(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Existing data on income and growth in sub-Saharan African countries are unreliable, even seriously misleading. The author provides the first systematic analysis of the level, direction and causes of the errors, looking at a range of African countries, from Benin to Zambia, including South Africa. He then describes why these errors matter. What seem like dry numbers actually have a huge impact on the welfare of these developing countries. Economic growth rate estimates and per-capita income statistics are vital for local governments and for economic aid. Jerven's research suggests that data supplied by national records and statistical offices substantially misstate the actual situation. As a result, scarce economic aid is misapplied, policymakers' attempts to improve their citizens' lives are frustrated, and donors have no accurate sense of the impact of their aid. Jerven explains what can and should be done to improve the guidelines for both the production and use of statistics. Format:paperback Pages:208

Those with any interest in the First World War will have have heard of the planes most associated with that conflict - the legendary Sopwith Camel and Royal Aircraft Factory's S.E.5a, which are often called the "Spitfire" and "Hurricane" of the Great War. Aviation enthusiasts might even know of the Camel's predecessors, the Sopwith Pup or the Triplane. But what of the many other planes that saw active service in the war? This is the story of those armed aeroplanes whose names few people can recall, the 'Forgotten Fighters' of the First World War, including the pusher 'gunbuses' of the early war years, the strange 'pulpit' design of the B.E.9, the desperate conversions of reconnaissance machines that were never intended to be armed, and those which were thought too tricky for the average pilot to handle. It is also the story of the brave men who flew these machines, fighting, and too often dying, for a cause they believed in. Some of these aeroplanes only served in small numbers and others in areas away from the main battle on the Western Front, but all made a vital contribution to the winning of the war. And these lost but iconic fighter aircraft, and the brave young men who flew them, deserve to be remembered just as much as the more famous aces in their legendary machines. This is their story. Homes Aged 13, Joan Ashby drew up a list of How to Become a Successful Writer: 1. Do not waste time2. Ignore Eleanor Ashby* when she tells me I need friends [*J.A.'s mother]3. Read great literature every day4. Write every day5. Rewrite every day6. Avoid crushes and love7. Do not entertain any offer of marriage8. Never ever have children9. Never allow anyone to get in my way A decade later her short stories take the literary world by storm. But her failure to fulfil numbers 6 and 7 gets in the way, closely followed by number 8 (twice); some years down the road, she finds herself living a life very different from the one she had envisioned. She finally gets back on track with numbers 4 and 5 and her much-anticipated first novel is finally written - and it's a masterpiece, she just knows it. But as she is poised to reclaim the spotlight, a betrayal of Shakespearean proportions is lurking around the corner... An audacious and dazzling novel, epic in scope but intimate in its portrayal of one woman's triumphs and catastrophes. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of The Who from their golden era with the ultimate line-up of Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon. Indeed, all the concert photos within come from the band's last two years of gigs with the inimitable Keith Moon and are from the archive of former Record Mirror photographer Steve Emberton. With the exception of a handful they have all been scanned from the original negatives, specifically for this book and have never been published before. Having spent most of '74 away from the stage whilst working on the film Tommy, the band returned to touring in October '75 in support of their then latest album, The Who By Numbers that also spawned the hit single 'Squeeze Box'. The eleven UK concerts culminated with three shows at Wembley's Empire Pool and Steve Emberton was there at two of them. The following year the band continued to tour in promotion of The Who By Numbers, albeit mainly in America. However they performed three UK concerts in early summer - all outdoor events at football grounds. The first in London at Charlton Athletic's The Valley, went down in Who history as it resulted in the band being declared the loudest in the world as recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. This was followed by a gig at Celtic Park in Glasgow. Steve Emberton was there again for the third and final gig at The Vetch Field in Swansea. It would prove to be the last paid gig the band performed to a UK audience with Keith Moon in the band and Steve captured it. In addition to this Steve also took photos of both Keith Moon and John Entwistle outside of the gig environment and this collection includes candid photos of the Who's rhythm section in more relaxed settings with the ones of Entwistle taken in West London in November '76 and with his father in August '77 at Ramport Studios. The Keith Moon shots were taken in October or November '77 at Chrysalis Records. Completing the book is a foreword by Tony Klinger, author of the Who tome, Twilight Of The Gods and co-producer of The Kids Are Alright film. Features Summary Visions of The Who is a beautifully presented collection of previously unpublished photos of the original Who by Record Mirror's Steve Emberton. SMITH'S SEA FISHES, Number Five (5) of the Collectors Edition of Fifty (5O), leather-bound, first edition, first impression, 1986, J.B.L.Smith Institute of Ichthycology, Grahamstown, gilt edging to pages, illustrated, AS NEW The forerunner of this book was 'Sea Fishes of Southern Africa', first published in 1949. The attractive feature of the low number (5), apart from the unusually low number (5O) in the edition, is that the book (probably) was not offered on public placement, as with later numbers (11-50) of an limited edition                                                                                                         The standard work in encyclopedia format.

Our accommodation is limited and this always dictates the number of trainees at any single moment that we can intake
