About the product Number 206 of an edition limited to 510 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1825 printing by W. Bridekirk. 8vo; original brown rexine gilt; pp. (vi) + 24. Regular browning throughout. Very good condition. (SABIB 4, p. 317 [1st and 2nd printings])"It is interesting, though not surprising, to find that in 1824, the year when, in spite of all the efforts of Pringle and Greig, Lord Charles Somerset succeeded in suppressing the free press in Cape Town, an attempt was made, sponsored by the same circle of independent-minded citizens, to found a South African Literary Society. Sixty-one citizens of distinction became members, and Thomas Pringle was appointed temporary secretary. It was essential to have the approval of the Governor, however, so Somerset was respectfully requested to become Patron of the Society. Ever suspicious of anything inaugurated by the'rebel'Pringle, Somerset began by refusing that honour, and proceeded to forbid the establishment of the Society, on the grounds that it'might have a tendency to produce political discussion'. The very rare contemporary documents dealing with this episode are now re-published after the lapse of 140 years. They are of great historical interest, particularly for the contrast they reveal between the alert-minded members who sought to pursue cultural activities, and the despotic and ultra-conservative Governor." Papers of the South African Literary Society, 1824 (Thomas (secretary) Pringle)

John Mackenzie South African Missionary and Statesman - W. Douglas - Negro University Press - 1969 - 564pp, Hard cover in very good, clean and tight condition. One of the most influential missionaries in South Africa. Brought up in a devout Church of Scotland family in northeastern Scotland, he volunteered for service with the LMS in 1855 and in 1858 was sent to South Africa. He served at Kuruman and at Shoshong among the Tswana peoples. Returning from furlough in 1871, he became tutor in the school for teachers and evangelists, first at Shoshong then at Kuruman. The Tswana peoples were threatened with the loss of their land to Afrikaners of the Transvaal or to speculators from the Cape. Mackenzie became a firm advocate of direct imperial rule of native territories to prevent settler takeover of the land so essential to the integrity of an African people. After a very long and complex struggle against the forces of both the Transvalers and of Cape politicians like Cecil Rhodes, he achieved success when in 1885 the British government declared the present Botswana a British Protectorate and preserved it from white settler occupation. In 1890 Mackenzie left the Tswana and spent his last years as pastor to the Cape Coloured people of Hankey, the last resting place of John Philip.

In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry, 1996-2013 In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry 1996-2013 presents the works of 32 poets and includes some translations from Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, and Xitsonga. This collection follows on from Denis Hirson's 1997 anthology The Lava of This Land: South African Poetry 1960-1996. Today, South African poetry is charged with restlessness, bursting with diversity. Gone is the intense inward focus required to deal with a situation of systematic oppression, the enclosing effort of concentration on a single predicament. While politics and identity continue to be central themes, South African poetry since the late 1990s reveals a richer investigation of ancestors and history, alongside more experimentation with language and translation, and enduring concern with the touchstones of love, loss, memory, and acts of witnessing. The poets include: Jim Pascual Agustin * Gabeba Baderoon * Robert Berold * Vonani Bila * Jeremy Cronin * Ingrid de Kok * Isobel Dixon * Finuala Dowling * Khadija Tracey Heeger * Denis Hirson * Ronelda Kamfer * Keorapetse Kgositsile * Katharine Kilalea * Rustum Kozain * Antjie Krog * David wa Maahlamela * Bongekile Joyce Mbanjwa * Joan Metelerkamp * Kobus Moolman * Isabella Motadinyane * Petra Muller * Gert Vlok Nel * Mxolisi Nyezwa * Karen Press * Mongane Wally Serote * Ari Sitas * Kelwyn Sole * Rosamund Stanford * Toni Stuart * Nathan Trantraal * Marlene van Niekerk * Bulelani Zantsi. [Subject: African Studies, Poetry] About the editor  Denis Hirson was editor of a previous anthology of poetry: The Lava of this Land, South African Poetry 1960-1996 (Northwestern University Press and David Philip, 1997), was co-editor [with Martin Trump] of The Heinemann Book of South African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1994), and the author of an historical survey of South African literature, Worlds in One Country (Jacana 2011). He has also edited two anthologies of South African poetry in French translation, and has done much to promote South African literature in Europe. Denis Hirson is the author of four books of memory: The House Next Door to Africa, I Remember King Kong (the Boxer), We Walk Straight So You Better Get Out the Way, White Scars, a poetry collection, Gardening in the Dark, and a novel, The Dancing and the Death in Lemon Street.   The Law of Succession in South Africa, second edition, introduces LLB students to the general principles of the law of succession within a South African context.  Integrating the common law, statutory law, constitutional perspectives, and the related customary law principles, the text provides thorough and informative coverage of the essential materials in a concise and accessible resource. The content is updated to reflect recent cases and developments such as the Reform of Customary Law of Succession and Regulation of Related Matters Act, 11 of 2009.  The text supports learning and the development of independent academic skills through various pedagogical features which bring an applied, critical and reflective approach to the content. Students will also find useful special features included to encourage independent and critical thinking and to broaden their understanding and perspectives.  An expanded test bank and PowerPoint slide presentation complement the offering, and are available to lecturers to support conceptualisation, enrich teaching and learning, and encourage the development of research skills.  This book is suited as core course material for courses in the law of succession at the undergraduate level of the LLB degree. It may also be a useful resource for post-graduate courses and legal practitioners wishing to clarify new or foundational principles of the field.

We Have Now Begun Our Descent - How To Stop South Africa Losing Its Way - Justice Malala - Jonathan Ball - 2015 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition. 12 February 2015. The South African secret services block the cellphones of journalists covering Parliament. Opposition party members are violently thrown out of the House. President Jacob Zuma –  accused of corruption on a grand scale – laughs uproariously. Where is the country of Nelson Mandela headed? The institutions of democracy are falling apart or being captured by a narrow and deeply corrupt elite built around Zuma. Its infrastructure is collapsing. Its economy cannot provide succor to the eight million who don’t have jobs. Protests over service delivery are on the rise. Does South Africa have the resolve and the leadership to stem the slide? In a devastating, searing, honest paean to his country, renowned political journalist and commentator Justice Malala forces South Africa to come face to face with the country it has become: corrupt, crime-ridden, compromised and its institutions captured by a selfish political elite that is bent on enriching itself at the expense of the increasingly marginalised masses.   In this deeply personal reflection, Malala’s diagnosis is devastating: South Africa is on the brink. He does not stop there. Malala believes that we have the ingredients to turn things around: our lauded Constitution, our wealth of talent, our history of activism and a democratic trajectory that can be used to stop the rot from setting in. But he has a warning: South Africans need to wake up now, or else they will soon find their country has been stolen.
