It enables readers to better understand the highlights of his life by placing them in a context that grounds them in areas of less brightness. The chronology lists the significant events of his life, the introductory essay provides an overview of his philosophical thought and his belief that philosophy was the purpose of his life, and the more than dictionary entries review Schopenhauers key ideas, concepts, doctrines, and the philosophical figures related to his thought. A comprehensive bibliography provides a listing of the most frequently cited German collected editions of Schopenhauers work, significant German primary source materials, English translations of Schopenhauers books, and English-language collections of essays drawn from Schopenhauers Oeuvre. This engaging work opens the door to a better understanding of Schopenhauers philosophy for readers of all levels.  Books and wrappers in very good condition - Previously belonged to Stuart Hendry, Longtime History Master at Pretoria Boys High and all 4 have his signature and bookplate inside - Stunning wrappers now in removable transparent sleeves.  >>>    Cassell and Company, Ltd., London, First edition, first printing. This is a jacketed, British first edition set of Churchill's sweeping history and last great work. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. The work itself was two decades in the making. The Churchillian conceptions that underpinned it were lifelong. The cultural commonality and vitality of English-speaking peoples animated Churchill throughout his life, from his Victorian youth in an ascendant British Empire to his twilight in the midst of the American century. Churchill began A History of the English-Speaking Peoples in the 1930s, completing a draft of "about half a million words" which was set aside when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in September 1939. The work was fittingly interrupted by an unprecedented alliance among the English-speaking peoples during the Second World War - an alliance Churchill personally did much to cultivate, cement, and sustain. The interruption continued as Churchill bent his literary efforts to his six-volume history, The Second World War, and then his remaining political energies to his second and final premiership from 1951-1955. This first edition is regarded as one of the most beautiful productions of Churchill's works, with tall red volumes and striking, illustrated dust jackets.     *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book   – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

Excerpt from Document Showing the Testimony Given Before the Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of the State of Missouri, on the Trial of Joseph Smith, Jr., And Others, for High Treason, and Other Crimes Against That State: February 15, 1841 As regards the affair at 'de Witt, I know little personally; but I heard Mr. S. Rigdon say they had gone down to De Witt, where it was said a mob had collected to wage war upon the Mormons residing in Carroll county; and that Joseph Smith, jr., with his friends, went down to De Witt to give aid and help to, his brethren. The company, as I presume, were armed. They returned armed. Hiram Sm'nh and George W. Robinson were in the company. 'amasa Lyman went to seewhat was going on. He heard these persons say they were in Hinkle's camp (at De Witt) several days. When the Mormons returned from De Witt, it/was rumored that a mob was col leeting in Daviess county. Joseph Smith, ir., the Sunday, before the late disturbances in'daviess, at a church meeting, gave notice that he wished the whole county collected on the next day (monday) at Far West. He declared (on Sunday or Monday - rl don't recollect which) that all who did not take up arms in defence of the Mormons of Daviess. Should be consid ered as tories, and should take their exit from the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 38 ONE among the events which have greatly affected the development of Christianity was the religious movement of the sixteenth century called Protestantism. Millions of Christians within a'short period of time separated themselves from what they had been taught to believe was the Christian Church. It is unnatural, as it is unchristian, that men who have a common nature and a common destiny, and who acknowledge the same Mediator and Saviour, should stand towards each other in hostile attitude. All is not right where such a state of things exists. To produce such results there must have been error somewhere, and guilt too. For humanity means common brotherhood. Truth is one. And Christianity is, in the highest sense of the words, Love and Truth. These disagreeable facts are becoming more and more apparent, and people are becoming more and more convinced of these primary truths. Who knows? perhaps the time has come when, if men would consider impartially the causes which have brought about the deplorable religious dissensions and divisions existing among Christians, a movement would set in on all sides towards unity, and the prayer of Christ that "all who believe in him might be made perfect in unity" would find its fulfilment. This is our hope. To contribute to this result we labor. It is in the spirit of impartiality and charity that the investigation of this subject should be pursued.
