It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This is the first book to not only select the events that most influenced the causes and outcome of America's Civil War, but also to rank them in order of significance. In each of the book's 20 detailed essays, author/historian/speaker Alan Axelrod presents an engaging narrative about the event, and also explains how the event shaped the course of the war, and ultimately the future of the country. The author's selection and ranking criteria include: Effect as cause or trigger of the war Decisiveness: whether it was a war-winning or war-losing event (both in military terms and in terms of public opinion, morale, and support) Magnitude and scope: size and cost of a battle Enduring postwar significance in American history, politics, society, culture and/or in military history and technologyFrom Lincoln's Inauguration, Antietam, and John Brown's raid, to the New York draft riots and Stonewall Jackson dying as a result of friendly fire never before has the Civil War been explored quite this way. The Civil War was a violent argument between the North and the South. The purpose of this book is to start another argument about its history. Features Summary This is the first book to not only select the events that most influenced the causes and outcome of America's Civil War, but also to rank them in order of significance... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days During the tense months leading up to the American Civil War, the cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point continued their education even as the nation threatened to dissolve around them. Students from both the North and South struggled to understand events such as John Brown's Raid, the secession of eleven states from the Union, and the attack on Fort Sumter. By graduation day, half the class of 1862 had resigned; only twenty-eight remained, and their class motto -- "Joined in common cause" -- had been severely tested. In For Brotherhood and Duty: The Civil War History of the West Point Class of 1862, Brian R. McEnany follows the cadets from their initiation, through coursework, and on to the battlefield, focusing on twelve Union and four Confederate soldiers. Drawing heavily on primary sources, McEnany presents a fascinating chronicle of the young classmates, who became allies and enemies during the largest conflict ever undertaken on American soil. Their vivid accounts provide new perspectives not only on legendary battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and the Overland and Atlanta campaigns, but also on lesser-known battles such as Port Hudson, Olustee, High Bridge, and Pleasant Hills. There are countless studies of West Point and its more famous graduates, but McEnany's groundbreaking book brings to life the struggles and contributions of its graduates as junior officers and in small units. Generously illustrated with more than one hundred photographs and maps, this enthralling collective biography illuminates the war's impact on a unique group of soldiers and the institution that shaped them. Features Summary During the tense months leading up to the American Civil War, the cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point continued their education even as the nation threatened to dissolve around them... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days This is a powerful account of fast-changing dynamics in Angola, an important African state that is a key exporter of oil and diamonds. Based on three years of research and extensive first-hand knowledge of Angola, it documents the rise of a major economy and its insertion in the international system since it emerged in 2002 from one of Africa's longest and deadliest civil wars. The government, backed by a strategic alliance with China and working hand in glove with hundreds of thousands of expatriates, many from the former colonial power, Portugal, has pursued and ambitious agenda of state-led national reconstruction. This has resulted in double-digit growth in sub-Sahara's third largest economy and a state budget in excess of total Western aid to the entire continent. Scarred by a history of slave trading, colonial plunder and war, Angolans now aspire to the building of a decent society. How has the regime, led by President Jose Eduardo dos Santos since 1979, dealt with these challenges, and can it deliver on popular expectations? Soares de Oliveira's book charts the remarkable course the country has taken in recent years. Paperback. A4 size. In very good condition. Spine is solid. Text is clean, besides the signature of a previous owner on the first page. 192 pages. 1987. Frederikse uses press clippings, photographs, words and graphics to describe the South Africa of the time and the looming war. She postulated that South Africa was in the early stages of a civil war at the time. She sets out the narrative under 4 headings, nl: Resistance; Reform, Repression and The War. I found it very gripping and moving, even with hindsight 2 years later.
