"Makonde art can be subdivided into different areas. The Makonde traditionally carve household objects, figures and masks. After the 1930s, the Portuguese colonizers and other missionaries arrived at theMakonde plateau. They immediately showed great interest and fascination for the Makonde wood carvings and began to order different pieces, from religious to political "eminences." The Makonde sculptors, after noticing such interest, decided to carve the new pieces using pau-preto (ebony wood, Diospyros ebenum) and pau-rosa (Swartzia spp.) instead of the soft and non long-lasting wood they had used before. This first contact with the Western culture can be considered to be the first introduction of the classical European style into the traditional Makonde style.Since the 1950s years the socalled Modern Makonde Art has been developed. An essential step was the turning to abstract figures, mostly spirits,Shetani, that play a special role. This shetani style originated in the early 1950s by master carverSamaki Likankoa, whose patronMohamed Peera, an art curator in Tanzania played an instrumental and decisive role in influencing the modern makonde art movement. Some Makonde sculptors, the best known of whom isGeorge Lugwani, have embraced fully abstract style of carving without discernible figures. Makonde are also part of the important contemporary artists of Africa today. The most internationally acknowledged such artist wasGeorge Lilanga. The ex libris of ritual Makonde art are the unique Mapiko masks (singular: Lipiko), which have been used in coming-of-age rituals since before contact was made with missionaries, in the 19th century. These masks are painstakingly carved from a single block of light wood (usually 'sumaumeira brava') and may represent spirits ('shetani'), ancestors, or living characters (real or idealized). The dancer wears them so that he sees through the mask's mouth and the mask faces straight when he bends forward."Price: R550.00Edition: First editionPublished: 1974Publishers: HamlynISBN: 0600361713Condition: Hardcover in good condition, with minor shelf wear and discolouration on the corners of the cover, and top and bottom of the spine. An introduction by curator Christine Kondoleon describes the geographic range, stylistic progression and technical development of art in the classical world, and a second essay briefly relates tales of conservation and the provenance of some of the featured objects. In the main body of the book, the highlighted artworks are grouped into five broad themes: Myth and Religion, Heroes and Warriors, Love and Loss, Daily Life and Beasts and Beauties. Celebrated mosaics, statues and vases share the stage with less familiar jewelry, coins and glassware, with each piece accompanied by a concise discussion of its artistic creation and cultural context. Both common themes and distinctions emerge in cross-cultural discussions of topics such as war and politics, commemoration of the dead, sports and entertainment and the human form, providing rich insight into the astonishing civilizations that produced and used these fascinating objects so many centuries ago. Unabridged value reproduction of THE PRINCE, by Niccolo Machiavelli and translated by N. H. Thomson for a Harvard series, is game theory from the year 1513. THE PRINCE is divided into 26 chapters covering all the steps of power, be it in the office or across continents. Topics include various forms of power (mixed, heredity), how power is acquired (with help, through criminal acts), and important aspects of power (bearing, flatters, secretaries). No student of influence should be without this historic philosophy book on leadership. Amazon.com Review When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccol² Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. This book-the fourth volume in the "MoMA Design Series," featuring works in the Museum's extraordinary design collection-explores this legacy, tracing the growth of British design from the early stages of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century to the Millennium Dome and beyond. In its more than 200-year scope, "British Design" explores a variety of design products and movements, such as Wedgwood pottery, the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes of World War II, the Mini car and Dyson vacuum cleaner, the "Cool Britannia" cultural explosion in the late 1990s and British designers' take on the digital devices that define entertainment and communication in the early twenty-first century. An introduction by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, provides an overview of design culture in Britain; an essay and timeline by Hugh Aldersey-Williams, former design critic for "The New Statesman" and author of "The Most Beautiful Molecule" and "New American," illuminate the masterpieces of modern British design superbly reproduced in the volume's plate section. A daring story of imprisonment and escape under the Nazi regime and a moving and engrossing symbol of resilience and integrity. by Lene Fogelberg by Leslie Gilbert-Lurie by Ali Eteraz by John Carlin by Isabella Leitner by John Hoskison by Doc Hendley by Melissa Cistaro by Cathy Glass by Erin Seidemann by Alan Parks by Abraham Bolden by Domingo Martinez by Richard Dawkins by Trudi Kanter by Jacky Donovan by Armstrong Diane by Alberto Granado 9781628723762 Paperback Jean Hlion was a noted French modernist painter and author. He was a member of the Free French Forces during World War II. His work later influenced Roy Lichtenstein, Nell Blaine, and Leland Bell. He died in 1987. Deborah M. Rosenthal, consulting editor for the Artists & Art series, is a New York painter and writer. She is a professor of art in the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Rider University. Jacqueline Hlion, the widow of the painter, lives in Paris. Editorial Reviews From the Publisher "A meticulously observed description of the lives of French POWs as virtual slaves of the Third Reich, with vivid delineations of both captors and captives." --The Wall Street Journal John Ashbery Jean Hlion was one of France's leading modernist painters, even before his capture by the Germans in 1940 when he was 33. His account of his adventures in captivity is both terrifying and funny (one of his tormentors was the appropriately-names Kommandofuhrer Jurk), somewhat in the Vein of Tarantino's film Inglorious Basterds. A best-seller after it was published in America while the war was still raging, it has remained for many, including Helion's legions of admirers in both France and the United States, a one-of-a-kind classic. It's wonderful to have it back in print again. The Wall Street Journal The French armistice with the Third Reich, signed by Vichy's aging Marshal Ptain on June 22, 1940, stipulated the following: "The French armed forces in the territory to be occupied by Germany are to be hastily withdrawn into the territory not to be occupied, and be discharged." No wonder, then, that hundreds of thousands of exhausted French soldiers allowed themselves to be encircled by German troops and held in barbed-wire enclosures pending their expected demobilization. Most believed they would be going home. The German high command had a different agenda. Hitler, who would break his pact with Stalin and invade the Soviet Union within a year of signing the Vichy agreement, planned to replace the German manpower needed for the Russian front with the labor of the surrendered French army. Trains crammed with prisoners would soon make the four-day journey to hastily constructed barracks at dozens of sites near the former Polish border. Such was the fate of close to a million and a half French prisoners of war, most of whom would not see their home again for five years; 25,000 would never return. In New York, in 1943, a detailed eyewitness account of the conditions in German POW camps was published by a French escapee, Jean Hlion (1904-87). Hlion was by then an internationally known painter who had been living in New York at the outbreak of World War II. He returned to France for military service, only to be part of the debacle that followed the German invasion. At the request of E.P. Dutton publishers, he set down his experience in "They Shall Not Have Me," a meticulously observed description of the lives of French POWs as virtual slaves of the Third Reich, with vivid delineations of both captors and captives. Written in English and never published in France, the book became a best seller, and its author found himself in demand for lectures and interviews, trying, as he said, to tell Americans what it was like to be hungry, devoured by lice, worked to the bone, and harassed and sometimes beaten by armed guards. Long a cult classic sought out by artist-admirers of Hlion, "They Shall Not Have Me" has now been reissued in Arcade's Artists and Art series, with an illuminating introduction by the artist Deborah Rosenthal. In an afterword, Hlion's widow, Jacqueline, has filled in information about those who helped in her husband's escape, members of a Resistance network whose identities he could not reveal at the time. Hlion arrived in France in 1940 in time to experience the military's disarray as French troops, believing they were to make a stand along the Loire, marched on clogged roads under strafing by German planes. Instead came the humiliating news of the armistice. Hlion was among the surrendered French soldiers shipped to a prison camp in Pomerania, near the Baltic Sea, from which he was sent to a local estate as a laborer. There the prisoners slept on lice-infested straw, subsisted on thin soup and hard bread, and spent the day digging and gathering potatoes; the temperatures were freezing, and adequate footwear and clothing were lacking. The Last Man is Mary Shelley's apocalyptic fantasy of the end of human civilisation. Set in the late twenty-first century, the novel unfolds a sombre and pessimistic vision of mankind confronting inevitable destruction. Interwoven with her futuristic theme, Mary Shelley incorporates idealised portraits of Shelley and Byron, yet rejects Romanticism and its faith in art and nature. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) was the only daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, author of Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and the radical philosopher William Godwin. Her mother died ten days after her birth and the young child was educated through contact with her father's intellectual circle and her own reading. She met Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1812; they eloped in July 1814. In the summer of 1816 she began her first and most famous novel, Frankenstein. Three of her children died in early infancy and in 1822 her husband was drowned. Mary returned to England with her surviving son and wrote novels, short stories and accounts of her travels; she was the first editor of P.B.Shelley's poetry and verse. Due to Book size Postage and Packaging is R40  "A powerful, deeply affecting career summation, and another great book from an indisputable master practitioner of the art" David Goldblatt: Photographs Hasselblad Award 2006 Published by Hatje Cantz. Introduction by Gunilla Knape. Text by Michael Godby., 2007 Book Description: Sweden / Germany: Hasselblad / Hatje Cantz, 2007 Hardcover. First edition, 2006. 84 pages with 4 gatefolds; 45 full-page, color photographic plates; 12 x 11 inches. Text in English. When David Goldblatt received the world-renowned Hasselblad Award in 2006, he had been making photographs of the South African landscape and culture for more than 50 years. Born in 1930 in a gold-mining town near Johannesburg, his parents were Jewish refugees from Lithuania, and they raised him with an emphasis on tolerance and antiracism. In 1975, at the height of apartheid, Goldblatt explored white nationalist culture in Some Afrikaners Photographed, and in the 80s he observed workers on the Kwandebele-Pretoria bus, many of whom traveled eight hours every day to work and back. His late-90s solo show at New York's Museum of Modern Art focused on architectural work, and showed off Goldblatt's uncanny ability to discover a society through its buildings and landscapes. His photographs of architectural structures revealed the ways that ideology had defined his home country's landscape. Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography In 2006 David Goldblatt was presented with this prestigious award in Sweden, the 26th recipient since its inception in 1980. From the Hasselblad press release: David Goldblats work is a life long observation of the social and political developments within South African society. He has been concerned to explore the relationship between individual subjects and the structures within which they live. His interest in the violent history of his country, and his awareness of the symbolic significance of architecture, form an extraordinary statement both personal and socio-political. Photography, in the words of David Goldblatt, reveals something of the subtlety and ambiguity of our shifting and frequently contradictory perceptions of reality. The reason why the jury has chosen Golblatt for the Hasselblad award is because Goldblatts photographs are acute in historical and political perception. They provide a sense of the texture of daily life, and an important piece of missing information regarding life under apartheid in South Africa.   Book condition as new, clean, no sign of wear, pristine collectable   Due to Book size Postage and Packaging is R40
