"SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK COLLECTION" 2007, CONTRIBUTIONS BY DR. RORY BESTER, JODI BRENNER & OTHERS The art collection of the Reserve Bank is regarded as one of the premier corporate collections in the country, with its outstanding strength being landscape art produced between 1900 and 1970. The collection contains a number of historically important works and works by contemporary artists. The collection has its origins in artworks that were accumulated and intended for display in hotels attached to the railway stations in Cape Town and Pretoria. When the state abandoned these hotel plans, the 146 artworks were put up for sale at two much-anticipated auctions in 1954 and 1955.   In the ensuing years the Bank’s eclectic collection has grown to over 700 artworks displayed at the Bank's Head Office, the SARB College, and its branches in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria North.   In 1991 the Bank produced the first art book of the collection’s holdings.  PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE 2007 EDITION HARDCOVER IN BRANDNEW CONDITION, COMPLETE DUSTJACKET IN FINE UNREAD CONDITION

About the product Number 206 of an edition limited to 510 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1825 printing by W. Bridekirk. 8vo; original brown rexine gilt; pp. (vi) + 24. Regular browning throughout. Very good condition. (SABIB 4, p. 317 [1st and 2nd printings])"It is interesting, though not surprising, to find that in 1824, the year when, in spite of all the efforts of Pringle and Greig, Lord Charles Somerset succeeded in suppressing the free press in Cape Town, an attempt was made, sponsored by the same circle of independent-minded citizens, to found a South African Literary Society. Sixty-one citizens of distinction became members, and Thomas Pringle was appointed temporary secretary. It was essential to have the approval of the Governor, however, so Somerset was respectfully requested to become Patron of the Society. Ever suspicious of anything inaugurated by the'rebel'Pringle, Somerset began by refusing that honour, and proceeded to forbid the establishment of the Society, on the grounds that it'might have a tendency to produce political discussion'. The very rare contemporary documents dealing with this episode are now re-published after the lapse of 140 years. They are of great historical interest, particularly for the contrast they reveal between the alert-minded members who sought to pursue cultural activities, and the despotic and ultra-conservative Governor." Papers of the South African Literary Society, 1824 (Thomas (secretary) Pringle)

John Mackenzie South African Missionary and Statesman - W. Douglas - Negro University Press - 1969 - 564pp, Hard cover in very good, clean and tight condition. One of the most influential missionaries in South Africa. Brought up in a devout Church of Scotland family in northeastern Scotland, he volunteered for service with the LMS in 1855 and in 1858 was sent to South Africa. He served at Kuruman and at Shoshong among the Tswana peoples. Returning from furlough in 1871, he became tutor in the school for teachers and evangelists, first at Shoshong then at Kuruman. The Tswana peoples were threatened with the loss of their land to Afrikaners of the Transvaal or to speculators from the Cape. Mackenzie became a firm advocate of direct imperial rule of native territories to prevent settler takeover of the land so essential to the integrity of an African people. After a very long and complex struggle against the forces of both the Transvalers and of Cape politicians like Cecil Rhodes, he achieved success when in 1885 the British government declared the present Botswana a British Protectorate and preserved it from white settler occupation. In 1890 Mackenzie left the Tswana and spent his last years as pastor to the Cape Coloured people of Hankey, the last resting place of John Philip.

Scorched Earth: 100 Years Of Southern African Potteries Scorched Earth is the first comprehensive history of fine art pottery in southern Africa, with a focus on pioneer ceramic studios and workshops. This encyclopedic revisionist history of an often overlooked sector of the South African art and design world explores the work of 30 potteries that produced high-quality ceramic wares from 1900 to 1980. The book is the definitive history of southern African ceramics, giving voice to many artists whose work is little known in the wider art world. It contains over 300 photographs, a comprehensive list of studios, workshops and potters, makers marks, and a wide-ranging essay on the history of this art form in southern Africa.   About the author Wendy Gers is a former curator at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and now lectures at lEcole Suprieure dArt et de Design de Valenciennes, France. Gers curated the prestigious Taiwan Ceramics Biennale 2014. She is a research associate at the University of Johannesburg and an associate advisor at The Design Cradle, Cape Town. She has written museum catalogues and published articles in journals including Art South Africa, Ceramic Review, Image and Text, La revue de la cramique et du verre and African Arts.
