It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Situated between the Hottentots Holland Mountains and the Breede River, the Overberg is an important agricultural region and a popular holiday destination for tourists and nature lovers who delight in the beauty of its mountainous landscape, abundant plant species and long sandy beaches. But this area also has a rich history going back thousands of years, when the indigenous Khoi people originally thrived there, before the first European settlers arrived to leave their own indelible imprint on the culture, architecture and character of the region. This book provides a detailed account of this past by pointing out the many places, buildings, events and personalities that have made the Overberg the diverse and unique place that it is today. The Overberg has been a home or point of interest for explorers, innovators, artists and writers, for figures as varied as Bartholomew Diaz, Olof Bergh, Hendrik Verwoerd, Gregoire Boonzaier, Audrey Blignault and Breyten Breytenbach. Some of South Africa's oldest towns, houses and missionary stations can be found here, and its treacherous coastline has been the cause of hundreds of shipwrecks for centuries. Enlivened by historical and current photographs and informative side panels, this book is a collector's item. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days "This comprehensive photographic documentation of Roman villas and palaces not only presents images of the grand houses of the popes and the nobles of the city, but also sets them in their historical framework. The brilliant photographs capture the atmosphere of the buildings in their full grandeur and exquisiteness. They lead readers past magnificently decorated facades and guide them through festively decorated halls and artfully arranged gardens. The text makes clear just how closely the history of the famed dynasties--the Borgheses, Farneses, Colonnas, Corsinis and other old families--is inter-twined with their ancestral seats, and how for centuries the higher Roman nobility designed their palaces in the City of Cities as fitting reflections of their own glory. This competition for the most magnificent residence led to the construction of many of the city's most famous buildings, including the palaces on the Capitol, the Palazzo Farnese, the Villa Borghese, the Quirinal and others, which still today are among the unmistakable hallmarks of the incomparable city of Rome. The section on landownership treats the history and ownership of the manors, the large medieval inns, and the estates created from the 16th century onwards; that on religious history provides a general chronological introduction to religious life in the city, and detailed accounts of the history and buildings of all the Christian denominations and other Faiths. Introduction by Gunilla Knape. Text by Michael Godby., 2007 Book Description: Sweden / Germany: Hasselblad / Hatje Cantz, 2007 Hardcover. First edition, 2006. 84 pages with 4 gatefolds; 45 full-page, color photographic plates; 12 x 11 inches. Text in English. When David Goldblatt received the world-renowned Hasselblad Award in 2006, he had been making photographs of the South African landscape and culture for more than 50 years. Born in 1930 in a gold-mining town near Johannesburg, his parents were Jewish refugees from Lithuania, and they raised him with an emphasis on tolerance and antiracism. In 1975, at the height of apartheid, Goldblatt explored white nationalist culture in Some Afrikaners Photographed, and in the 80s he observed workers on the Kwandebele-Pretoria bus, many of whom traveled eight hours every day to work and back. His late-90s solo show at New York's Museum of Modern Art focused on architectural work, and showed off Goldblatt's uncanny ability to discover a society through its buildings and landscapes. His photographs of architectural structures revealed the ways that ideology had defined his home country's landscape. Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography In 2006 David Goldblatt was presented with this prestigious award in Sweden, the 26th recipient since its inception in 1980. From the Hasselblad press release: David Goldblats work is a life long observation of the social and political developments within South African society. He has been concerned to explore the relationship between individual subjects and the structures within which they live. His interest in the violent history of his country, and his awareness of the symbolic significance of architecture, form an extraordinary statement both personal and socio-political. Photography, in the words of David Goldblatt, reveals something of the subtlety and ambiguity of our shifting and frequently contradictory perceptions of reality. The reason why the jury has chosen Golblatt for the Hasselblad award is because Goldblatts photographs are acute in historical and political perception. They provide a sense of the texture of daily life, and an important piece of missing information regarding life under apartheid in South Africa.   Book condition as new, clean, no sign of wear, pristine collectable   Due to Book size Postage and Packaging is R40

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days Of necessity, historians of the late Middle Ages have to rely on an eclectic mix of sources, ranging from the few remaining medieval buildings, monuments, illuminated manuscripts and miscellaneous artefacts, to a substantial but often uncatalogued body of documentary material, much of it born of the medieval administrator's penchant for record keeping. Exploring this evidence requires skills in lateral thinking and interpretation - qualities which are manifested in this volume. Employing the copious legal records kept by the English Crown, one essay reveals the thinking behind exceptions to pardons sold by successive kings, while another, using clerical taxation returns, adds colour to contemporary criticism of friars for betraying their vows of poverty. Case studies of the registers of two hospitals, one in London the other in Canterbury, lead to insights into the relations of their administrators with civic and spiritual authorities. A textual dissection of the epilogues in William Caxton's early printed works focuses on the universal desire for commemoration. Other essays about royal livery collars and the English coinage are nourished by material remains, and where contemporary records fail to survive, as in the listing of burials in parish churches, notes kept by sixteenth-century heralds and antiquaries provide clues for novel identifications. The book-ends are exemplars of the historian's craft: the one, taking as its starting point the will of Ralph, Lord Cromwell, explores in forensic detail how his executors coped with their enormous task in a time of civil war; the other, by examining research into the economy of fifteenth-century England undertaken since the 1880s, provides an over-view which scholars of the period will find invaluable. Contributors: Martin Allen, Christopher Dyer, David Harry, Susanne Jenks, Maureen Jurkowski, Simon Payling, Euan Roger, Christian Steer, Sheila Sweetinburgh, Matthew Ward. Cities are not only made of buildings and roads, but they are also constructed through popular imagination and memory as evidenced in this collection of oral and visual histories drawn from the people who live, work, and creatively express themselves in Cape Town, South Africa. The collected works move beyond apartheid history to analyze the reflective ways in which people are coming to terms with that history through memory, work, performance, and memorialization. "The overriding strength of this book is that it places people—ordinary people—at the centre of memory, at the centre of historical and contemporary experience, and thus at the centre of reimagining and owning the city of Cape Town. It is as they speak—what they choose to say, what they choose to remain silent about—that we become aware of the possibilities of the city, if it really did embrace all its people, in all of their diversity." —Mike van Graan, from the foreword.
