Please select your desired pot from the drop down list above. Screen colour may not exactly match the actual colour of the pot, this is unavoidable. Size may differ slightly from stated. Made in South Africa Willow Potteries is a South African Bonsai pottery specializing in high quality handmade ceramics. Willow potteries strives to create new and interesting pot shapes every year to keep it fresh. Their glazes are also one of their signatures being vibrant and different. Quality is very important. Why select these pots? These pots are available in a wide variety of shapes. They are ideal for small bonsai, succulents or accent plantings. Available in an exciting range of colours which are easily matched up with a bonsai tree; including blues, greens and browns. Selecting a glaze colour When choosing a pot of a certain colour, usually one takes into consideration the feature of the tree which you wish to enhance and then select a complementary colour to that feature. A complementary colour is the colour opposite another on the colour wheel. For example the pink flowers of a Cape May or a pink Chinese Snow Rose will be best shown off if the tree is planted in a green pot as the flowers are the most attractive feature of the tree and green is the complementary colour to pink. Fruit is emphasized by using the complementary colour to that of the fruit. So the orange berries of a firethorn bonsai tree will be best shown off when planted in a blue container. Always keep in mind that the most important item is the tree and the pot must be subordinate to it. To read more about choosing a pot read this helpful guide.

What is it? Akadama is a granular volcanic clay-like (although it is not clay) mineral which occurs naturally in Japan. It has been extensively used by Japanese gardeners and bonsai artists for many centuries as a growing medium for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. It is mined from the surface of the ground, after which it is graded and packaged. Unlike LECA it is not fired at high temperatures however when it is mined from greater depths it tends to be harder or it might be slightly baked. It has many unique qualities, one of which is that when it is wet it has a darker colour so indicates when watering is needed  Akadama is unique as a growing medium and is sought after due to its ability for water retention and nutrients due to its high CEC value. However at the same time it provides porosity and free drainage. How to use? Akadama can be combined with other elements such as crushed stone, composted bark, peat, or for best effect use  pumice. Here are a few recipes from leading international bonsai practitioners: Boon Manakitivipart 1 part pumice, 1 part lava, 1 part akadama, 1 handful decomposed granite and 1 handful horticultural charcoal. Bjorn Bjorholm Akadama, lava rock, and pumice. Use a 1:1:1 ratio respectively for conifers and a 2:1:1 ratio respectively for deciduous and broadleaf evergreen species. Peter Tea 2 parts akadama, 1 part hyuga (Japanese pumice) and 1 part coarse river sand.  Bag Contents Akadama,  Double Red Line Brand Sizes Available Small (1~5mm) Suited to mame, shohin and general bonsai growing mixes. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 10L bucket. Medium (5~10mm) Suitable for drainage layers and for medium to large bonsai. Available in 2L bag, 5L bag and 10L bucket.

These mini sized bonsai scissors are designed ideally for use on small trees such as mame and shohin. Normal scissors often become cumbersome when working on smaller trees and they may in fact damage twigs and branches if extreme care is not taken. Although small in size these mini sized scissors do not sacrifice comfort of handling in any way. Their handles are carefully crafted so holding them is much easier than you might imagine. The blade length is 40mm. As with all our Kaneshin tools, these mini bonsai scissors are handmade by highly skilled Japanese craftsmen. Each tool is boxed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
