1993 Nobel Peace Prize; Democratically elected government 1994 and 1994-1999 State President.

1965-66 Rhodesian One Year Independence Anniversary Medallion In 1966 medallions were struck in platinum and gold in 2 different sizes to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the independence of Rhodesia. Apparently the platinum sets (14 sets in total) were given to the signories of the UDI Articles. What makes this particular medallion so unusual is it is made from bronze. It was either struck as a trial before the precious metals were used, or else it was struck unofficially by someone at the mint. On the reverse it says "18 ct" which suggests it was struck with the same dies used to make the actual gold medallions.  Someone gold plated the medallion and put a mount on. Much of the gold plating is gone. It measures approx. 39.5 mm in diameter and weighs 25 grams.    Shipping within South Africa: Free shipping within South Africa.
